IB Maths HL is not SL with a few extra chapters. The IB recommends 240 teaching hours for HL against 150 for SL, HL students sit a third paper of extended problem-solving, and the extra 90 hours land in different topics depending on whether the course is analysis and approaches (AA) or applications and interpretation (AI). An HL tutor should know which course and which topics carry the extra weight, and should build Paper 3 practice into the plan from DP1. This page covers only what is specific to HL; the broader IB maths tutor guide covers both courses at both levels.
The IB's subject briefs give recommended teaching hours for each of the five topics. Comparing SL with HL shows where an HL student's extra time goes, and it is not the same for the two courses.
| Topic | AA SL | AA HL | AI SL | AI HL |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Number and algebra | 19 | 39 (+20) | 16 | 29 (+13) |
| Functions | 21 | 32 (+11) | 31 | 42 (+11) |
| Geometry and trigonometry | 25 | 51 (+26) | 18 | 46 (+28) |
| Statistics and probability | 27 | 33 (+6) | 36 | 52 (+16) |
| Calculus | 28 | 55 (+27) | 19 | 41 (+22) |
| Investigation, problem-solving, modelling and the exploration | 30 | 30 | 30 | 30 |
| Total | 150 | 240 | 150 | 240 |
Two things follow for tutoring. In AA HL, calculus (+27 hours) and geometry and trigonometry (+26) take the largest share of the extra time, so an AA HL student who is shaky in either needs attention there early. In AI HL, geometry and trigonometry (+28) and calculus (+22) also grow, but statistics and probability is already the biggest single topic at 52 hours, which suits students who are comfortable with data and modelling. Both courses keep the same 30 hours for investigation and the exploration, so HL does not mean a bigger internal assessment; it means more mathematics around it.
| Component | Time | Weight | AA HL | AI HL |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | 2 hours | 30% | No technology; short-response and extended-response sections | Technology allowed; short-response questions |
| Paper 2 | 2 hours | 30% | Technology allowed; short-response and extended-response sections | Technology allowed; extended-response questions |
| Paper 3 | 1 hour | 20% | Technology allowed; two compulsory extended-response problem-solving questions | |
| Exploration | Internal | 20% | Written mathematical exploration, marked by the teacher and moderated by the IB | |
For an AA HL student, the no-technology Paper 1 is two hours long and worth almost a third of the grade, so algebraic fluency without a calculator is worth real practice time. For AI HL, every paper allows technology, so fluent, accurate use of the graphic display calculator is part of the mathematics, not an extra.
These are the current courses. The IB has announced revised maths courses for first teaching in August 2027 and first assessment in May 2029. A student who starts DP1 in August 2026 sits the current papers; a student who starts in August 2027 or later is on the revised courses. Tell us the exam year when you ask for a tutor.
Paper 3 is the paper most HL students fear and the one most often left until the last month. It has two long, compulsory problems. Each usually starts with something the student can do and then builds, part by part, towards a result the student has not seen before. It rewards three habits more than extra content:
The fix is frequency. One Paper 3-style problem every two or three weeks from the middle of DP1, worked with the tutor and then alone, makes the format familiar long before the mocks.
The level is the school's and the student's decision, and the school sets its own deadline for changing it. Before deciding, check what the student's intended university courses ask for in maths, on the universities' own admissions pages. Signs that HL may be a stretch worth discussing with the school:
A tutor can help a student make that call with evidence, for example by setting a few HL-style extended questions and seeing how the student copes. A tutor should not make the decision for the family or the school.
| Period | Focus with the tutor |
|---|---|
| DP1, first term | Close gaps from MYP, IGCSE, CBSE or ICSE; algebra fluency without a calculator (AA) or calculator fluency (AI) |
| DP1, second term | The HL-heavy topics for the course (see the hours table); first Paper 3-style problems |
| End of DP1 | Exploration: understanding the criteria and the mathematics the student's own idea needs, without shaping the work |
| DP2, first term | Finish the syllabus; mixed-topic extended questions; Paper 3 practice every two to three weeks |
| DP2, before mocks and finals | Timed past papers for all three papers, marked against the markscheme, and repair of lost marks |
Tutors teach IB Maths HL at home in Gurugram (IB maths tutors in Gurgaon) and online across India (online tuition). You see two or three matched tutors and their fees before a free demo class. Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. The rest of the section is on the IB and IGCSE tutors page.
The IB recommends 240 teaching hours for HL against 150 for SL, so HL covers each topic in more depth and breadth. HL students also sit Paper 3, a one-hour paper of two compulsory extended problem-solving questions worth 20% of the grade. The exploration is worth 20% at both levels.
In the IB subject briefs, AA HL adds the most time to calculus (55 hours against 28 at SL) and geometry and trigonometry (51 against 25). AI HL adds the most to geometry and trigonometry (46 against 18) and calculus (41 against 19), and statistics and probability is its largest topic at 52 hours.
Little and often from DP1. Paper 3 has two long, compulsory problems that build part by part towards an unfamiliar result, and technology is allowed. Working one Paper 3-style problem every two or three weeks, first with the tutor and then alone, makes the format familiar long before the mocks.
It depends on the course. In analysis and approaches, Paper 1 is taken without technology and Papers 2 and 3 allow it. In applications and interpretation, all three papers allow technology. These are the rules for the courses first assessed in 2021; check with the school for the revised courses first assessed in May 2029.
That is a decision for the student, the family and the school, which sets its own deadline for changing level. Check what the intended university courses require in maths on the universities' own admissions pages. A tutor can provide evidence by setting HL-style extended questions, but should not make the decision.
