From Class 8 to Class 9: A Maths and Science Summer Plan
The step from Class 8 to Class 9 is the biggest jump in middle school. Class 9 maths is more abstract and asks for proofs and multi-step algebra, and science splits into physics, chemistry and biology content with numericals, equations and labelled diagrams. The good news is that most of what Class 9 needs is already in Class 8. A focused plan over the break, built on five maths skills and a handful of science habits, does more than racing ahead in the Class 9 book.
One thing to know about timing in Gurugram: CBSE and ICSE schools usually start the new session in April, so for most families the "summer before Class 9" is really two windows. The first is the short gap after the Class 8 finals; the second is the summer break, which comes a few weeks into Class 9. Some international-curriculum schools run a different calendar, so check yours. The plan below works for either.
What Class 9 assumes from Class 8, board by board
CBSE. Class 9 is new from 2026-27. Maths uses NCERT's Ganita Manjari (Part I and Part II) and science uses Exploration. The 2026-27 Class 9 maths paper gives Geometry 25 marks, Algebra 20, Mensuration 14, Statistics and Probability 10, Number System 7 and Coordinate Geometry 4, out of 80. Science gives World of Living 27, Matter 25, Motion, Force, Work and Sound 23 and Earth as a System 5. CBSE also offers an optional Mathematics Advanced and Science Advanced level from Class 9, with an extra 25-mark paper of higher-order questions. Class 9 is assessed by the school, on a scheme similar to the Class 10 Board exam, and CBSE treats Classes 9 and 10 as one composite course. For the Advanced choice, see our guide to CBSE Class 9 Advanced maths and science.
ICSE. Class 9 is the first year of the two-year ICSE course. Maths is one 3-hour, 80-mark paper plus 20 marks of internal assessment in both Class 9 and Class 10. Physics, Chemistry and Biology are separate papers. Class 9 Physics starts with Measurements and Experimentation, Motion in One Dimension and Laws of Motion; Class 9 Chemistry includes The Language of Chemistry, Atomic Structure and Chemical Bonding, The Periodic Table and the Study of Gas Laws.
Cambridge IGCSE. At the Gurugram schools that state IGCSE, it runs over Grades 9 and 10. In Mathematics 0580, students are later entered for the Core tier (grades C to G) or the Extended tier (grades A* to E), so strong Class 8 algebra keeps the Extended door open.
IB MYP. The MYP runs for students aged 11 to 16. Maths and sciences are marked on four criteria, A to D, each on levels 1 to 8, so the Class 9 year is less about one exam and more about investigation and written communication.
Haryana Board. Check the Class 9 syllabus and question paper design on bseh.org.in; we only state what the Board publishes, and its Class 9 details are not covered here.
A diagnostic you can run at home in the first week of the break
Before planning anything, find out where the gaps are. Give your child the questions below on paper, with no calculator and no help, and mark them together afterwards. The point is not the score but which kind of mistake appears.
- Work out −3/4 + 5/6.
- Simplify 2⁵ × 2³ and write the answer as a power of 2 and as a number.
- Expand (3x − 2)².
- Solve 5x − 7 = 2x + 8.
- A right triangle has shorter sides 8 and 15. Find the longest side.
- 12 notebooks cost ₹300. What do 7 notebooks cost?
- Write 1.5 kg in grams and 250 mL in litres.
- Sort into element, compound or mixture: oxygen, water, salt water.
- Balance: H₂ + O₂ → H₂O.
- Draw and label a plant cell.
Answers: (1) 1/12; (2) 2⁸ = 256; (3) 9x² − 12x + 4; (4) x = 5; (5) 17; (6) ₹175; (7) 1500 g and 0.25 L; (8) oxygen is an element, water a compound and salt water a mixture; (9) 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O; (10) cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, vacuole and chloroplasts at least.
Questions 1–6 test maths readiness and 7–10 test science habits. Two or more wrong in either group tells you where the break should go.
Maths: the five skills to secure before Class 9
1. Fractions, decimals and negative numbers
Almost every Class 9 topic, from polynomials to coordinate geometry, runs on arithmetic with signs and fractions. In question 1, the common denominator is 12: −9/12 + 10/12 = 1/12. Children who write −8/10 have added tops and bottoms, which is a Class 6 gap, not a Class 9 one, and it should be fixed first.
2. Exponents
Class 8's "Power Play" chapter covers the laws: when bases match, multiply by adding powers (2⁵ × 2³ = 2⁸), and a power of a power multiplies them ((10²)³ = 10⁶). Also check that your child knows 5⁰ = 1 and can explain why.
3. Expanding brackets and identities
The single most common Class 9 algebra slip is writing (3x − 2)² as 9x² − 4. The middle term, −12x, comes from 2 × 3x × (−2). Practise with numbers too: 103² = (100 + 3)² = 10,000 + 600 + 9 = 10,609. If your child can explain each of the three terms, identities in Class 9 will feel familiar.
4. Linear equations and word problems
In question 4, take 2x from both sides and add 7 to both: 3x = 15, so x = 5. Then try a word problem: two numbers add up to 40 and differ by 6. Calling the smaller x gives x + (x + 6) = 40, so x = 17 and the numbers are 17 and 23. Class 9 builds on this with linear equations in two variables, so writing the equation from words is the key skill.
5. Geometry with reasons
For the right triangle, 8² + 15² = 64 + 225 = 289, and √289 = 17. Class 9 geometry, which carries 25 of the 80 marks in the CBSE Class 9 maths paper, asks for reasons at every step. Practise writing "angle sum of a triangle is 180°" or "vertically opposite angles are equal" next to each line, not just the number.
Proportional reasoning (question 6) also deserves a check: one notebook costs ₹25, so seven cost ₹175. More on this stage: Class 8 maths tutors and Class 9 maths tutors in Gurgaon.
Science: units, diagrams and equations to secure
- Units and conversions. Class 9 physics expects SI units in every answer. A runner covering 120 m in 24 s has a speed of 120 ÷ 24 = 5 m/s; an answer of "5" with no unit loses marks. Practise grams to kilograms, millilitres to litres and centimetres to metres until they are automatic.
- Reading graphs. A straight, sloping distance–time graph means constant speed; a flat line means the object is at rest. Class 9 motion work, in both CBSE and ICSE, builds on this.
- Elements, compounds and mixtures. Class 8's matter chapters lead straight into Class 9 chemistry. A child should be able to say why salt water is a mixture (its parts can be separated by evaporation) and water is a compound.
- Formulae and balancing. Balancing H₂ + O₂ → H₂O needs two water molecules, then two hydrogen molecules: 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O. ICSE Class 9 Chemistry opens with The Language of Chemistry, so symbols, valency and simple formulae should be secure before it starts.
- Labelled diagrams. ICSE Class 9 Biology opens with Basic Biology, starting from the cell, and labelled diagrams run through biology on every board. A neat, labelled plant and animal cell, drawn in pencil, is worth practising until it takes no thought.

A week-by-week summer plan around Gurgaon holidays and travel
Gurugram summers are hot, many families travel for part of the break, and afternoon trips across the city are tiring. The plan below keeps study short and daily, in the cooler morning, and works around a trip.
| Week | Maths | Science |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Run the diagnostic. Fix fractions and negative numbers. | Units and conversions; mark the diagnostic together. |
| 2 | Exponents; squares and square roots. | Elements, compounds and mixtures; separation methods. |
| 3 | Expanding brackets and the three main identities. | Formulae, valency and balancing simple equations. |
| 4 (travel week) | A small set of mixed revision questions a day, done on paper. | Draw one labelled diagram a day from memory. |
| 5 | Linear equations and word problems. | Motion: speed, distance–time graphs. |
| 6 | Geometry with reasons; Pythagoras. | Cells and tissues; repeat the diagnostic and compare. |
If the break falls a few weeks into Class 9, as it does for most CBSE and ICSE schools, swap in the first Class 9 chapters your child has already been taught for weeks 5 and 6. Revision of what the school has started is more useful than new content.
For families with a long school commute in term time, the break is also the time to set the routine that will carry through Class 9; our guide to a study routine around a long commute has ideas.
Should you start the Class 9 book early?
For most children, no, or only lightly. Starting the Class 9 book early tends to produce a child who has "done" a chapter once, is bored in class, and still has the same Class 8 gaps underneath. The CBSE Class 9 books are also new from 2026-27, so any material from older editions will not match them.
There are two exceptions. If your child is strong in every diagnostic question and keen, reading ahead in the first two maths chapters is fine. And if your child is considering CBSE's optional Advanced level, or a foundation course for later engineering or medical entrance exams, some early exposure to harder problem-solving helps; see IIT Foundation tutors in Gurgaon. In both cases, the Class 8 skills come first.
When a tutor helps, and when it is too much
A tutor over the break helps when the diagnostic shows real gaps, when your child loses confidence quickly in maths, or when a parent cannot sit with the work regularly. A few sessions a week, focused on the skills above, are usually enough. The same tutor can then continue into Class 9 knowing exactly where your child stands.
It is too much when the break becomes a second school term. Children who arrive in Class 9 tired do not do better. Keep at least part of each day free, protect travel weeks, and let reading, sport and rest happen. For a fuller picture of the Class 9 year itself, see our page on Class 9 home tutors in Gurgaon.

Frequently asked questions
How should my child prepare for Class 9 maths in the summer?
To prepare for Class 9 maths in the summer, start with a short home diagnostic, then secure five Class 8 skills that Class 9 builds on. They are fractions and negative numbers, exponents, expanding brackets and identities, linear equations with word problems, and geometry with reasons. Short daily study in the cooler morning works better than racing ahead in the Class 9 book.
Is Class 9 much harder than Class 8?
Class 9 is noticeably harder than Class 8, because maths becomes more abstract with proofs and multi-step algebra, and science adds numericals, equations and labelled diagrams. Most of what Class 9 needs is already in Class 8, so children with strong Class 8 basics usually adjust within the first term. Two or more wrong answers in the home diagnostic show where to focus.
Is a summer plan useful if Class 9 started in April?
Yes, a summer plan is still useful when Class 9 started in April, as it does in most CBSE and ICSE schools in Gurugram. Use the break to revise the Class 9 chapters already taught, swapping them in for weeks 5 and 6, and fix any Class 8 gaps underneath. Revising what the school has started is more useful than new content.
Is the CBSE Class 9 Advanced level compulsory?
No, the CBSE Class 9 Advanced level is optional, and a student can choose it in maths, science, both or neither. Advanced students take an extra 25-mark paper of higher-order questions, and the marks are not added to the overall total. Decide with the school based on your child's interest and comfort with harder problems, after the summer diagnostic.
Does a summer tutor need to continue into Class 9?
A summer tutor does not need to continue into Class 9, but continuing often helps because the tutor already knows your child's gaps from the break. Review after the first school test of Class 9 and decide then. A few sessions a week focused on the five maths skills and the science habits are usually enough over the summer.
Should my child start the Class 9 book early?
Most children should not start the Class 9 book early, or only lightly, because it tends to leave the same Class 8 gaps underneath and a bored child in class. The CBSE Class 9 books are new from 2026-27, so older material will not match them. A child strong on every diagnostic question and keen may read ahead in the first two maths chapters.
Which science habits should be secure before Class 9?
The science habits to secure before Class 9 are SI units in every answer, reading distance–time graphs, sorting elements, compounds and mixtures, balancing simple equations and neat labelled diagrams. An answer of 5 with no unit loses marks. ICSE Class 9 Chemistry opens with The Language of Chemistry, so symbols, valency and simple formulae should be secure before it starts.
