Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

The jump from Class 10 to Class 11 is the steepest in school. Subjects double in depth, a stream replaces a broad timetable, and some science students add coaching for JEE, NEET or WBJEE in the same year. In Kolkata there is a further twist: the West Bengal Higher Secondary course now runs in semesters, with two examinations in Class 11 alone. This guide from Ajay Vatsyayan, who writes on IB, IGCSE and ISC maths for NXTutors, and the NXTutors Academic Team covers how Class 11 is organised on each board, which subjects need a tutor in each stream, how the entrance tests draw on this year, and how to arrange a tutor who can reach you after a long school and coaching day.
In maths, functions, trigonometry and calculus arrive in quick succession; in physics, vectors and calculus-based mechanics replace formula substitution; in chemistry, physical chemistry calculations sit beside a new way of thinking about organic reactions. Commerce students meet accountancy as a discipline for the first time. A student who scored well in Class 10 by careful memorising can find in the first month that the method no longer works. That is the moment a tutor helps most, before a gap of four or five chapters builds up.
The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education, set up under a 1975 state act and headquartered in Salt Lake, runs the Higher Secondary course in two parts, Class XI and Class XII. Each student takes two languages, a first and a second, and three compulsory elective subjects chosen from one set, with an optional fourth elective if wanted. The council's subject list groups the electives into three sets: Set I is built around the sciences, Set II around commerce and Set III around the humanities, with some subjects offered in more than one set.
| Stage | Format | Who conducts it | Usual month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semester I | Multiple-choice questions, answered on OMR sheets where the school uses them | The school | September |
| Projects and practicals | Done before the Semester II exam | The school | Before March |
| Semester II | Conventional written answer scripts | The school | March |
Three points from the council's FAQ matter for tuition:
Take patterns and dates from wbchse.wb.gov.in and the school. Our page on West Bengal board tutors in Kolkata covers the state board across classes.
| Board | Structure | What to settle early |
|---|---|---|
| ISC (CISCE) | English plus three to five electives, at most six subjects; practicals compulsory; promotion needs 35% in four subjects including English and 75% attendance | Subjects cannot change after 15 September of Class XI |
| CBSE | Physics, chemistry and biology 70 theory + 30 practical; maths, accountancy, economics and business studies 80 + 20 | Mathematics or Applied Mathematics, not both |
| IB Diploma | Six subject groups, three or four at higher level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the extended essay and CAS | Higher or standard level for each subject, and Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation in maths |
The city hub notes that ICSE and ISC have a long following in Kolkata, so it is worth asking for an ISC specialist by name. See our ICSE and ISC, CBSE and IB pages for Kolkata, and the national ISC maths tutor page.
All the major science entrance tests examine the Class 11 syllabus as well as Class 12, so this year is half of the preparation, not a warm-up.
The board exam and the entrance tests overlap but are not the same. A Higher Secondary student, for instance, faces MCQs in Semester I but full written answers in Semester II, while JEE Main and NEET are objective throughout. A good tutor plans both from the same chapters rather than running two separate courses.
Some students change board at this point, from ICSE to the Higher Secondary course, from Madhyamik to CBSE, and so on. Each move has a known weak spot. Students arriving on the Higher Secondary course from CBSE or ICSE must adapt to MCQ semesters and to working without a calculator. Students moving to ISC from the state board meet a heavier English requirement. A first-month tutor task is to compare the old and new syllabus and fill the assumed topics.
| Zone | Typical route | Slot advice |
|---|---|---|
| Tollygunge, Jadavpur & Garia | Jadavpur station, or Blue Line plus an auto | Avoid college hours at the 8B crossing |
| Ballygunge, Gariahat & Alipore | Netaji Bhavan or Jatin Das Park for Bhowanipore | Weekday evening office traffic; weekend mornings work |
| Lake Town, Dum Dum & Baguiati | Blue Line to Belgachia or Green Line to Salt Lake, then a bus along VIP Road | Earlier or weekend slots in Baguiati |
| New Town & Rajarhat | Green Line to Salt Lake Sector V, then bus or auto | A tutor living in New Town suits late slots |
| Howrah | Santragachi Junction, or the Kona Expressway from Kolkata | Weekday evenings need a margin on the expressway |
| North Kolkata | Dum Dum station, then an auto from Sinthee More | BT Road is heavy at office hours |
Class 11 is where online tuition earns its place. A student with school and coaching has little time to spare, and the specialist for ISC physics or IB maths may live far away. A strong pattern is a home tutor for the hardest subject and online sessions for the others, with the tutor seeing written working live. Home tuition remains the better choice for a student who needs someone to keep the week on track.

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. For Class 11, the subject, board, entrance-test depth, the tutor's experience and the journey matter most. Each shortlisted fee is visible before the demo. See home tuition fees in Kolkata and the pricing guide.
Jadavpur has its own station on the Sealdah South lines, with Blue and Orange Line stops an auto ride away. In Bhowanipore, three Blue Line stations make the metro and a short walk a practical way in from Tollygunge, Garia or the north. Baguiati has no metro station yet, and addresses spread across several sub-localities off VIP Road, so share an exact landmark.
In New Town Action Area I, complexes register visitors at the gate, while plotted houses are a simple doorstep visit. Santragachi along the Kona Expressway is mostly gated complexes; send the tower and flat number in advance. In Sinthee, buses on BT Road and Dum Dum station bring tutors close to most flats.

On the WBCHSE Higher Secondary course, Kolkata Class 11 students sit two school-conducted semester examinations. Semester I is multiple-choice, and Semester II uses conventional written answers, with projects and practicals done before it. Take the current pattern and schedule from wbchse.wb.gov.in and the school, not from older notes.
No, a Kolkata Higher Secondary student cannot use a calculator in any examination under the council's semester system, its examination FAQ says, naming accountancy and other commerce subjects too. A tutor should make hand calculation, approximation and neat working part of every numerical session from the first week of Class 11.
A Kolkata student must pass both Class 11 Higher Secondary semesters separately, in theory and in project or practical, to be promoted to Semester III. The council's FAQ allows only limited relief under its Rule 9/2 or interchange facility. Ask the school how this applies, and plan tuition so no subject drifts.
A Kolkata science student in Class 11 should usually plan for JEE Main and NEET (UG), both by NTA, and WBJEE, run by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board. All three draw on Class 11 as well as Class 12 chapters. A tutor plans board and entrance work from the same chapters.
A Kolkata ISC student cannot change subjects after 15 September of the Class XI year under CISCE regulations. ISC students take English plus three to five electives, at most six subjects, and promotion needs 35% in four subjects including English with 75% attendance. Settle the combination before tuition plans are fixed.
In Kolkata, Class 11 science-with-maths students most often need a tutor for maths and physics, and science-with-biology students for chemistry and physics. Commerce students need accountancy above all, then economics. Humanities students usually need one subject at a time, such as economics or English answer writing.
A Kolkata Class 11 student should add a home tutor to coaching only for a clear reason, such as a subject coaching rushes or board-specific writing it skips. Write out the full week first, because self-study needs time. A tutor who works on the same chapters as that week's coaching adds most.
Online tuition often suits a Kolkata Class 11 student, because school and coaching leave little time and the ISC physics or IB maths specialist may live far away. A strong pattern is a home tutor for the hardest subject and online sessions for the rest. Home tuition remains better for a student who needs keeping on track.
