Maths home tutor for Class 11: CBSE, ISC and a JEE-ready foundation

Class 11 maths is the biggest single jump in a student's school career. It is common for students who did well in Class 10 to see their marks drop sharply in the first Class 11 tests, and many families only realise how steep the climb is after the half-yearly. The reason is simple: Class 11 introduces a new kind of mathematics, built on functions, abstraction and long chains of reasoning, and it does so at speed. This guide covers the CBSE Class 11 maths syllabus and marks for 2026-27, what ISC students study, why the jump from Class 10 is so hard, how Class 11 underpins JEE, and how a maths home tutor should spend the year.

Why the jump from Class 10 to Class 11 maths is so hard

Class 10 maths is largely a set of separate techniques: solve this quadratic, find this height, calculate this volume. Class 11 asks students to think in structures. A function is no longer a formula but a rule between sets, with a domain and a range. Trigonometry stops being about triangles and becomes about the unit circle and graphs. Calculus appears, with limits that cannot be computed by substitution alone.

Four things make the transition particularly hard:

Volume

The Class 11 chapter count looks similar to Class 10, but each chapter is far denser. Schools that also prepare students for entrance exams move even faster.

Abstraction

Sets, relations, functions and complex numbers are ideas without a picture to lean on. Students who learned by pattern-matching worked examples feel lost.

Algebra load

Trigonometric identities, binomial expansions and conic equations all demand fast, accurate algebra. Any Class 9 or 10 weakness in factorisation shows up immediately.

Divided attention

Physics and chemistry get harder in the same year, and many students start entrance preparation too. Maths often gets squeezed.

The good news is that Class 11 rewards steady one-to-one work more than almost any other year. The concepts are new for everyone, so a student who understands each chapter properly as it arrives can move from struggling to comfortable within a term. What does not work is waiting until Class 12 to catch up: too much of Class 12 is built directly on Class 11.

CBSE Class 11 maths 2026-27: units, chapters and marks

CBSE Class 11 Mathematics (code 041) is assessed through an 80-mark, three-hour theory paper set by the school, plus 20 marks of internal assessment. The 2026-27 curriculum divides the theory marks across five units:

UnitChaptersMarks
Sets and FunctionsSets; Relations and Functions; Trigonometric Functions23
AlgebraComplex Numbers and Quadratic Equations; Linear Inequalities; Permutations and Combinations; Binomial Theorem; Sequence and Series25
Coordinate GeometryStraight Lines; Conic Sections; Introduction to Three-dimensional Geometry12
CalculusLimits and Derivatives8
Statistics and ProbabilityStatistics; Probability12
Theory total80
Internal assessmentPeriodic tests (best 2 of 3) 10; mathematics activities 1020

Sets and Functions and Algebra together carry 48 marks, well over half the paper, and they are also the units that Class 12 and JEE lean on most. Calculus carries only 8 marks in Class 11, but that number badly understates its importance: Class 12 calculus is worth 35 marks on the board paper, and it all starts here.

What each unit really asks of a student:

  • Sets, Relations and Functions. Notation, intervals, Venn diagrams, Cartesian products, and the standard real functions with their graphs: modulus, signum, greatest integer, exponential, logarithmic. Graph sketching is the skill to build.
  • Trigonometric Functions. Radians, the unit-circle definition, graphs, compound-angle formulae, and identities for 2x and 3x. The longest and most practice-hungry chapter of the year.
  • Complex Numbers and Quadratics. Why i is needed, algebra of complex numbers and the Argand plane.
  • Permutations and Combinations; Binomial Theorem. Counting principles, nPr and nCr, and the binomial expansion with Pascal's triangle. Counting problems reward careful reading more than formulae.
  • Sequence and Series. GPs, infinite GPs, arithmetic and geometric means and the AM-GM relation.
  • Straight Lines and Conic Sections. Slope, forms of the equation of a line, distance of a point from a line; standard equations and properties of the circle, parabola, ellipse and hyperbola.
  • Limits and Derivatives. The intuitive idea of a limit, standard limits including trigonometric ones, the derivative from first principles, and rules for sums, products and quotients.
  • Statistics and Probability. Mean deviation, variance and standard deviation; axiomatic probability with "and", "or" and "not" events.

How the Class 11 paper is set

The 2026-27 curriculum gives the following design for the Class 11 paper:

Type of questionMarksShare
Remembering and understanding4455%
Applying2025%
Analysing, evaluating and creating1620%

There is no overall choice, but about a third of questions carry an internal choice. CBSE also notes that there is no chapter-wise weightage and that every chapter must be covered, so skipping a chapter is a real risk. The mathematics activities for internal assessment are ten activities from the NCERT lab manual, marked for the record, a year-end activity test and a viva; these are straightforward marks a tutor can help the student secure.

Topics taught but not examined in the CBSE paper

CBSE's 2026-27 curriculum lists a set of Class 11 topics that are to be assessed only formatively, meaning they are taught and practised but do not add to the year-end summative assessment. They include composition of functions, general solutions of trigonometric equations, mathematical induction, polar form of complex numbers, graphical solution of linear inequalities in two variables, general and middle terms of a binomial expansion, sums of n, n² and n³, the normal and general forms of a line, the section formula in 3D, the chain rule, and sample spaces for random experiments.

For a student who only needs the school exam, these can be treated lightly. For a student preparing for JEE, many of them matter a great deal: general solutions, induction-style reasoning, binomial general terms and the chain rule all appear in entrance problems. A good tutor will ask about the student's goals before deciding how much time these get.

ISC Class 11 maths

ISC Mathematics in Class 11 follows the CISCE syllabus and is examined by the school: a theory paper of 80 marks and project work of 20 marks. The theory is organised into a compulsory core section and further sections from which the student attempts one, an arrangement that continues into Class 12. The broad areas are the same as CBSE, namely sets and functions (including trigonometry), algebra, coordinate geometry, calculus, and statistics and probability, though the depth and ordering differ and ISC papers are known for long, multi-part questions.

Two practical points for ISC families. First, ISC expects fully worked solutions, so the same habits of presentation that matter in Class 12 should be built now. Second, the project work is a real 20 marks; a tutor can help plan it early rather than in the last fortnight. Check the current CISCE regulations for the exact section marks for your year. Class 11 as the foundation for JEE

A large share of the JEE maths syllabus is Class 11 material, and the Class 11 chapters are also the base for the Class 12 chapters that make up the rest. A student aiming for JEE Main or Advanced cannot afford a weak Class 11. These are the chapters that matter most, and why:

Class 11 chapterWhy it matters for JEE and Class 12
Sets, Relations and FunctionsDomain, range and graphs underpin Class 12 relations, inverse trigonometry and all of calculus
Trigonometric FunctionsIdentities and graphs appear throughout calculus, complex numbers and coordinate geometry
Sequence and SeriesAM-GM and series sums are frequent in JEE, often combined with other topics
Limits and DerivativesThe start of calculus: continuity, differentiability and integration build directly on it
Conic Sections and Straight LinesCoordinate geometry is a large block of JEE maths and needs heavy, patient practice
Permutations and Combinations; Binomial TheoremCounting logic feeds probability; binomial questions are a JEE staple
ProbabilityClass 12 conditional probability and Bayes' theorem assume Class 11 is secure
Complex NumbersArgand-plane and algebraic questions are common in entrance papers

A tutor helping with JEE in Class 11 should do two things at once: secure the NCERT-level understanding the school exam needs, and then raise the problem difficulty chapter by chapter. The worst pattern is jumping to hard entrance problems before the basics are firm. Our topic-wise JEE maths preparation guide sets out the approach in more detail. Most JEE aspirants need help in physics too; see our Class 11 physics tutors and JEE physics tutors.

IB and A-level students in the equivalent year

Students in international schools meet similar mathematics under different names. In the IB Diploma Programme, the first year of Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, at SL or HL, covers functions, sequences, trigonometry, early calculus and statistics, and students begin thinking about the internal assessment exploration. A-level students start pure mathematics with algebra, functions, coordinate geometry and calculus, plus statistics or mechanics. The content overlaps heavily with CBSE Class 11, but the exam styles are different, so a tutor should know the specific course. See our IB maths tutors in Gurgaon and the guide to IB Maths AA and AI at SL and HL.

A plan for the Class 11 year

Schools order the chapters differently, so the tutor should follow the school timetable. This is a typical shape for a CBSE student who starts in April:

  • April and May. Sets, relations and functions. Spend real time on graphs of standard functions; they pay back all year. Quick check of Class 10 algebra and trigonometry.
  • June. Trigonometric functions, with identities practised every session until they are fluent. Summer break is the time to get ahead here.
  • July. Complex numbers, linear inequalities, permutations and combinations. First periodic test in many schools.
  • August. Binomial theorem, sequence and series.
  • September. Straight lines, then half-yearly exams. Review the paper chapter by chapter.
  • October and November. Conic sections and 3D geometry, then limits and derivatives. Keep calculus unhurried; it is Class 12's backbone.
  • December. Statistics and probability. Complete the lab-manual activities for internal assessment.
  • January and February. Mixed revision and full timed papers. Identify the two weakest chapters and rebuild them.
  • March. Year-end exams, then a short, targeted review before Class 12 begins, especially functions, trigonometry and derivatives.

JEE students will run a parallel track of harder problems from the same chapters. A student who joins a tutor mid-year should begin with functions and trigonometry, even if the school has moved on, because nearly every later chapter depends on them.

Where Class 11 students lose marks

  • Ignoring domains. Cancelling terms or taking logarithms without checking where the function is defined.
  • Degrees and radians. Mixing the two, especially in limits and graphs.
  • Memorising identities without deriving them. Students who can derive the compound-angle and double-angle formulae forget far fewer of them under exam pressure.
  • Overcounting and undercounting. Using permutations where order does not matter, or double-counting cases.
  • Limits by substitution alone. Plugging in values and writing 0/0 as the answer instead of simplifying first.
  • Conic confusion. Muddling the standard forms and properties of the ellipse and hyperbola. A comparison table the student writes themselves helps.
  • Skipped steps. School examiners mark method. A correct final answer with missing working often scores less than a small slip with full working.
  • Leaving Class 11 gaps for Class 12. They do not close by themselves; they widen.

Choosing a Class 11 maths tutor

Class 11 needs a tutor who is comfortable with senior-secondary mathematics, not just Class 10 methods. In the free demo class, check:

  • Depth. Ask the tutor to explain why a limit like sin x / x tends to 1, or what a function's domain really means. Clear explanation of the idea matters more than speed with the answer.
  • Goal awareness. The tutor should ask whether the student is aiming only for the school exam, for CUET, or for JEE, and plan accordingly.
  • Board fluency. For ISC students, experience with ISC papers; for IB or A-level students, experience with that specific course.
  • Continuity. A tutor who can continue into Class 12 saves the student months of adjusting to a new teacher.

Our main maths home tutor guide has a full checklist. For the year ahead, see the Class 12 maths tutor page; students still settling gaps from the board year may find the Class 10 maths page useful. If stream choice is still being discussed, our guide on choosing a board and stream may help.

Fees, frequency and home or online

Across NXTutors, most sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour. For Class 11 maths the fee depends mainly on the tutor's experience with senior-secondary and entrance-level maths, home or online sessions, travel in your area and the number of sessions each week. You see each shortlisted tutor's fee before the demo; our pricing guide has more detail.

Two or three sessions a week suits most Class 11 students; JEE aspirants often need three. Maths Home Tutor for Class 11: common questions

What are the fees for a Class 11 maths home tutor?

Across NXTutors, most sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour. For Class 11 maths the fee depends mainly on the tutor's experience with senior-secondary and entrance-level maths, home or online sessions, travel in your area and the number of sessions each week. You see each tutor's fee before the free demo class.

How do I find maths tuition near me for Class 11?

Tell NXTutors your board (CBSE, ISC, IB or A-level), your area, preferred timings, budget and whether JEE is a goal. We shortlist two or three Class 11 maths tutors who fit, and you choose one for a free demo class. Online sessions widen the choice if no specialist is nearby.

Why is Class 11 maths so much harder than Class 10?

Class 11 introduces functions, trigonometric functions on the unit circle, complex numbers, conic sections and calculus, all at speed and with heavier algebra. Students who relied on memorising worked examples in Class 10 often struggle. Steady one-to-one work as each chapter arrives usually closes the gap within a term.

Can a Class 11 maths tutor also prepare my child for JEE?

Yes. Tell us JEE is a goal when you share your requirement and we will shortlist tutors with entrance-level experience. A good tutor secures the school syllabus first and then raises problem difficulty chapter by chapter, with extra attention to functions, trigonometry, sequences, limits and derivatives, conic sections, permutations and probability.

Is online maths tuition good for Class 11?

Online sessions work very well for Class 11 maths when the tutor uses a writing tablet or can see the student's notebook. They give access to specialist tutors for CBSE, ISC, IB or JEE maths without travel. Many families combine online sessions with a weekly home session.

How many maths sessions a week does a Class 11 student need?

Two or three sessions a week suits most Class 11 students. JEE aspirants usually need three, because they are working at two levels at once: the school syllabus and harder entrance problems on the same chapters.

Can I get a female maths tutor for Class 11?

We can shortlist female tutors where available; tell us when you share your requirement.

Is there a free demo class for Class 11 maths?

Yes. The demo class is free and covers your child's current chapter, so you can judge the tutor's depth and clarity. If the match is not right, we arrange another tutor, and switching later in the year is also free.
