How are the 70 theory marks spread across CBSE Class 12 chemistry?

In Class 12 chemistry the CBSE curriculum gives every chapter its own mark value, which maths and physics do not. The theory paper (043) runs three hours for 70 marks, with 33 compulsory questions across Sections A to E and an internal choice in some. Neither calculators nor log tables may be used. The 2026-27 sample paper repeats last session's design.

Added by branch, organic chemistry carries 33 marks, physical 23 and inorganic 14. Close to half the paper is therefore organic, and its conversions need weekly practice from the first month. Electrochemistry, the heaviest single chapter, is mostly numerical. Around 40% of the marks reward remembering and understanding; the other 60% ask the student to apply, analyse or evaluate. Which topics have left the board paper, and which still matter for entrance exams?

Two areas are no longer in the 2026-27 Class 12 syllabus at all: the solid state, and Groups 15 to 18 of the p-block. Four others remain but are assessed only by the school: polymers, chemistry in everyday life, surface chemistry, and the isolation of elements from their ores. Hand-me-down notes that give these full weight can cost a student weeks.

NEET and JEE Main follow NTA's own syllabi, and some material the board has dropped, including p-block chemistry, can still appear there. An entrance candidate should read the official list before skipping anything. Why does each branch need its own way of studying?

• Physical chemistry: solve. Solutions, electrochemistry and kinetics are learnt by working problems with units carried through, then checking whether the answer is sensible. Reading alone does little.
• Organic chemistry: map. Each chapter adds to one reaction map linking haloalkanes, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, acids and amines. Drawing it from memory, then checking it against the book, is the most useful short task for a day without tuition.
• Inorganic chemistry: explain, then recall. Trends in the d- and f-block and the rules of coordination compounds stick when the tutor explains why they happen, and then tests the facts in short bursts.

A session that touches two branches, with a short written "give reasons" answer at the end marked on the spot, keeps all three moving without letting one crowd out the others.

What do NEET and JEE ask of chemistry?

NEET (UG) 2026 was one written paper of 180 questions for 720 marks, with chemistry making up a quarter: 45 questions worth 180. JEE Main 2026 Paper 1 gave chemistry 25 of its 75 questions, 20 multiple-choice and 5 with a numerical answer. Both scored +4 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong one. NEET rewards fast, exact recall of NCERT lines, especially in inorganic and organic chemistry, so a tutor should test straight from the book. JEE goes further, with mechanisms traced step by step and multi-stage physical chemistry problems. How can a tutor prepare the 30 practical marks at home?

CBSE splits the practical marks into titration (volumetric analysis) 8, salt analysis 8, a content-based experiment 6, the project 4, and the record and viva together 4. For 2026-27 the titration uses potassium permanganate against a standard solution of oxalic acid or ferrous ammonium sulphate (Mohr's salt), and the student weighs out that standard solution personally.

The chemicals stay at school, yet much of the preparation happens at home: the molarity calculation for the weighed solution, a tidy table of burette readings, the order of preliminary and confirmatory tests in salt analysis and the reason behind each, a project the student can carry out alone, and viva questions such as why permanganate titrations need no separate indicator.

Can you find ISC, Higher Secondary, IB or IGCSE chemistry tutors in Kolkata?

• ISC: CISCE assesses theory together with practical and project work, and examiners look for reasons explained in full rather than a single line.
• West Bengal Higher Secondary: the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education sets its own syllabus and papers. We keep advice general: the tutor should teach from the prescribed textbook and take exam details from the council's official notices.
• IB Diploma: SL or HL, built around two themes, structure and reactivity. The scientific investigation belongs to the student; a tutor may question the plan but must not add to it.
