Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Middle school is where Lucknow students meet algebra, separate science topics, a third language and longer written answers, all in the same two or three years. Nobody sits a board exam yet, so gaps stay hidden until Class 9 exposes them. This page is written by Aaditya Kashyap, our CBSE and ICSE science author, with the NXTutors Academic Team. It covers how each board treats Classes 6 to 8, the topics where marks usually start to slide, what the UP Board's Class 9 papers will ask for, the habits to settle now, and how to arrange a tutor in your part of the city.
Three shifts happen at once. Maths moves from numbers to symbols, so a child who was quick at sums can suddenly feel lost with letters standing for numbers. Science stops being a single reading subject and starts to need diagrams, definitions and simple reasoning about cause and effect. And answers grow longer: a question now wants three or four linked sentences, not a phrase. Add a third language and more homework, and a capable child can fall behind without anyone noticing until the half-yearly result.
| Board | Books and approach | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| CBSE | NCERT's newer middle-school books, Ganita Prakash for maths and Curiosity for science, built around activities and reasoning | A third language (R3) is compulsory from Class 6 from 2026-27, and Computational Thinking and AI run through Classes 3 to 8 |
| CISCE (ICSE schools) | Books chosen by the school, often denser than NCERT, with heavy English grammar and composition | A third language is studied from at least Class 5 to Class 8 and examined by the school |
| UP Board schools | The school's own books, in Hindi or English medium | The board's syllabi start at Class 9, so the middle years should prepare for its Class 9 maths and science courses |
| IB MYP | A five-year programme for ages 11 to 16 across eight subject groups, marked against criteria | Projects and written reflection carry real weight |
| Cambridge Lower Secondary | For roughly ages 11 to 14, with optional Checkpoint tests | Problem-solving and written explanation in maths and science |
Lucknow has a long-standing CISCE presence alongside CBSE and many UP Board schools, so ask a tutor which book series they have taught from, not just which board. Our CBSE and ICSE pages for Lucknow say more about each.
The Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad, Uttar Pradesh, publishes subject syllabi from Class 9 onwards, and those documents show where the middle years should lead. For 2026-27, Class 9 maths has a 70-mark written exam and 30 marks of project work, and science has a 70-mark written exam with 30 marks for practical and project work done at school. The weightings are revealing:
| Subject | Units and marks out of 70 | What Class 7 and 8 should secure |
|---|---|---|
| Maths | Number systems 12, algebra 22, coordinate geometry 4, geometry 16, mensuration 12, statistics 4 | Integers, fractions and decimals without slips; simple equations; area and perimeter; basic angle facts |
| Science | Matter 20, organisation in the living world 20, motion, force and work 25, food production 5 | States of matter, cells and tissues as ideas, speed and units, and reading a diagram carefully |
Algebra is almost a third of the Class 9 maths paper, and motion, force and work is the biggest science unit. A middle-school tutor who builds equation skills and comfort with units is already preparing a UP Board child for the board years. Our UP Board tutors in Lucknow page covers the board in full.
A tutor should test these early, not assume them. Ten questions in the first session reveal more than a report card. See also Class 7 maths and Class 8 science.
These cost nothing and pay back for four years. A good tutor builds them into every session.
Middle-school projects, models and activity files are meant to be the child's own. A tutor may help choose a topic, explain the science behind it and check that the write-up makes sense, but should not build the model or write the report. In IB MYP schools, where projects are marked against criteria, help that goes too far can do real harm. Ask the tutor how they handle projects before you agree.
| Zone | Typical way in | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Gomti Nagar, Indira Nagar and Chinhat | Red Line to Indira Nagar or Munshi Pulia; by road deeper into the khands | Gomti Nagar railway station in Vivek Khand helps a few tutors on the suburban line |
| Mahanagar, Aliganj and Jankipuram | Badshahnagar or IT College for the southern colonies; road travel further north | Vikas Nagar runs in numbered sectors; give the sector with the house number |
| Hazratganj, Lalbagh and Aminabad | Underground stations at Hazratganj, Sachivalaya and Hussainganj; Charbagh to the south | Car parking is scarce; a tutor on foot from the metro is easiest |
| Alambagh, Ashiyana and Rajajipuram | The oldest stretch of the Red Line, with Krishna Nagar and Alambagh stations | Kanpur Road peaks morning and evening |
| Sushant Golf City, Vrindavan Yojana and Telibagh | By road along Shaheed Path or Raebareli Road; no metro | Tower gates often issue passes for regular tutors |
By Class 7 many children manage online lessons well, especially for maths practice or a language, provided the tutor can see the notebook through a phone held above it or a shared screen. Home visits remain better for children who drift, for science with diagrams, and for the first months while habits are formed. A common pattern is one home visit and one online session a week, with the same tutor. Our home versus online tutor article compares the two.
Give it six to eight weeks, then look for changes you can see without a test result. Is your child starting homework without being chased? Are maths answers now laid out line by line? Can they explain, in their own words, yesterday's science topic at the dinner table? Has the mistakes notebook stopped repeating the same error? Ask the tutor for a short note each month naming one thing that has improved and one still on the list. If nothing has shifted after two months, talk to the tutor first; if that does not help, ask us for another match, which costs nothing.
The demo is free, and if it does not suit, another shortlisted tutor can give one. Switching later costs nothing. Tutors who join go through an ID check. For Olympiad-minded children, read our article on Olympiad preparation.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Middle-school rates usually sit below senior-class rates. A single tutor for maths and science costs less than two specialists, while IB MYP or Cambridge experience, the journey to your home and the number of weekly sessions push a quote up. You see every fee before the demo. More in our pricing guide and home tuition fees in Lucknow.
Gomti Nagar is organised in khands, every one starting with V, and mixes plotted houses with apartment blocks; give the khand and plot number and the tutor will find you. In Vikas Nagar, between Aliganj and Kalyanpur, most families live in independent houses, and a tutor from Aliganj or Jankipuram keeps evening lessons more reliably than one crossing the Ring Road. Chowk, the crowded heart of the old city, has no metro yet, so a tutor on a two-wheeler and a landmark near the door make the first visit simple.
Rajendra Nagar, close to Charbagh, is mostly mid-rise flats; a tutor can ride the Red Line to Charbagh and finish by auto, avoiding the station traffic at peak hours. In LDA Colony, laid out in lettered sectors off Kanpur Road, houses mean easy parking and Krishna Nagar station is near. Sarojini Nagar, out towards the airport, has housing board flats and houses with Amausi and Transport Nagar stations within reach.

Because maths turns to symbols, science splits into topics with diagrams and definitions, and answers have to be longer, all at once. Weak fractions or negative numbers then break algebra. A tutor who tests these basics in the first session and fixes them early prevents a much harder Class 9.
For 2026-27, the board's Class 9 maths syllabus has a 70-mark written exam plus 30 marks of project work. Algebra carries 22 of the 70 marks, the largest unit, followed by geometry at 16. Building equation skills and comfort with negative numbers in Class 7 and 8 is the most useful preparation a tutor can give.
Usually, yes. At this level a tutor comfortable in both can cover them well, which also costs less than two specialists. Choose a separate maths tutor only if your child is far behind in algebra, or is preparing for Olympiads and needs problem-solving well beyond the school book.
Yes. CISCE schools choose their own books up to Class 8, often denser than NCERT and strong on English grammar and composition. Mention the book series when you request a tutor, and we look for someone who has taught from it or from similar ICSE-style material in Lucknow or online.
Only with guidance. The tutor can help choose a topic, explain the idea and check that the write-up makes sense, but the child should build and write it. In IB MYP schools, where projects are marked against criteria, too much adult help can cost marks and defeat the purpose.
Often, yes, for maths practice and languages, as long as the tutor can see the notebook through a phone or shared screen. Children who lose focus, and science with diagrams, usually do better with a home tutor. One home and one online session a week, with the same tutor, works well.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour, with senior classes and IB/IGCSE at the upper end. Middle-school quotes usually sit lower. The number of subjects, the board, the trip to your locality and the weekly frequency change the figure, shown before the demo.
