IGCSE maths tutors in Kolkata: tier, calculator rules and the route after Year 11

Cambridge IGCSE maths looks simple on a timetable, two papers and a grade, but a family in Kolkata has more decisions tied to it than most. Is your child entered for Core or Extended? Is Additional Mathematics on the table? Which exam series, June, November or the March series open to schools in India? And what comes after: the IB Diploma, ISC, CBSE, or the state's Higher Secondary, each of which treats calculators and written working differently? This page answers those questions and explains how a home tutor can reach you, from Jodhpur Park to Rajarhat. It is written by Ajay Vatsyayan, who teaches IB, IGCSE and ISC maths on NXTutors, and sits under our maths home tutors in Kolkata page and the IGCSE tutors in Kolkata hub.

Core or Extended: the choice that sets the ceiling

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580) is offered at two tiers. Core covers a narrower syllabus and leads to grades C to G; Extended covers the full syllabus and leads to grades A* to E. Both are built from the same nine topic areas, which Cambridge says are not listed in teaching order, and the syllabus assumes about 130 guided learning hours.

Entry is usually decided by the school, but parents should know what it means. A student entered for Core cannot score above a C however well they do. A student entered for Extended who struggles badly can fall below E and go ungraded. A tutor's first job, often in Year 10, is to show the family honestly where the student stands so the school's entry decision is an informed one. Our Core versus Extended guide goes deeper.

The four papers in one table

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 components (exams 2025 to 2027)
TierNon-calculator paperCalculator paperGrades
CorePaper 1: 1 h 30 min, 80 marks, 50%Paper 3: 1 h 30 min, 80 marks, 50%C to G
ExtendedPaper 2: 2 h, 100 marks, 50%Paper 4: 2 h, 100 marks, 50%A* to E

Cambridge's accuracy rules are worth learning early because they cost marks every series: answers to three significant figures unless the question says otherwise, angles to one decimal place, π from the calculator or as 3.142, and no rounding in the middle of a calculation. Markers award method (M) marks, accuracy (A) marks and independent (B) marks, so a correct method written down still earns credit after an arithmetic slip. The content was revised for exams from 2025, so make sure any past papers your child uses match the current syllabus or have been checked against it.

Cambridge runs June and November exam series, and a March series is also available to schools in India. The series matters more than families expect: a March entry pulls the final revision forward by about three months, past the Puja holidays and into the winter, so the tutor's plan for Year 11 has to start earlier. Ask the school which series your child is entered for, and put it in your request.

Half the marks without a calculator

Papers 1 and 2 forbid the calculator, and they carry the same weight as the calculator papers. On the calculator papers only a scientific calculator is allowed; graphical and algebraic models are not. In practice, the non-calculator paper is where many capable students lose a grade: fractions, percentages, standard form and estimation all have to be done by hand under time pressure.

  • Little and often. Ten minutes of mental and written arithmetic at the start of every session does more than an occasional long drill.
  • Show the method. Method marks survive a slip; an answer alone does not.
  • Calculator fluency too. On Papers 3 and 4, students should know their own model's statistics and table functions well enough to check answers quickly.

This balance matters even more in Kolkata, because one possible next step, the state's Higher Secondary, allows no calculator in any semester examination.

Should your child add Additional Mathematics (0606)?

Additional Mathematics is a separate Cambridge qualification for strong Extended students. It has two papers of two hours and 80 marks each, the first without and the second with a calculator, and grades from A* to E. It goes well beyond 0580 in depth and pace, so check its syllabus on Cambridge's site before committing.

It suits students heading for IB Maths AA at Higher Level, ISC mathematics with a science stream, or engineering entrances later. It is less useful for a student who is already stretched by 0580 Extended; a solid A in the main paper usually matters more than a weak grade in both. A tutor who teaches both can tell after a few weeks which side of that line your child is on.

After IGCSE: IB, ISC, CBSE or Higher Secondary

The step after Year 11 shapes how a tutor should finish IGCSE. The state's Council of Higher Secondary Education lists the Cambridge IGCSE among the boards it treats as equivalent for entry, and ICSE and ISC have a long following in the city, so Kolkata students have several realistic routes.

Where IGCSE maths students go next, and what to prepare
Next stepWhat changesWhat to start before the switch
IB DiplomaChoice of AA or AI, SL or HL; exploration; Paper 3 at HLAlgebra and functions; for AA, more non-calculator work
ISCLong written answers, full working, a projectProof-style layout and calculus foundations
CBSE Class 11NCERT books; case-based and assertion-reason questionsSets, functions and trigonometry in NCERT's order
West Bengal Higher SecondarySemester system; one-mark MCQ semesters; no calculator at allMental arithmetic and quick option elimination

A two-year plan for Years 10 and 11

How tutoring time is usually spent
StageFocusRhythm
Year 10, first termGaps from earlier years; number and algebra; non-calculator habitsOne or two a week
Year 10, later termsGeometry, trigonometry, vectors and statistics as the school reaches them; topic tests to Cambridge markingOne or two a week
Puja holidaysA planned revision block, online if travel is difficultAs agreed
Year 11 to mocksPast papers by paper number, timed; examiner reports read togetherTwo a week
Final weeksFull papers under exam conditions; error log reviewedTwo or three a week

Cambridge's examiner reports, published after each series, describe where candidates lost marks question by question. A tutor who reads them with the student turns somebody else's mistakes into free practice.

How tutors reach you across Kolkata

IGCSE families are spread across the city, so we match the syllabus and tier first and then look for a journey that will hold. Notes from our zone guides:

See every locality on the Kolkata home tutors page, or read our guide to North Kolkata and Howrah.

Home or online for IGCSE maths?

The non-calculator papers are where a tutor in the room earns their fee, watching each line of working and stopping a habit before it sets. Past-paper review and examiner-report reading work equally well online. Because IGCSE specialists are fewer than CBSE or ICSE maths tutors in Kolkata, online also widens the choice when no one nearby teaches the right tier. Our online versus offline tutoring guide weighs the options, and our Cambridge and Edexcel comparison helps if you are unsure which board your school uses.

Six questions for an IGCSE maths demo

  1. Which syllabus code and tier? The tutor should ask for 0580 or 0606, Core or Extended, and the exam series.
  2. How do you build non-calculator speed? Expect a concrete routine, not "lots of practice".
  3. How do M, A and B marks work? A good tutor explains them using your child's own test.
  4. Which past papers will you use? Listen for awareness of the 2025 syllabus changes.
  5. What happens after Year 11? The tutor should ask about the next board and adjust the final term.
  6. The route. Which station or road, at what time, and the plan for the Puja weeks.

IGCSE Maths Tutor in Kolkata (Core & Extended): common questions

How much does an IGCSE maths tutor cost in Kolkata?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each tutor sets their own fee, and you see it on the profile before the free demo.

What is the difference between Core and Extended IGCSE maths?

Core (Papers 1 and 3) covers a narrower syllabus and is graded C to G. Extended (Papers 2 and 4) covers the full syllabus and is graded A* to E. In each tier one paper is sat without a calculator and both papers count equally. The school usually decides the entry.

Why does my child lose marks on the non-calculator paper?

Usually because arithmetic by hand has grown rusty: fractions, percentages, standard form and estimation under time pressure. The fix is short, regular practice rather than occasional long drills, plus writing the method every time so method marks survive a slip. A tutor can build this into every session.

Should my child take IGCSE Additional Mathematics as well?

Only if the main Extended paper is secure. Additional Mathematics (0606) is a separate qualification with two two-hour papers, graded A* to E, and it suits students heading for IB Maths AA HL, ISC science or engineering. A solid grade in 0580 usually matters more than a weak grade in both.

Can my child join Higher Secondary or ISC after IGCSE in Kolkata?

Yes. The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education lists the Cambridge IGCSE among boards it treats as equivalent, and ISC, CBSE and the IB are also open routes. The tutor should know which one is next, because calculator rules and the style of written answers differ sharply between them.

Which IGCSE exam series will my child sit?

Cambridge runs June and November series, and a March series is available to schools in India. Your school decides the entry. A March entry means final revision starts months earlier, so tell us the series in your request and the tutor will plan Year 11 around it.

Is online IGCSE maths tuition a good idea in Kolkata?

It can be, especially if no tutor near you teaches your child's tier. Past papers and examiner reports work well online. For the non-calculator papers, the tutor needs to see handwritten working, so use a second camera over the notebook or keep one session a week at home.
