Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Economics in a Kolkata home might mean CBSE statistics and Indian economic development, ISC's long 12-mark answers, a Higher Secondary paper on the West Bengal council, Cambridge data-response essays or IB commentaries on news articles. The theory overlaps; the skills each paper rewards do not. NXTutors asks for the course, the part that is going wrong and your neighbourhood, then sends two or three economics tutors who can visit or teach online, with every fee shown up front and a free first class with the one you choose.
| Course | Content in brief | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| CBSE Economics (030), Classes 11–12 | Class 11: statistics and introductory microeconomics. Class 12: introductory macroeconomics and Indian economic development | 80-mark theory paper each year, 40 marks per part, and a 20-mark project |
| ISC Economics (856), Classes 11–12 | Class 11: basic concepts, Indian economic development, statistics. Class 12: micro theory, income and employment, money and banking, balance of payments, public finance, national income | 20 compulsory short-answer marks, five 12-mark answers from eight, and two projects of 10 |
| Higher Secondary (WBCHSE), Classes 11–12 | Set by the West Bengal council | Pattern in the council's own syllabus and notices |
| Cambridge IGCSE 0455; AS & A Level 9708 | IGCSE: six sections from the basic economic problem to trade and globalisation. A Level: deeper micro and macro | IGCSE: multiple choice (30%) and structured questions (70%). A Level: multiple choice, data response and essays, unstructured at full A Level |
| IB Economics SL and HL | Introduction, microeconomics, macroeconomics, the global economy | Paper 1 and Paper 2 for both levels, a policy-based Paper 3 at HL only, and an internal assessment |
The practical point: a tutor who is excellent for CBSE Class 12 may never have marked an IB commentary or an unstructured A Level essay, and the reverse is just as true. For IB and Cambridge students, our IB tutor in Kolkata and IGCSE tutor in Kolkata pages explain how we match those programmes.
Parents are often surprised by how much of the grade sits outside the written exam. The table below sets the three main formats side by side.
| Board | What the student submits | A tutor's proper role |
|---|---|---|
| CBSE | One project per session of 3,500–4,000 words, marked for relevance (3), research (6), presentation (3) and a viva (8) | Explaining the economics behind the chosen topic and rehearsing the viva |
| ISC | Two projects of 10 marks each, judged on format, content, findings and a viva | Helping the student test whether a topic has enough data, and practising viva answers |
| IB | A portfolio of three commentaries on published news extracts, from different syllabus units and key concepts (30% at SL, 20% at HL) | Teaching the commentary skill on practice articles and explaining the criteria; never writing or rewriting any part |
On every board the research and the writing must be the student's own. A tutor who offers to "prepare" the project file is a reason to choose someone else.
A commerce or humanities student who drops mathematics after Class 10 then meets CBSE Class 11 statistics: measures of central tendency, correlation, index numbers. It is arithmetic rather than higher mathematics, but it needs tidy, tabulated working, and the CBSE document asks students to interpret the result, not only compute it. In Class 12 the numericals move to national income, the multiplier and the government budget. ISC students meet statistics in Class 11 and national income in Class 12.
A small example of the interpretation habit a tutor builds: if the investment multiplier is 4 and investment rises by ₹500 crore, equilibrium income rises by ₹2,000 crore. The calculation takes one line. The marks that separate students come from the next sentence, explaining that the multiplier is larger when households spend a bigger share of each extra rupee. Tutors who make students say that sentence aloud every time are doing their job.
How a Class 12 CBSE or ISC year with a tutor can be paced, so that nothing is left for the last month:
The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education runs the Class 11 and 12 course for state-board schools and publishes its own economics syllabus, books and question pattern. We keep our advice general and ask families to work from the council's documents. Two things are worth checking with any tutor: that they plan from the council's prescribed book and recent papers, and that they can teach in the language your child writes answers in, whether Bengali or English. Diagrams and definitions travel between languages; exam phrasing has to match the paper.
Kolkata's metro, suburban lines and arterial roads shape which tutor can keep a regular hour at your door. Six neighbourhoods from six zones show the range; the Kolkata home tuition page has every locality.
| Neighbourhood | Way in | Before the first visit |
|---|---|---|
| Kalighat | Kalighat stop on the Blue Line | Floor and bell in older houses; avoid weekend evenings near Gariahat |
| Bansdroni | Masterda Surya Sen station on the Blue Line | A largely residential area, so a door address and landmark are enough |
| Patuli | The Orange Line on the bypass, or the southern rail stations | Block and plot number in the planned township |
| New Town Action Area III | Bus, cab or two-wheeler, often after the Green Line to Sector V | Tower, flat and tutor's name to the complex security desk |
| Kestopur | VIP Road, or the bridge from Salt Lake opened in 2022 | An exact landmark off VIP Road; leave a margin for airport traffic |
| Maniktala | Blue Line or bus, then a short walk through the lanes | A mid-afternoon or later evening slot away from market hours |
The zone guides for New Town and Rajarhat, Lake Town, Dum Dum and Baguiati and Tollygunge, Jadavpur and Garia give station-by-station detail, and the North Kolkata and Howrah guide covers the older half of the city.
Economics moves online more easily than most subjects. Diagrams work on a shared whiteboard, a news article can be read together, and essays can be marked on screen. For IB and A Level students that matters, because the right specialist may live across the river or in another city. Home lessons still help a Class 11 student working through statistics, where a tutor watching the pencil catches slips early, and a younger student who drifts on a screen.
We do not claim a commerce specialist in every neighbourhood. You can request a home tutor anywhere in the city, and where nobody suitable can reach you at your hour, online lessons widen the choice. A common mix in New Town or Kestopur is a weekend home session with weekday online practice. Our article on home or online tutoring sets out the trade-offs.
If it is not the right fit, we arrange the next tutor on the shortlist; switching is free.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own rates and you see each one before the demo; our Kolkata fees article has more.
Students heading for central universities may also sit CUET (UG). The NTA's 2026 bulletin lists Economics / Business Economics (code 309) as a domain subject with 50 compulsory questions in 60 minutes, on NCERT's Class 12 syllabus; check the bulletin for your year. If the stream itself is undecided, our Class 11 stream guide and Class 11 tutoring page, written for Gurugram but general in their advice, may help.
Send the class, board, the weakest skill (definitions, diagrams, numericals or evaluation), the language of answers, your neighbourhood and times. Tutors who join go through an ID check. Commerce students can pair this with our accountancy tutor in Kolkata page; the national economics home tutor guide goes deeper on each board, and the English tutor in Kolkata page helps with essay writing. Economics teachers in the city can find requests on Kolkata tuition jobs.
You can request one for SL or HL, at home or online. Because experienced IB economics tutors are fewer near any one home, online or mixed lessons are often the practical route. Ask the tutor at the demo to explain the internal assessment criteria and confirm they will never write any part of the commentaries.
Yes. We look for tutors who plan from the council's prescribed book and recent question papers and who can teach in Bengali or English, whichever your child writes in. Our advice on the council's paper stays general, so confirm its pattern from the council's own notices.
It need not be. Class 11 statistics is careful arithmetic, not advanced mathematics: averages, correlation and index numbers set out in tidy tables. A tutor who insists on step-by-step working and a sentence interpreting each result usually turns it into one of the steadier parts of the paper.
Both have an 80-mark theory paper, but ISC takes 60 of those marks from five long 12-mark answers, so timed writing matters a great deal. CBSE splits each year into two 40-mark parts and asks more analysis and evaluation. Coursework differs too: one CBSE project against two ISC projects.
Usually, yes. Diagrams work on a shared whiteboard, articles can be read together and answers marked on screen. Online lessons also widen the choice for IB, A Level and ISC students. A Class 11 student starting statistics, or one who drifts on a screen, may do better with home sessions.
No. On CBSE, ISC and IB alike the research and writing must be the student's own. A tutor can explain the economics behind a chosen topic, help judge whether it has enough material, and rehearse the viva. Treat any offer to write the project as a reason to choose someone else.
Each tutor sets a personal rate, shown on the shortlist before the free demo. Senior classes, IB and A Level usually sit toward the upper end of the range given on this page, and travel time at your hour also matters. Our Kolkata fees article explains what moves the figure.
