Switching from CBSE to IB or IGCSE (and Back) in Gurgaon

Switching from CBSE to IB or IGCSE (and Back) in Gurgaon

By Ajay Vatsyayan 10 min read

Switching from CBSE to the IB or IGCSE works well for most students when it happens at a natural entry point, usually the start of Grade 9 for IGCSE or the start of the IB Diploma in Grade 11, and when the student spends six to eight weeks beforehand learning the new style of questions, the calculator and the command terms. The maths content is rarely the problem; the way questions are asked and marked is. Switching back to CBSE or ISC for Class 11 is also common, and it needs a different kind of preparation: speed without a calculator and full, textbook-style working.

This guide is for families in Gurgaon (Gurugram) considering a move in either direction. It explains what actually changes, the best points to switch, the specific maths gaps each way, what to check when moving back to CBSE or ISC for Class 11, and a practical 6–8 week bridging plan you can follow with or without a tutor.

What changes when you move from CBSE to IB or IGCSE?

Assessment style

CBSE papers reward knowing the NCERT method and writing it out completely. IB and IGCSE papers are more likely to put a familiar idea in an unfamiliar setting and ask the student to decide the method. Marks are split between method, accuracy and reasoning, so a correct method with a slip still earns most of the credit, while a bare answer may earn very little.

Command terms

Both the IB and Cambridge publish lists of instruction words and what each one means. The ones that cost CBSE students most marks early on:

  • "Show that": the answer is given, so every step must be visible.
  • "Hence": use the previous result. Using a different method, even a correct one, can lose the marks.
  • "Write down": little or no working is needed.
  • "Justify" or "explain": a reason in words is expected, not just a number.
  • "Estimate" and "sketch": these have precise meanings. A sketch needs the right shape, intercepts and key points, not a plotted graph.

Coursework and internal assessment

In the IB Diploma, every subject has an internally assessed component. In maths it is a written exploration worth 20% of the grade at both SL and HL. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580) and Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A (4MA1) are fully examined, with no coursework, so an IGCSE student's maths grade comes entirely from the exam papers. Other IGCSE subjects vary.

Calculators

This is the biggest practical change. CBSE students are used to doing maths without a calculator. In Cambridge 0580, Paper 2 (Extended) is non-calculator and Paper 4 needs a scientific calculator; graphical calculators are not permitted. In Edexcel 4MA1, a calculator may be used in both papers. In IB Maths Analysis and Approaches (AA), Paper 1 is taken with no technology and Papers 2 and 3 require a graphic display calculator (GDC); in Applications and Interpretation (AI), a GDC is required on every paper.

A GDC is a skill of its own: graphing, intersections, numerical solving and statistics. Buy the exact model the school approves and start using it before the course begins.

Pace and independence

The IB recommends 240 teaching hours for an HL subject and 150 for SL, and a Diploma student takes six subjects plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS. Deadlines are spread through the year, so students used to one big push before board exams must learn to work steadily from week one.

When is the best time to switch?

Switch pointHow it usually goesWhat to prepare
Start of Grade 9 into IGCSEThe most natural entry. IGCSE courses run over Grades 9 and 10, and Cambridge designs each syllabus for about 130 guided learning hours.Command terms, calculator use, and the IGCSE topics CBSE has not covered yet
Start of DP Year 1 (Grade 11)The standard IB entry for students from CBSE or ICSE. The Diploma is a two-year course.Choosing AA or AI and SL or HL, GDC skills, and algebra fluency
Middle of DP Year 1 or laterHard. Internal assessment deadlines and HL content move quickly.Talk to the Diploma coordinator before deciding
Into the IB MYP (Grades 6 to 10)The IB describes the MYP as a five-year programme for ages 11 to 16, but schools can run shorter versions, so entry points vary.Criteria-based tasks and written explanation of reasoning

If you have a choice, avoid switching in the middle of a two-year exam course.

Maths gaps: CBSE to IGCSE

A CBSE student arriving in IGCSE Extended maths will find much of the arithmetic and algebra familiar. The gaps are in topics CBSE covers later or differently. From the Cambridge 0580 Extended syllabus, the ones to check are:

  • Functions: function notation, composite functions and inverse functions.
  • Limits of accuracy: upper and lower bounds, including bounds of a calculated result such as a speed.
  • Transformations and vectors: reflections, rotations, enlargements and translations, and vector geometry in two dimensions.
  • Differentiation: 0580 Extended includes simple differentiation, which a CBSE student would not usually meet until Class 11 or 12.
  • Statistics: cumulative frequency diagrams, histograms with unequal class widths and scatter diagrams.
  • Sets and conditional probability, presented through Venn diagrams and tree diagrams.
  • Sine and cosine rules for non-right-angled triangles.

The deciding factor for Cambridge is the tier. Core candidates can achieve grades C to G and Extended candidates A* to E, so a student aiming for a strong grade must be on Extended. Our IGCSE Core vs Extended maths guide explains the choice, and if the school follows Edexcel rather than Cambridge, our Cambridge vs Edexcel IGCSE comparison sets out the differences.

Maths gaps: CBSE to the IB Diploma

A student coming from CBSE Class 10 into DP Year 1 usually has good algebra and good arithmetic. What they often lack:

  • Technology fluency. For AI, and for AA Papers 2 and 3, the GDC is part of the skill being tested, and the working shown for a GDC result matters.
  • Accuracy conventions. IB papers expect answers exact or to three significant figures unless told otherwise. Rounding too early is a common way to lose marks.
  • Interpretation. Especially in AI, a correct number with no conclusion in context loses marks.
  • Extended problem-solving. HL Paper 3 leads the student through an unfamiliar idea in stages, which feels nothing like a CBSE paper.

The first decision is the course. Analysis and Approaches is built around algebra, functions, calculus and proof; Applications and Interpretation around modelling, statistics and technology. Both are offered at SL and HL. Our guide to IB Maths AA vs AI, SL vs HL covers the choice, including the revised courses first examined in 2029, which students starting the Diploma from 2027 will follow.

Switching back to CBSE or ISC for Class 11

Families move back to an Indian board for Indian university plans, entrance exams or a change of city, usually after IGCSE, at the start of Class 11.

Admission rules

Each board sets its own rules for students from other boards, and the school will guide you. For ISC, CISCE's regulations say that a student from another examining board needs a pass certificate from an equivalent examination, with passes in English and four other written subjects. The school may admit the student provisionally in Class 11 and then submits the mark statement to CISCE, which confirms the student's eligibility. For CBSE schools, ask the admissions office which documents they need, such as the transfer certificate and mark statements, and whether any equivalence paperwork is required.

Subject rules

  • CBSE: a student takes either Mathematics (041) or Applied Mathematics (241), not both. Mathematics (041) is the course meant for students heading towards engineering, the physical sciences or a maths degree.
  • ISC: Mathematics cannot be taken together with Applied Mathematics.
  • Engineering entrance: for programmes based on JEE (Main) Paper 1 ranks in NITs and similar institutes, the 2026 information bulletin required the Class 12 qualifying exam to include Physics, Mathematics, a language, one of Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology or a technical vocational subject, and one more subject. Check the current bulletin for your child's year.

Maths gaps: IGCSE or MYP to CBSE or ISC Class 11

  • Speed without a calculator. Indian board maths and entrance exams expect fast, accurate hand calculation with fractions, surds and trigonometric values.
  • Trigonometry. Class 11 moves to radian measure, trigonometric functions of any angle, identities and equations. IGCSE students have often done only triangle trigonometry.
  • Proof and full derivations. Board papers reward complete, textbook-style working, including stating results and reasons.
  • Topics not in IGCSE: complex numbers, permutations and combinations, the binomial theorem, conic sections and limits.
  • The CBSE Class 10 base. Class 11 assumes Class 10 CBSE topics such as quadratic equations, arithmetic progressions, coordinate geometry and trigonometric identities are secure. Check these first.

If your child is moving to ISC, our ICSE and ISC maths guide covers the current ISC papers and a two-year plan.

A 6–8 week bridging plan

Start this in the summer before the switch, or in the first weeks of the new course. Three sessions a week of 60 to 90 minutes, plus short daily practice, is a realistic load.

WeekInto IB or IGCSEBack to CBSE or ISC
1Diagnostic test on the new syllabus. Build a gap list. Get the school's calculator or GDC.Diagnostic test on Class 10 CBSE maths. Build a gap list.
2Command terms: practise ten short questions a day, each labelled with its command term.Non-calculator arithmetic: fractions, surds, exact trigonometric values, daily timed drills.
3Calculator or GDC skills: graphs, intersections, solving equations, statistics.Class 10 gaps: quadratics, progressions, coordinate geometry, identities.
4The biggest content gaps from the diagnostic, such as functions, vectors or bounds.Sets, relations and functions, where Class 11 maths usually begins.
5Past-paper questions by topic, marked with the official mark scheme.Radian measure and trigonometric functions.
6A full timed paper; log every lost mark by cause.Full board-style written solutions, checked for steps and presentation.
7–8 (if time allows)For IB, an early look at what the exploration asks for; for IGCSE, the harder Extended or Higher topics.Complex numbers or permutations and combinations, depending on the school's order.

If the week 6 error log shows most lost marks come from command terms or accuracy, the fix is practice with mark schemes, not re-teaching content.

On fees: across NXTutors most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.

Frequently asked questions

Is it hard to switch from CBSE to IGCSE in Grade 9?

Usually not, if it happens at the start of Grade 9. Most CBSE students find the content manageable; the new parts are command terms, calculator papers and a few topics such as functions, bounds, vectors and transformations. A six-week bridging plan before term starts covers most of this.

Can a CBSE Class 10 student join the IB Diploma?

Yes. The start of DP Year 1 is the standard entry point for students from Indian boards. The key early decisions are AA or AI and SL or HL for maths, and the student should learn the school's graphic display calculator before the course begins.

Can my child go back to CBSE or ISC after IGCSE?

Yes, usually at the start of Class 11. The school will ask for mark statements and other documents, and for ISC, CISCE confirms eligibility for students from other boards. The maths gaps to close are non-calculator speed, trigonometry, and topics like complex numbers and binomial theorem.

Which is harder, IB maths or CBSE maths?

They are hard in different ways. CBSE and JEE maths reward speed and technique without a calculator. IB maths rewards reading unfamiliar questions, using technology well, interpreting results and writing up an exploration. A student strong in one system still needs preparation for the other.

How long does a bridging programme take?

Six to eight weeks is realistic, with about three sessions a week and short daily practice. Start with a diagnostic test so the time goes on real gaps. The error log from a full timed paper in week six tells you what to work on next.
