Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Our Lucknow city guide makes a simple point: a UP Board student taught in Hindi, an ISC student and an IGCSE student need different tutors even in the same subject. IGCSE students are a smaller group in the city, and the tutor they need is one who treats the exam as a craft: command words, the correct tier, and marking past papers against the official scheme. This page explains how IGCSE is examined, why the tier matters so much, how the Cambridge science papers are weighted, which subjects Lucknow families usually ask about, how tutors reach each zone, and what to check at the free demo. It is by Ajay Vatsyayan, who teaches IB, IGCSE and ISC maths on NXTutors. For a longer treatment of the board, see the IGCSE guide.
The Lucknow tutors page lists CBSE as widely followed, CISCE as strong and long-standing, many UP Board families, and a smaller number of IB and Cambridge IGCSE students. We give no percentages. In matching terms, an IGCSE request in Lucknow may need the third ring of our search, tutors from elsewhere in the city, or an online specialist, especially for a Cambridge practical-route science or Additional Maths. Board and class are matched together, so tell us the exact codes.
Broadly, the Indian boards examine a set of subjects from prescribed textbooks and award a combined result. IGCSE treats each subject as its own qualification, with its own syllabus code, papers, tier and grade. Mark schemes reward particular key points and respond closely to command words: "state" wants a fact, "describe" an account, "explain" a reason, "suggest" a reasoned idea for an unfamiliar case. Students who come from ICSE can write too much; students from CBSE can write too little. A tutor should teach the length and shape each command word asks for.
| Area | Cambridge IGCSE | Pearson Edexcel International GCSE |
|---|---|---|
| Grades | A* to G on the common codes | 9 to 1 |
| Maths tiers | Core or Extended (0580) | Foundation or Higher (4MA1) |
| Maths calculator rule | One paper without a calculator; scientific calculator only on the other | Calculator on both papers |
| Sciences | Tiered; multiple choice, theory and a practical paper | Untiered; two written papers with practical skills inside |
| Exam series | June and November, and March in India | Maths A in January and June |
Schools choose the awarding body, sometimes differently for different subjects. Our Cambridge versus Edexcel guide compares the papers in detail.
The tier fixes the highest grade available. Cambridge 0580 Core candidates take Papers 1 and 3 and can reach C to G; Extended candidates take Papers 2 and 4 and can reach A* to E. Cambridge science Extended adds Supplement content and allows A* to G, Core allows C to G. In Edexcel maths, Foundation aims at 5 to 1 and Higher at 9 to 4. Schools usually settle the tier during Grade 10, using test results. A borderline student therefore needs Grade 9 and the first part of Grade 10 spent on Supplement topics and harder multi-step problems, so the evidence points up. A student already entered for Core needs a different plan: every reachable method mark, careful reading and units.
| Paper | Size and time | Share | How to practise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multiple choice | 40 questions, 45 minutes | 30% | Timed sets; review why each wrong option is wrong |
| Theory | 80 marks, 1 hour 15 minutes | 50% | Structured answers checked against mark-scheme key words |
| Practical test or alternative to practical | 40 marks | 20% | Methods, variables, results tables, graphs, reliability |
The tier decides which multiple-choice and theory papers; the school decides between the practical test and the alternative paper. Edexcel's untiered sciences have no separate practical paper, and their longer written questions reward clear extended answers.
Cambridge designs each syllabus around roughly 130 guided learning hours. A March entry shortens the last stretch compared with June, so ask which series your child sits and plan back from it. For a Lucknow family that also means planning the commute: if the right tutor lives across the Gomti or beyond the Red Line, agree early which weeks will be online, so the final months are not lost to traffic or exam-season schedules. Write the plan down and share it with the tutor.
An hour with an IGCSE tutor should leave a trace on paper. Expect it to open with the error log: two or three mistakes from last week, redone correctly. Then one topic is taught or repaired, with examples phrased as the papers phrase them, so the student practises recognising a command word as much as the content behind it. The final third is past-paper questions on that topic under time, marked with the official scheme while the student watches, so the exact words or steps that earn marks become familiar. The tutor should finish by setting a short, pointed task, perhaps six questions on one weak skill, and send you a line on what was done. A lesson that is mostly explanation, with no timed questions and no marking, is only half a lesson.
Cambridge Additional Mathematics (0606) and Edexcel Further Pure Mathematics (4PM1) go further into algebra, functions and calculus than the main maths syllabus. They make sense for a student whose main maths grade is already secure and who enjoys the subject, particularly one heading for demanding maths in Grades 11 and 12 or in the IB Diploma. They are a poor choice for a student still fighting for a grade in the main paper, because the extra hours come from the same week. Whether either course is offered is the school's decision, so ask before planning tuition around it.
After Grade 10: IB tutors in Lucknow for the Diploma, or switching between CBSE and IB or IGCSE for a bridging plan to CBSE or ISC.
Home lessons suit Grade 9 and the Cambridge non-calculator paper, where working must be checked line by line. Online lessons widen the choice when the right specialist is far away, provided the tutor sees the student's working live. Many families combine one of each with the same tutor; see the home and online comparison.
You see two or three tutors with their fees before the demo, and switching later costs nothing. Tutors who join go through an ID check.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. The subject, tier, time to the exam and the tutor's travel set the fee. See the pricing guide and Lucknow tuition fees.

Yes, though IGCSE students are a smaller group in the city, so the right specialist may live some distance away. Send the awarding body, subject code, tier, grade and your locality. We search near you first, then across Lucknow, and suggest a home and online mix when the right tutor lives far off.
Because it caps the grade. In Cambridge maths, Core candidates can reach C to G and Extended candidates A* to E. In Cambridge sciences, Core allows C to G and Extended A* to G. Schools usually fix the tier in Grade 10, so a borderline student should work at the higher tier early.
Whether the school enters the practical test or the alternative-to-practical paper, both are worth 40 marks and 20% of the grade. Practice should cover planning a method, naming variables, drawing results tables with units, plotting graphs and commenting on reliability. A tutor should use past papers and the published mark scheme.
The content is often familiar; the answer style is not. ICSE rewards long, full written answers, while IGCSE mark schemes reward precise key points shaped by command words such as describe, explain and suggest. Students from ICSE often write too much. A tutor should practise answer length and the calculator rules early.
Not simply. Edexcel 4MA1 allows a calculator on both papers and grades 9 to 1, with Foundation and Higher tiers. Cambridge 0580 has one paper without a calculator and grades A* to G, with Core and Extended tiers. The tier your child is entered for affects the outcome more than the board does.
Some do, but neither area has a metro station, so lessons depend on tutors with their own transport, ideally living in the same belt. Arrange a standing gate pass in the first week. For a specialist who lives across the city, an online session alongside a weekly home lesson is usually more sustainable.
