Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your sector: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

A Class 8 maths tutor earns their fee by doing one thing well: making sure the algebra, exponents, percentages and area work of this year are solid before the Class 9 course begins, because Class 9 treats all of it as known. On CBSE, Class 8 now runs on two NCERT books, Ganita Prakash Part-I and Part-II, and the Class 9 year that follows has a new syllabus with an optional Advanced level. ICSE moves to compound interest, logarithms and congruency proofs in Class 9. This page sets out the Class 8 chapter map, what each chapter feeds into next year, where Class 8 students usually slip, sample problems with full solutions, a plan for each school term and what to check in the free demo. It was written by Abhinandan Tiwary, who teaches Class 10 CBSE and ICSE maths and the middle-school years that lead to it.
CBSE schools follow NCERT, and NCERT's Class 8 mathematics now comes in two volumes of Ganita Prakash. Part-I is in its 2026-27 reprint; Part-II was first published in December 2025. Between them they hold fourteen chapters. The chapter names are playful, so parents often cannot tell from the title what is being taught. The table below gives each chapter, what NCERT says it covers, and the Class 9 chapter it leads into under CBSE's new 2026-27 Class 9 syllabus.
| Book | Chapter | What it covers (NCERT) | Leads into (CBSE Class 9, 2026-27) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Part-I | A Square and A Cube | Square and cube numbers through explorations | Number System: irrational numbers such as √2 and √3 |
| Part-I | Power Play | Short ways of writing very large numbers | Number System, and later logarithms in the optional Advanced level |
| Part-I | A Story of Numbers | How number systems and their notation developed | Number System: place value, decimals, rational numbers |
| Part-I | Quadrilaterals | Types of four-sided figures and problems on them | 4-gons (Quadrilaterals): proofs about parallelograms and the midpoint theorem |
| Part-I | Number Play | Properties of numbers through activities and reasoning | The habit of justifying a claim, needed for every Class 9 proof |
| Part-I | We Distribute, Yet Things Multiply | Algebra, especially the distributive law | Exploring Algebraic Identities; Introduction to Polynomials |
| Part-I | Proportional Reasoning-1 | A new way to compare two quantities | Statistics (weighted average) and Mensuration |
| Part-II | Fractions in Disguise | Percentages and their applications | Statistics and data questions; for ICSE, compound interest |
| Part-II | The Baudhayana-Pythagoras Theorem | Side lengths of a right-angled triangle | Coordinate Geometry: the distance formula |
| Part-II | Proportional Reasoning-2 | Pie charts; inverse proportion | Statistics; Linear Equations in Two Variables (word problems) |
| Part-II | Exploring Some Geometric Themes | 3D geometry and fractals | Surface Area and Volume; geometric progressions in fractals |
| Part-II | Tales by Dots and Lines | The arithmetic mean; line graphs | Statistics; graphs of linear equations |
| Part-II | Algebra Play | Using algebra to model situations | Linear Equations in Two Variables; Sequences and Progressions |
| Part-II | Area | Areas of triangles and quadrilaterals | Area and Perimeter: Heron's formula and Brahmagupta's formula |
Schools do not always teach the chapters in book order, and some split Part-I and Part-II across the two terms differently. A tutor should ask for the school's own split in the first week rather than assume. Parents comparing the new books with the ones older siblings used can read what changed in NCERT's middle-school maths and science books.
In Class 7 maths, most work still has a numerical answer you can check. Class 8 asks for more generality: why does the distributive law hold, why must a square number end in certain digits, what happens to a percentage change applied twice. The student starts writing short arguments instead of only answers.
The step after that is steep. CBSE's Class 9 syllabus for 2026-27 gives Algebra 20 of the 80 paper marks and Geometry 25, and the geometry is built on Euclid's axioms with proofs of congruence conditions, the midpoint theorem and circle theorems. CBSE also now offers an optional Mathematics Advanced level from Class 9, whose six chapters include logarithms, functions and combinatorics, tested in a separate paper. A Class 8 student who might want that option needs fluent exponents and algebra this year. Our Class 9 maths tutors in Gurgaon page explains the new structure in full.
Three things Class 9 assumes on every board: that the student can expand and simplify brackets without slips, that negative and zero powers make sense, and that a percentage or ratio problem can be set up as an equation. If any of these is shaky by February of Class 8, the first Class 9 unit tests will show it.
ICSE schools use their own choice of textbook in Class 8, so the tutor should work from the school's book and its test papers. What matters is the Class 9 ICSE syllabus that follows. CISCE's syllabus for the 2027 examination puts compound interest (including half-yearly compounding), expansions such as (a + b)³, factorisation of a³ − b³, simultaneous equations by three methods, indices and logarithms, congruency, the mid-point theorem and an area-based proof of Pythagoras into Class 9, alongside an introduction to trigonometry, and the 2028 syllabus keeps logarithms and trigonometry there; CISCE publishes a syllabus for each examination year, so check the one for your child's year. Percentages, exponents and identities from Class 8 are the tools for most of that list. Students on this board can read more on our ICSE maths tutors in Gurgaon page.
MYP is designed for 11- to 16-year-olds, and maths is judged against published criteria rather than a total mark, with optional eAssessment at the end. In a school running all five years, Grade 8 is usually MYP Year 3. A tutor here must read the task sheet and the criterion descriptors before helping, and must help the student explain and investigate, not just compute. Our IB MYP maths tutors in Gurgaon page covers this track.
Students who will move to Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580) should know that each tier has one dedicated non-calculator paper. Class 8 is the right time to keep mental and written arithmetic sharp: fractions, negative numbers, powers and percentages done by hand.
CBSE families who want the whole run from Class 6 to Class 10 in one place can turn to CBSE maths tutors in Gurgaon. See the schools families ask about below.
Writing (a + b)² = a² + b² is the single most common Class 8 algebra error, and it survives into Class 10 if no one corrects it. The cure is to draw the square of side a + b once and see the two rectangles ab that were missing.
Students treat 2⁻³ as a negative number, or 5⁰ as zero. Both come from learning rules without the pattern behind them: each step down in the power divides by the base once more.
A 20% rise followed by a 20% fall does not return to the start, because the second 20% is of a new base. Students who never write down the base get these questions wrong in Class 8 and again in ICSE compound interest.
When Proportional Reasoning-2 introduces inverse proportion, many students apply the direct rule to everything. Asking "if one quantity doubles, does the other double or halve?" before calculating fixes most of it.
Two quieter problems matter as much. In geometry, students state facts about quadrilaterals without saying why, which costs them later when CBSE and ICSE Class 9 geometry asks for a reason on every line. And in the data chapters, line graphs are drawn without a stated scale or labelled axes, a habit that loses easy marks on every board.
Each problem below was written for this page; none is lifted from a textbook or a school paper.
Find 103² without a calculator.
Write 103 as 100 + 3. Then (100 + 3)² = 100² + 2 × 100 × 3 + 3² = 10,000 + 600 + 9 = 10,609.
The point is not the trick. It is seeing that the middle term, 600, is exactly what students lose when they write
(a + b)² = a² + b².
Simplify (3⁴ × 3⁻²) ÷ 3⁻¹.
Same base, so add the powers when multiplying and subtract when dividing: 4 + (−2) − (−1) = 3. The answer is
3³ = 27.
A student who writes 4 − 2 − 1 = 1 has lost the sign of the divisor, which is the slip to watch for.
Six painters finish a society's boundary wall in 10 days. Working at the same rate, how long would 15
painters take?
The work is 6 × 10 = 60 painter-days. With 15 painters, 60 ÷ 15 = 4 days.
More painters, fewer days: the quantities move in opposite directions, so the product stays fixed.
A good tutor follows each example with a small variation: (98)² written as (100 − 2)², or a question where the painters work at different rates. The variation shows whether the idea has been understood or only the steps copied.
| When | In school | The tutor's focus |
|---|---|---|
| April to June | First chapters of Part-I; summer break | Diagnose Class 7 gaps (integers, fractions, simple equations); squares, cubes and powers made fluent |
| July to September | Rest of Part-I; first-term or half-yearly exams | Distributive law and identities practised until automatic; quadrilaterals with a reason for each fact; past school papers before the exam |
| October to December | Part-II begins: percentages, Baudhayana-Pythagoras, proportion | Percentage change with the base written down; direct versus inverse proportion; neat right-triangle diagrams |
| January to March | Data, algebra modelling and area; annual exam | Line graphs with scale and labels; full revision tests; a short list of topics to secure before Class 9 |
For most Class 8 students, a weekly session or two is enough. The summer before Class 9 is worth a few extra sessions to bridge into the new course, especially for a student weighing the CBSE Advanced option or moving to ICSE. For the same year in science, see our Class 8 science tutors in Gurgaon.
For a student who already finds school maths easy, Class 8 is a sensible time to add depth: harder problems on the same chapters, puzzles that need a written argument, and number-play questions that reward patience. That is different from racing ahead into Class 11 topics, which rarely helps at this age. The test is simple. If the student's school maths is secure and they enjoy the extra problems, add depth. If school marks are slipping, fix those first. How Class 8 to 10 foundation work can sit alongside school is set out under IIT foundation tutors in Gurgaon.
Your first class with any shortlisted tutor is a free demo. In Class 8, these are the checks worth making:

Class 8 students in Gurugram often have long school bus rides and activities on two or three evenings. Maths tuition fits most easily on the evenings without them, early enough that the student is not tired. Evening traffic on Sohna Road, Golf Course Extension Road and the stretch around NH-48 can stretch a short trip, so a tutor who starts from your side of the main road is worth more than one who lives nearer on the map.
In Old Gurugram, many maths tutors live within reach, so two home sessions a week are easy to arrange. Around Sector 56 and the Golf Course Extension Road zone, families often keep one fixed weekday slot and use the weekend for tests. In New Gurugram sectors such as Sector 82, where fewer tutors live close by, one home session plus one online session with the same tutor is a common pattern. Online maths works at this age if the student's notebook is on camera throughout.
School terms set the rhythm. Increase sessions in the weeks before the half-yearly and annual exams, and use the gap after the annual exam, before Class 9 starts, for the bridge work described above.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.
Each tutor names their own rate, and it is shown on your shortlist before a demo is booked. For a Class 8 budget, the Gurgaon tuition fees guide lists what pushes a rate up or down.
Send us the board, the Class 8 book the school uses, the chapters that worry you, where you live in Gurugram and which evenings are free. Parents often tell us their child's school so the tutor can follow the same board and books. These Gurugram schools follow CBSE, ICSE and ISC, IB or Cambridge IGCSE, as shown on each school's own site or its board's directory, with the sector each is in. NXTutors has no tie-up with any school; tutors are matched by board and syllabus, and the list is alphabetical, not a ranking.

CBSE Class 8 maths in Gurgaon schools uses NCERT's Ganita Prakash in two volumes. Part-I has seven chapters, from A Square and A Cube to Proportional Reasoning-1, and Part-II has seven more, from Fractions in Disguise to Area. A tutor should work from both books in the order your school teaches them.
The new Class 8 maths chapter names sound playful, but they teach Gurgaon students familiar content. Power Play covers very large numbers and exponents, We Distribute, Yet Things Multiply is algebra built on the distributive law, and Fractions in Disguise is percentages. The Baudhayana-Pythagoras Theorem covers right-angled triangles, Tales by Dots and Lines the mean and line graphs, and Area triangles and quadrilaterals.
Algebraic identities, exponents including negative and zero powers, percentages and the right-triangle theorem are the Class 8 maths topics that matter most for Gurgaon students entering Class 9. CBSE Class 9 builds identities, polynomials and coordinate geometry on them. ICSE Class 9 adds compound interest, logarithms and harder factorisation, so weak spots show quickly.
A Gurgaon Class 8 student should prepare for CBSE Mathematics Advanced only if school maths is already comfortable. From 2026-27 CBSE offers an optional Advanced level in Class 9, with chapters such as sets, logarithms and combinatorics and an extra paper. The most useful preparation is fluent exponents and algebra, not studying the Advanced chapters early.
One or two maths sessions a week are right for most Gurgaon Class 8 students, with a few extra before exams. Add those sessions before the half-yearly and annual exams. Use the break between Class 8 and Class 9 for bridge work if the student is moving to a new board or considering the Advanced option.
Yes, NXTutors matches Class 8 maths tutors for ICSE and IB MYP in Gurgaon once you share the board and the book or unit. For ICSE we look for tutors who know the Class 9 syllabus that follows. For the MYP we want someone who reads the unit's criteria before helping and lets the student do the investigating.
Yes, a Class 8 maths tutor in Gurugram can teach online, as long as the student's written working stays visible throughout on a tablet or under a camera. In newer sectors, where fewer tutors live nearby, families often split the week between a home visit and an online class with the same tutor.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each Class 8 maths tutor in Gurgaon sets a rate, and it appears on your shortlist before you book the free demo.
