Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 Extended is the tier for students aiming at grade C or above, and the only tier that can lead to an A or A*. Extended candidates sit two 2-hour papers of 100 marks each: Paper 2 without a calculator and Paper 4 with one, each worth half the grade. The Extended content includes all of Core plus topics such as functions, differentiation, surds and exact trigonometric values. An Extended tutor's job is to secure that content, build non-calculator fluency for Paper 2, and train the long, structured problems of Paper 4. This page covers only the Extended tier; the broader IGCSE maths tutor guide compares 0580 with Additional Mathematics 0606 and Edexcel 4MA1.
| Paper | Calculator | Time | Marks | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 2 | Not allowed | 2 hours | 100 | 50% |
| Paper 4 | Scientific calculator required | 2 hours | 100 | 50% |
Both papers have structured and unstructured questions on the Extended content, and a list of formulas is printed on page 2 of each. Extended candidates are eligible for grades A* to E. The syllabus for 2028 to 2030 keeps the same Extended papers, and Cambridge states there are no significant changes that affect teaching. Exams are available in June and November, and schools in India can also enter candidates in March.
The Extended content contains all of the Core content and goes further across nine topic areas: number; algebra and graphs; coordinate geometry; geometry; mensuration; trigonometry; transformations and vectors; probability; and statistics. Topics that often surprise students coming from a Core-level start include:
Cambridge also removed some topics from Extended for 2025, including linear programming and box-and-whisker plots. Older past papers can therefore contain questions that are no longer on the syllabus; a tutor should know which ones to skip.
Cambridge assesses two objectives. AO1 is knowledge and understanding of mathematical techniques; AO2 is analysing, interpreting and communicating mathematically. On the Extended tier, AO1 carries 40–50% of the marks and AO2 50–60%; on Core it is the other way round, with AO1 at 60–70%. In practice, more than half of an Extended paper rewards choosing a method, connecting topics and explaining reasoning, not just carrying out a procedure. A student who has drilled techniques but rarely meets unfamiliar multi-step problems will find Extended papers harder than their topic knowledge suggests.
| Paper 2 (non-calculator) | Paper 4 (calculator) | |
|---|---|---|
| Core skill | Exact arithmetic: fractions, surds, indices, exact trigonometric values | Long structured problems across several topics |
| Typical slip | Sign and fraction errors under time pressure | Rounding too early, or giving answers to the wrong accuracy |
| Practice habit | Short daily sets without a calculator on the desk | Full questions with every intermediate value kept on the calculator |
A small non-calculator example of the kind Paper 2 rewards: simplify √50 + √18. Write √50 = √(25 × 2) = 5√2 and √18 = √(9 × 2) = 3√2, so the sum is 8√2. A student who reaches for decimals cannot give the exact answer the question wants. Surds were added to the Extended content for 2025, so past papers from before 2025 have fewer questions like this.
On Paper 4, the common loss is accuracy. Check the accuracy instructions on the front of the paper and keep full values on the calculator until the final line.
Under E6.3 of the 2025–2027 syllabus, Extended candidates must know the exact values of sin x and cos x for x = 0°, 30°, 45°, 60° and 90°, and of tan x for x = 0°, 30°, 45° and 60°.
| x | 0° | 30° | 45° | 60° | 90° |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| sin x | 0 | 1/2 | √2/2 | √3/2 | 1 |
| cos x | 1 | √3/2 | √2/2 | 1/2 | 0 |
| tan x | 0 | √3/3 | 1 | √3 | – |
These matter on the non-calculator Paper 2, where a question can combine an exact value with surds. A tutor should check that the student can derive them from the two standard triangles, not only recall the table.
The 0580 syllabus lists the command words used in its papers. Four of them decide how much working a student must show:
| Command word | Cambridge's meaning | What it means for working |
|---|---|---|
| Show (that) | Provide structured evidence that leads to a given result | Every step written; the given answer earns nothing on its own |
| Work out | Calculate from given facts, figures or information, with or without a calculator | Method shown so that method marks are available |
| Write down | Give an answer without significant working | A short answer is expected; long working wastes time |
| Explain | Set out purposes or reasons, say why and/or how, with relevant evidence | A sentence of reasoning, not only a number |
The school makes the entry. Cambridge's guidance is that candidates who have studied the Extended content and are expected to achieve grade C or above should be entered for Papers 2 and 4; those expected to achieve grade D or below should take Core, where the available grades are C to G. Because Core cannot lead to a grade above C, the tier decision matters for students who need a B or above for their next course, for example IB Diploma maths, A Level or Class 11 science. If you are unsure, ask the school how the decision is made and when, and ask a tutor for evidence from Extended-style questions before it is made.
| Period | Focus with the tutor |
|---|---|
| Grade 9, first half | Number and algebra foundations without a calculator: fractions, indices, rearranging, surds |
| Grade 9, second half | Functions, coordinate geometry and trigonometry, including exact values |
| Grade 10, first term | Remaining Extended topics, including differentiation; mixed questions across topics |
| Grade 10, before the series | Timed Paper 2 and Paper 4 practice on the current syllabus, marked against the mark scheme; repair of lost marks |
Cambridge designs IGCSE syllabuses for about 130 guided learning hours, so the plan has to fit around school lessons, not replace them. Split practice evenly between the two papers: a student strong with a calculator can still lose a grade on Paper 2.
Tutors teach IGCSE maths at home in Gurugram (IGCSE maths tutors in Gurgaon) and online across India (online maths classes). You see two or three matched tutors and their fees before a free demo class. Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. More of this section is on the IB and IGCSE tutors page.
In Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580, Extended candidates sit Paper 2, without a calculator, and Paper 4, with a scientific calculator. Each is 2 hours long, has 100 marks and is worth 50% of the grade. Extended candidates are eligible for grades A* to E. A list of formulas is printed in both papers.
Extended includes all of the Core content plus more, such as functions, differentiation, surds and exact trigonometric values. Core candidates sit Papers 1 and 3 and can achieve grades C to G; Extended candidates sit Papers 2 and 4 and can achieve A* to E. Cambridge advises Extended for students expected to reach grade C or above.
Yes, for exams from 2025. Cambridge added surds, domain and range, exact trigonometric values and recall of certain squares, cubes and roots to Extended, and removed topics including linear programming and box-and-whisker plots. The syllabus for 2028 to 2030 states there are no significant changes that affect teaching.
Cambridge offers 0580 in the June and November series, and schools in India can also enter candidates in the March series. The school makes the entry, so ask which series your child is entered for; a tutor's plan works backwards from that date.
Look for a tutor who teaches 0580 Extended for your exam series, uses past papers that match the current syllabus, and builds non-calculator methods for Paper 2 as well as calculator skills for Paper 4. Use the free demo to see how they handle an unfamiliar multi-step question.
Tutors set their own fees, and you see each shortlisted tutor's fee before the demo. Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.
