Salt Lake and New Town Home Tuition Guide: Rajarhat to Dum Dum
East and north-east Kolkata grew in three different ways. Salt Lake was built on reclaimed wetlands as a planned township of plotted houses. New Town followed from the late 1990s as a larger planned city of apartment complexes and offices. And the belt along VIP Road and Jessore Road, from Lake Town to Dum Dum and Baguiati, grew as a mix of flats, builder floors and older houses around some of the city's busiest rail junctions.
This guide covers three zones: Salt Lake; New Town & Rajarhat; and Lake Town, Dum Dum & Baguiati. For each it sets out the rail links open today, how addresses and gates work, and which class times suit.
What is open on the metro, and what is not yet?
The map here is changing. The Green Line runs through Salt Lake and has been joined end to end since 22 August 2025, giving one continuous line from Salt Lake Sector V through Sealdah and Esplanade to Howrah Maidan. The Blue Line has served Dum Dum since 1984, and the Yellow Line has run from Noapara through Dum Dum Cantonment to the airport since August 2025. In New Town, the Orange Line stations are still under construction, so tutors reach those homes by road.
| Zone | Open today | Still being built | Typical first visit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Salt Lake | Green Line: City Centre, Central Park, Karunamoyee, Bengal Chemical, Salt Lake Stadium, Salt Lake Sector V | None needed for most blocks | Doorstep at a plotted house |
| New Town & Rajarhat | Nearest working metro is Salt Lake Sector V, then bus, auto or cab | Orange Line stations such as Nazrul Tirtha and Eco Park, and the station at VIP Road | Gate desk at a complex |
| Lake Town, Dum Dum & Baguiati | Blue Line at Dum Dum and Belgachia, Yellow Line through Dum Dum Cantonment, suburban lines at Dum Dum Junction and Bidhannagar Road | The Yellow Line's Birati section | Door of a flat in a small building, or a gate in a larger complex |
Salt Lake
Salt Lake, or Bidhannagar, stands on reclaimed wetlands. Reclamation of Sector I was finished in 1965 and plots were handed out from 1966; Sectors II and III were reclaimed by 1969. The first residents moved into a house in AB Block on 9 March 1970. Sector V, further east, is the commercial and IT district rather than a residential one.
For a tutor, the defining feature is the address. Every home is written as a block letter and house number, and blocks carry codes such as AA, AB, BD and BE in Sector I, BL, DL and EE in Sector II, and FD, GD, HA and LA in Sector III. Share the block, the house number and the nearest avenue, and a first-time tutor finds the door easily. Most homes are independent houses that open onto the street, so there is usually no society gate to clear.
The Green Line's first section, from Salt Lake Sector V to Salt Lake Stadium, opened in February 2020. It runs above 3rd Avenue in Sector I, with City Centre and Central Park stations, while Karunamoyee sits in Sector II beside a large bus terminal, and Bengal Chemical and Salt Lake Stadium lie on the EM Bypass side of Sector III. Roads towards Sector V and the EM Bypass are busy at office hours, so an early-evening slot after the rush, or a weekend session, is the easiest to keep.
New Town and Rajarhat
New Town development began in the late 1990s, with HIDCO planning and building the projects and the New Town Kolkata Development Authority running the township. It is divided into three Action Areas, with a central business district between Action Areas I and II, and Biswa Bangla Sarani, the Major Arterial Road, linking them and running towards the airport.
Action Area I mixes plots in blocks AA to AF with government housing estates and private apartment complexes, and Biswa Bangla Gate stands over the main road at Narkelbagan. Action Area II is dominated by apartment complexes around Eco Park, the township's large green belt. Action Area III is mostly two- and three-bedroom flats in complexes and sub-townships, reached by New Town Road and Gitanjali Road.
No metro is running in New Town yet. The Orange Line's stations, including Nazrul Tirtha in Action Area 1A and Eco Park in Action Area IIE, are under construction. Until they open, tutors come by bus, app cab, auto or their own two-wheeler, often after changing from the Green Line at Salt Lake Sector V. A tutor who already lives in New Town, Rajarhat or Baguiati is the easiest fit, and online classes fill gaps.
Rajarhat is the older area around which New Town was planned, and since 2015 it has been part of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation. Rajarhat Main Road runs from Jora Mandir near Baguiati through Chinar Park to Rajarhat Chowmatha, and VIP Road meets Biswa Bangla Sarani at Teghoria. Across the whole zone, complexes register visitors, so send the tutor's name, tower and flat number to the gate before the demo, and keep class times away from the office peaks at the Chinar Park and Teghoria crossings.
Lake Town, Dum Dum and Baguiati
VIP Road, completed in 1962, is the spine of this zone. It runs from Ultadanga to the airport past Lake Town, Bangur Avenue, Dum Dum Park, Kestopur, Baguiati and Teghoria. The Ultadanga flyover opened in 2011 and the Kestopur–Baguiati flyover in March 2015. Jessore Road, the main road through Dum Dum, runs along the northern side of Lake Town and Bangur Avenue.
Lake Town is a planned area of parks and a lake between VIP Road and Jessore Road, with apartment buildings, builder floors and older houses. Bangur Avenue, between the same two roads, is mostly low- and mid-rise apartment buildings, and both fall under the South Dum Dum Municipality. Bidhannagar Road station serves this side on the suburban network. Kestopur, in the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation with VIP Road on its western edge, has been linked directly to Salt Lake by a bridge since 2022, so tutors from Karunamoyee or Sector V can reach it more easily.
Baguiati has no metro station yet and spreads across several sub-localities off VIP Road, so share an exact landmark with a first-time tutor. Dum Dum, including Nagerbazar, is the opposite: one of the city's main transit hubs, with Dum Dum Junction on the Sealdah–Ranaghat line and the start of the Circular Railway, Dum Dum Cantonment on the Sealdah–Bangaon line, the Blue Line since 1984 and the Yellow Line since 2025. For a tutor it is one of the easiest parts of the city to reach by train or metro.
Most visits here are to a flat in a small building or a house, so the tutor goes straight to the door; larger complexes note a name at the gate. Leave a margin around the evening peak on VIP Road and Jessore Road.
Three habits that keep classes on time here
- Give the full address format: block letter and house number in Salt Lake, Action Area, tower and flat number in New Town, and the sub-locality with a landmark along VIP Road.
- Clear the gate once: in New Town, Rajarhat and the larger complexes, ask the security desk to note the tutor's name and phone number before the first class.
- Match the slot to the trip: a tutor on the Green, Blue or Yellow Line can keep an early-evening slot; one coming by road does better soon after school.
How NXTutors can help
Tell us your block, Action Area or locality, with the class, board and subject, and we shortlist two or three matched tutors, starting with those nearest you, at home where tutors are available and online across India. You see each tutor's fee before the demo, the first class is a free demo, and switching tutor later is free. Start with maths home tutors in Kolkata, science, physics or chemistry, or see every locality on home tutors across Kolkata.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a metro station in New Town yet?
Not yet. The Orange Line stations in New Town, including Nazrul Tirtha and Eco Park, are under construction. Until they open, the nearest working metro is Salt Lake Sector V on the Green Line, and most tutors finish the trip by bus, auto or app cab, or come on their own two-wheeler.
How should a Salt Lake family share its address with a tutor?
Give the sector, the block letter and the house number, plus the nearest avenue or metro station, such as City Centre or Karunamoyee. That is how every Salt Lake address is written. Most homes are independent houses, so the tutor usually rings the bell directly with no society gate to clear.
Do New Town complexes need the tutor's details in advance?
Yes, in almost every case. Most New Town and Rajarhat homes are in gated complexes that register visitors, so send the tutor's name, phone number, your tower and flat number to the security desk before the free demo. Ask about visitor parking if the tutor is coming by car or two-wheeler.
When is the easiest time for a home class near VIP Road?
Soon after school, or after the evening rush. VIP Road and Jessore Road both carry airport traffic and are busiest at office hours. A tutor who comes by metro to Dum Dum or Belgachia, or by suburban train to Bidhannagar Road, and finishes by auto can usually keep an early-evening slot.
How much does home tuition cost in Salt Lake and New Town?
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each tutor sets their own fee, and you see it before the free demo.
