Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Lucknow has a smaller IB community than its CBSE, ISC and UP Board ones, which shapes everything about finding an IB maths tutor here. The specialist your child needs may live on the other bank of the Gomti, and a weekly visit has to be planned around that. Before geography, though, comes the course: Diploma maths is really four different subjects, and a tutor strong in one can be ordinary in another. This page is written by Ajay Vatsyayan, who teaches IB, IGCSE and ISC maths on NXTutors. It sits under our maths home tutors in Lucknow page and the IB tutors in Lucknow hub.
When the pool of specialists is small, a precise request saves weeks. Please tell us these four things:
If the choice of course or level is still open, our guide to AA, AI, SL and HL walks through it, and the national IB maths tutor page covers the content in more depth.
On both courses and at both levels, external exams provide 80 percent of the grade and the exploration, marked by the school and moderated by the IB, provides 20. The way the exam share is split is what differs.
| Component | Standard Level | Higher Level |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | 90 minutes, 40% of the grade; AA students write it without a calculator, AI students with one | Two hours, 30%; the same calculator rule by course |
| Paper 2 | 90 minutes, 40%; calculator allowed on both courses | Two hours, 30%; calculator allowed |
| Paper 3 | Not taken at SL | 20%; two long problem-solving questions, calculator allowed |
| Exploration | 20%, internally assessed | 20%, internally assessed |
For an AA student the practical message is simple: a large share of the grade is earned with pen and paper alone, so algebra and calculus must be fluent without any machine. For an AI student it is the reverse: the calculator is a thinking tool, and slow keystrokes cost time on every paper.
Paper 3 gives an HL student two long questions. Each opens with steps that look routine and then leads, part by part, to a result the student has not met before. Marks are lost less through missing knowledge than through panic: abandoning a question when part (c) is hard, or failing to use an earlier result that the question has handed over. That composure is trained, not taught in a week. A tutor should bring Paper 3 style problems into DP1, one at a time and untimed at first, so that by the mocks the format feels ordinary.
The IB has published revised versions of both courses, taught from August 2027 with first exams in May 2029. The architecture stays: two courses, two levels, the exploration, and the 80/20 balance. Within AA, Papers 1 and 2 come down to 100 marks from 110, Paper 3 comes down to 50 marks from 55 and is given one hour, and the exploration is marked against one set of criteria for both levels. A Lucknow student starting DP1 in or after August 2027 should practise from material adjusted for those totals; an earlier starter stays on the current papers. Tell the tutor which applies at the first meeting.
The exploration is the student's own written investigation of a mathematical question, usually somewhere between 12 and 20 pages in the IB's guidance. Teachers mark it against published criteria for presentation, communication, personal engagement, reflection and the use of mathematics. A fifth of the grade rides on it, which tempts families to over-help. The IB's academic-integrity rules forbid that.
Teaching mathematics the idea needs, even beyond the syllabus. Asking questions that narrow a vague interest into something answerable. Explaining the criteria with the IB's published examples. Saying, in general terms, that a section is hard to follow.
Choosing the topic. Writing, rewording or editing the student's sentences. Doing calculations, graphs or models for them. Line-by-line correction of drafts. The student should also tell the school's teacher about outside tutoring.
Lucknow gives a curious student material to own: data they collect themselves at a busy crossing, the geometry of the historic buildings around Chowk, a model of rainfall or river levels on the Gomti from public records, or the timetable of a metro line. The value lies in carrying a modest question all the way through with real mathematics.
Because CISCE runs deep in Lucknow, many local Diploma students arrive from ICSE Class 10. They bring real strengths: written working laid out step by step, matrices, arithmetic and geometric progressions, and coordinate geometry from the ICSE syllabus. The gaps are usually the function language the IB uses from the first week, a graphic calculator they have never touched, and questions that give far less scaffolding. CBSE students tend to be quick with standard methods and less used to explaining their reasoning in sentences. Students from the UP Board may also need to rebuild mathematical vocabulary in English. Those coming from the MYP, assessed on four criteria in maths, are comfortable with open tasks but less so with long timed papers; IGCSE Extended students mostly meet a faster pace.
A short bridging block before or at the start of DP1 helps all of them: functions and their graphs, exponents and logarithms, trigonometry, and for AI students the calculator from day one. The guide to switching from CBSE to IB or IGCSE sets out such a plan. Families still choosing between boards can compare our ICSE maths tutors in Lucknow page.
With fewer specialists, the journey decides more matches here than in most subjects. From our zone notes:
The zone guides for Gomti Nagar and Trans-Gomti and central and south Lucknow say more, and every locality is on the Lucknow home tutors page.
Our zone notes keep recommending online lessons for senior specialist subjects across the city, and IB maths is the clearest case. It works when the set-up respects how the subject is examined:
The online versus offline tutoring guide discusses the trade-offs in general.
| Session | In DP1 | In DP2 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Keep pace with the current class topic; short non-calculator drill for AA | Timed section of a past paper by component |
| 2 | Exam-style questions on the same topic, marked with method and accuracy marks | Error review from that paper; weak topic re-taught |
| 3 | New topic preview or a gap from an older unit; GDC technique for AI | A second timed section; for HL, one Paper 3 question |
| 4 | One Paper 3 style problem for HL, or a mixed review set for SL; exploration mathematics when relevant | Full-paper practice before mocks; an error log updated by topic |
International schools keep their own calendars, so the tutor should take term dates, test weeks and the exploration deadline from the school rather than from the board-exam season that much of Lucknow follows.

For IB maths in Lucknow, the level, the tutor's travel and the number of weekly sessions move the figure. Each tutor sets their own fee and you see it before the demo; read the pricing guide and our post on home tuition fees in Lucknow.

Send us the course (AA or AI), the level, the exam session, the DP year and what is going wrong, with your locality and free slots. We reply with two or three matched tutors and their fees. The first class is a free demo, and where no specialist lives near you we suggest online or a mix.
Analysis and Approaches is algebraic and exact, with proof and calculus by hand and one paper sat without a calculator. Applications and Interpretation centres on modelling and statistics, with the graphic display calculator used on every paper. Each is offered at SL and HL, so a tutor must suit both the course and the level.
Exams make up 80 percent of the grade and the exploration 20 percent, on both courses and levels. SL students sit Papers 1 and 2, each 90 minutes and 40 percent. HL students sit two-hour Papers 1 and 2 at 30 percent each and Paper 3, two long problem-solving questions worth 20 percent.
Yes. Revised AA and AI courses are taught from August 2027 and first examined in May 2029. The structure stays, with SL and HL, the exploration and the 80/20 split, but for AA the paper totals fall and Paper 3 gets one hour. Tell the tutor which version your child is on.
Within limits. A tutor may teach mathematics the idea needs, ask questions that sharpen a topic and explain the criteria with the IB's own examples. A tutor may not choose the topic, write or edit sentences, or do calculations or graphs. The student should tell their school teacher about outside tutoring.
The start can feel unfamiliar. ICSE students usually set out working neatly and know matrices and progressions, but meet the IB's function language, a graphic calculator and less-guided questions for the first time. A short bridging block on functions, logarithms and trigonometry before or early in DP1 usually closes the gap.
