Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Classes 6 to 8 look calm from the outside. There is no board exam, the marks are rarely alarming, and it is tempting to leave tuition until Class 9. Yet these are the years in which arithmetic becomes algebra, science stops being a list of facts, and a child either learns to study alone or does not. In this guide Aaditya Kashyap, who writes on CBSE and ICSE science for NXTutors, and the NXTutors Academic Team explain what changes in the middle years on each board a Kolkata child might follow, which subjects most often need help, the habits worth building before Class 9, and how to choose a tutor who can reach your neighbourhood every week.
A child who coped well in Class 5 can stumble here simply because the work is organised differently. That is the right moment to bring a tutor in: not to re-teach everything, but to show how to learn a chapter alone.
| Board | Books and structure | What the tutor should know |
|---|---|---|
| West Bengal Board of Secondary Education | The board publishes the Class VI to VIII textbooks. Its 2026 calendar lists maths (Ganit Prava), science as Paribesh-o-Bigyan, history as Otit-o-Aitijya and geography as Amader Prithibi, plus a third language in VII and VIII | Formative assessment through the year and three summative evaluations, normally in the first week of April, August and December |
| CBSE | NCERT's middle-school books, Ganita Prakash for maths and Curiosity for science; three languages, with the third compulsory from Class VI in 2026-27 | The newer books ask for reasoning and activities, not only answers |
| CISCE (ICSE schools) | Books chosen by the school; a third language from at least Class V to VIII, examined internally | Work from your school's own texts; ICSE-style full working starts here |
| IB Middle Years Programme | Ages 11 to 16 across eight subject groups | Criterion-based tasks and inquiry, not chapter drills |
| Cambridge Lower Secondary | Typically ages 11 to 14; Checkpoint is optional | Follow the school's stages in English, maths and science |
State-board schools teach in Bengali, English and other media, and the board's own books carry Bengali titles, so a tutor for a state-board child should be comfortable in the medium the child is taught in. For the full picture of the state board, see our guide to the West Bengal board in Kolkata; for the others, our CBSE, ICSE, IB and IGCSE pages for Kolkata.
| Subject | Typical slip | What a tutor does |
|---|---|---|
| Maths | Sign errors with negative numbers; algebra learnt as rules without meaning | Number lines, balancing equations with objects, then written steps |
| Science | Memorised definitions that collapse when the question is reworded | Simple home experiments, diagrams drawn from memory, "explain why" questions |
| History and geography | Long answers that list facts without order | Timelines, maps and a short structure for a five-mark answer |
| English | Grammar exercises right, writing weak | Weekly paragraphs, corrected and rewritten |
| Second and third language | Spelling and reading left until the test | Short, regular reading and dictation rather than full tuition |
Maths and science are where a tutor most often earns the fee in these years. Our maths and science home tutors in Kolkata pages go deeper, and the national Class 7 maths and Class 8 science pages outline the topics.
A tutor's main job in Class 8 is to make himself less necessary. If by the end of the year your child still cannot revise a chapter alone, change the approach before Class 9 begins.
Middle-school projects, models and activity files carry marks on most boards, and the state board's calendar asks schools to record each child's progress through tasks and portfolios in these classes. A tutor can help your child choose a topic, plan the steps and check the explanation. The cutting, sticking and writing should be the child's. A project that looks professionally made teaches nothing and is easy for a teacher to spot.
Some children find middle-school maths and science easy and lose interest. A tutor can stretch them sideways rather than racing ahead: puzzles, harder problems from the same chapter, reading beyond the textbook, and olympiad-style questions. Our article on olympiad preparation explains the main contests. Avoid starting Class 9 or 10 syllabus early; it rarely helps and often bores the child in class later.
In schools under the state board, the 2026 calendar sets the school day from 10.40 in the morning to 4.30 in the afternoon; other schools set their own hours. Either way, tuition tends to land in the early evening, which is exactly when Kolkata's main roads are slowest.
| Zone | Typical route | Slot advice |
|---|---|---|
| Behala & New Alipore | Purple Line along Diamond Harbour Road, then an auto | Weekend mornings; Diamond Harbour Road is slow in the evening peak |
| Tollygunge, Jadavpur & Garia | Blue Line, with suburban trains at Jadavpur, Baghajatin and Garia | A tutor on the metro keeps time better than one driving |
| Kasba & EM Bypass South | Orange Line stations along the bypass | Afternoon or weekend near the bypass junctions |
| Salt Lake | Green Line, now linked through to Sealdah, Esplanade and Howrah Maidan | After the evening Sector V rush |
| Lake Town, Dum Dum & Baguiati | Bidhannagar Road station or the Blue Line, then VIP Road | Add slack for airport traffic in the evening |
| North Kolkata | Blue Line to Sovabazar Sutanuti or Shyambazar, then on foot | Later evening, after market-hour crowds thin |
Both work at this age. Home visits suit children who drift easily or who need someone to check their notebook line by line. Online suits a focused child, or a subject such as maths or English where a specialist from another part of the city, or another city, is a better fit than whoever lives nearby. Online maths only works if the tutor can see the working live, through a tablet, a shared whiteboard or a phone camera over the page. Many families keep one home session for maths and science and take a language or English online. Our online versus offline tutoring article compares the two.
The first class with the tutor you choose is free, and switching to another tutor later is free too. Tutors who join go through an ID check before their profile is marked Verified.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. For the middle classes, the board, how many subjects the tutor covers, sessions a week and the journey set the quote. Each tutor sets their own fee and you see it before the demo. See home tuition fees in Kolkata and the pricing guide.
Bansdroni is almost wholly residential, with Masterda Surya Sen as its metro stop, so tutors from Tollygunge or Garia can come by Blue Line and walk the rest. In Thakurpukur, the Purple Line station on Diamond Harbour Road brings tutors from Behala and Taratala close to most doors. Sovabazar has both a Blue Line station and a Circular Railway stop near the river, and visits are usually straight to the door.
Lake Town lies between VIP Road and Jessore Road, with Bidhannagar Road and Dum Dum Junction as the nearest stations. In Mukundapur, newer complexes along the bypass register visitors at the gate, and Jyotirindra Nandi on the Orange Line is the local station. Salt Lake Sector I, the oldest part of the township, has City Centre and Central Park stations inside it; share the block letter and house number when you book.
Before these years, see primary tutors; after them, Class 9 home tutors in Kolkata. Book a free demo, browse tutor profiles, or see every neighbourhood on the Kolkata home tutors page.
Class 6 is not too early to start a home tutor in Kolkata if there is a clear reason. It is when subjects split, maths turns abstract and homework assumes independence, so a tutor who teaches a child to learn a chapter alone saves later struggle. If marks and habits are fine, wait and review before Class 8 ends.
To find a Class 6 to 8 home tutor in Kolkata, send the class, board, medium, subjects, neighbourhood and hours. We reply with two or three matched tutors, each fee shown before the first class. The first class is a free demo, and switching tutor later is free.

Kolkata state-board schools use the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education's own textbooks for Classes 6 to 8. Its 2026 calendar lists maths as Ganit Prava, science as Paribesh-o-Bigyan, history as Otit-o-Aitijya and geography as Amader Prithibi. Check the edition and medium with your school before the tutor starts.
West Bengal board students in Kolkata are assessed in Classes 6 to 8 through formative assessment across the year plus three summative evaluations, the board's 2026 calendar says. Schools also record progress through tasks and portfolios. A tutor should plan revision before each summative rather than treating the year as one stretch.
Maths and science most need a tutor in Classes 6 to 8 in Kolkata. Gaps open in algebra, negative numbers and fractions, and memorised science answers collapse when questions are reworded. Languages usually need short, regular reading and dictation rather than full tuition, and history or geography need a simple answer structure.
A Kolkata tutor should help with Class 6 to 8 school projects only by helping choose a topic, plan the steps and check the explanation. The cutting, sticking and writing should be your child's own. A project that looks professionally made teaches nothing, and teachers can easily spot adult work.
A Kolkata child should build five study habits in Class 8, before Class 9 arrives. They are reading a chapter before it is taught, showing every maths step, keeping a mistakes notebook, planning the week and asking questions in class. ICSE and the state board both reward complete working. If your child still cannot revise alone by year's end, change the approach.
If your Kolkata child is ahead in Class 6 to 8 maths or science, a tutor should stretch them sideways rather than racing ahead. That means puzzles, harder problems from the same chapter, reading beyond the textbook and olympiad-style questions. Starting the Class 9 or 10 syllabus early rarely helps and often bores the child later.
Both home and online tuition work for Classes 6 to 8 in Kolkata, depending on the child. Home visits suit children who drift or need their notebook checked line by line; online suits a focused child, especially for maths or English with a distant specialist. Many families keep maths and science at home and take English online.
