Maths home tutor for Class 12: board marks, calculus and revision for 2026-27

Class 12 maths carries more weight than any other school maths result. It counts for college admission, it sits in the same months as JEE and CUET preparation, and for many students it is the last time they will study the subject formally. It is also a year with a very clear shape: calculus dominates the paper, the question pattern is published in advance, and the marks go to students who set out their working the way examiners expect. This guide covers the CBSE Class 12 maths weightage and paper design for 2026-27, the ISC paper, how to balance boards with entrance exams, a month-by-month plan, and how a Class 12 maths home tutor should run revision.

CBSE Class 12 maths 2026-27: unit weightage

CBSE Class 12 Mathematics (code 041) is one three-hour board paper of 80 marks, plus 20 marks of internal assessment. The 2026-27 curriculum spreads the theory marks across six units:

UnitChaptersMarks
Relations and FunctionsRelations and Functions; Inverse Trigonometric Functions8
AlgebraMatrices; Determinants10
CalculusContinuity and Differentiability; Applications of Derivatives; Integrals; Applications of the Integrals; Differential Equations35
Vectors and Three-dimensional GeometryVectors; Three-dimensional Geometry14
Linear ProgrammingLinear Programming5
ProbabilityProbability8
Theory total80
Internal assessmentPeriodic tests (best 2 of 3) 10; mathematics activities 1020

The message of this table is hard to miss. Calculus alone is 35 of the 80 marks, more than 40% of the paper. Vectors and 3D geometry add 14, so these two units together account for almost two-thirds of the paper. Relations and Functions, Algebra, Linear Programming and Probability make up the remaining 31 marks, and they are generally the quicker chapters to secure. CBSE also notes that there is no chapter-wise weightage within units and that all chapters must be covered.

How the 2026-27 question paper is built

CBSE's 2026-27 sample question paper for Class 12 maths has 38 compulsory questions in five sections:

SectionQuestionsTypeMarks
A1 to 2018 multiple-choice questions and 2 assertion-reason questions, 1 mark each20
B21 to 25Very short answer, 2 marks each10
C26 to 31Short answer, 3 marks each18
D32 to 35Long answer, 5 marks each20
E36 to 38Case-study questions, 4 marks each12

There is no overall choice, but internal choices are given in two questions of Section B, three of Section C, two of Section D and one sub-part in two of the case studies. By type of thinking, the curriculum allots 44 marks (55%) to remembering and understanding, 20 marks (25%) to applying, and 16 marks (20%) to analysing, evaluating and creating.

Two practical points follow. First, Section A is a fifth of the paper and rewards speed and accuracy on short questions, so students should practise MCQs and assertion-reason items in timed sets, not only long answers. Second, the long answers in Section D are where full working matters most; a tutor should mark these the way a board examiner would.

Calculus: the core of Class 12 maths

Five chapters, 35 marks, and the foundation of JEE and most university maths. A Class 12 tutor should treat calculus as the backbone of the year and give it time accordingly.

Continuity and Differentiability

Continuity at a point, the chain rule, derivatives of inverse trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic functions, implicit and parametric differentiation, logarithmic differentiation, and second derivatives. Speed here makes the rest of calculus easier.

Applications of Derivatives

Rates of change, increasing and decreasing functions, and maxima and minima with first and second derivative tests. Maxima-minima word problems are a regular long-answer question, and forming the function is the hard part.

Integrals

Integration by substitution, partial fractions and parts, the standard integral forms, and definite integrals with their properties. This is the chapter that most rewards daily practice; recognising which method to use comes only from volume.

Applications of the Integrals

Areas under simple curves: lines, circles, parabolas and ellipses in standard form. A neat sketch with the region shaded is half the answer.

Differential Equations

Order and degree, general and particular solutions, variables separable, homogeneous equations and linear first-order equations. Largely procedural once integration is secure.

Calculus in Class 12 assumes Class 11 functions, trigonometry and limits are firm. If they are not, a tutor should spend the first few sessions rebuilding them rather than pushing ahead; it saves time within weeks. Our guide to CBSE Class 12 calculus and algebra goes deeper into each chapter, and students who need to revisit the basics can look at our Class 11 maths tutoring page.

The other units: quick marks, if prepared

  • Relations and Functions (8 marks). Reflexive, symmetric, transitive and equivalence relations; one-one and onto functions; inverse trigonometric functions with principal values and graphs. Proofs of equivalence must check all three properties explicitly.
  • Matrices and Determinants (10 marks). Matrix operations, transpose, symmetric and skew-symmetric matrices, determinants up to 3 × 3, adjoint and inverse, and solving a system of equations by the matrix method. Arithmetic slips in a 3 × 3 inverse are the usual loss.
  • Vectors and 3D Geometry (14 marks). Direction cosines and ratios, dot and cross products, vector and Cartesian equations of a line, angle between lines, skew lines and shortest distance. Students should be comfortable moving between vector and Cartesian forms.
  • Linear Programming (5 marks). Forming constraints, drawing the feasible region and testing corner points, with up to three non-trivial constraints. Accurate graphing earns these marks.
  • Probability (8 marks). Conditional probability, the multiplication theorem, independent events, total probability and Bayes' theorem. Defining events clearly before calculating avoids most errors.

ISC Class 12 maths

ISC Mathematics (860) in Class 12 has a three-hour theory paper of 80 marks and project work of 20 marks. Until the 2026 exam the paper had a compulsory Section A and a choice of Section B or Section C. From the 2027 exam, CISCE's syllabus drops that choice: every student takes the same seven units, with theory marks as follows:

UnitMarks
Relations and Functions10
Algebra10
Calculus35
Vector Algebra5
Three-dimensional Geometry6
Linear Programming5
Probability9
Theory total80
Project work (two projects)20

Calculus is again the centre of the paper, and the unit list is now close to CBSE's. Linear regression and the commerce applications of calculus have moved to ISC Applied Mathematics, a separate subject. ISC examiners expect complete working and clear diagrams. Check the CISCE syllabus and specimen paper for your exam year before relying on these numbers; our ISC maths tutor guide covers the paper in full, and Gurugram families can also see our ICSE and ISC maths tutors in Gurgaon.

Balancing boards with JEE and CUET

Most Class 12 science students are preparing for more than one exam. The good news is that the overlap is large: the board syllabus is the core of JEE Main's Class 12 maths and of the CUET maths domain test. The challenge is that each exam rewards a different skill.

ExamWhat it rewardsHow to prepare
CBSE or ISC boardComplete, well-presented working; NCERT-level understanding; covering every chapterNCERT and exemplar problems, sample papers, full written answers marked for steps
JEE Main and AdvancedSpeed, depth, combining ideas from several chaptersHarder problem sets built on the same chapters, timed practice, Class 11 revision
CUETQuick, accurate objective answers across the syllabusTimed MCQ practice once the board syllabus is covered; check the current NTA syllabus

A sensible rule: until November, prepare concepts at a level that serves both board and entrance; from December to the board exam, the board paper takes priority, because it is close and specific; after the boards, switch fully to entrance mode. A tutor who knows the student's targets can plan this rather than leaving the student to juggle it. See our JEE maths topic-wise preparation guide, and for the physics side, our Class 12 physics tutors.

A month-by-month plan for Class 12 maths

Board exams usually start in February. Schools vary in their chapter order, so this plan is a shape to adapt, not a fixed schedule:

MonthFocus
AprilRelations and functions, inverse trigonometric functions; quick revision of Class 11 functions, trigonometry and limits
May and JuneMatrices, determinants, then continuity and differentiability. Summer is the best time to get ahead in calculus.
JulyApplications of derivatives. First periodic test in many schools.
AugustIntegrals, with daily mixed practice of methods
SeptemberApplications of integrals and differential equations; half-yearly exams
OctoberVectors and 3D geometry
NovemberLinear programming and probability; syllabus complete. Lab-manual activities finished for internal assessment.
DecemberPre-boards in many schools. Full papers weekly; calculus revision every session.
JanuarySample papers and previous years' papers under timed conditions; each paper reviewed question by question
February and MarchBoard exam. Short targeted sessions, a formula sheet written by the student, no new material

A student starting in October or November can still do well. The tutor will prioritise calculus and vectors by marks, use sample papers early to find the gaps, and add sessions for the final months.

Presenting derivations and steps for full marks

Class 12 maths is marked step by step. Two students with the same final answer can score very differently. The habits a tutor should drill:

  • State the method. "Using integration by parts" or "applying the second derivative test" tells the examiner what you are doing and often earns a method mark.
  • Write the formula before substituting. In integrals, 3D distance and probability questions, the formula line is usually worth something even if a later step slips.
  • Show the key intermediate steps. For a matrix inverse, write the determinant, the cofactors and the adjoint separately.
  • Justify maxima and minima. Show the sign of the second derivative (or the first derivative change) and conclude explicitly.
  • Draw and shade. Area questions and linear programming need a labelled graph with the region clearly marked.
  • Add the constant. Indefinite integrals need + C, and a particular solution needs the condition applied.
  • End with a statement. In applied questions, a final sentence answering the question, with units where relevant.

Class 12 maths revision that works

Revision in Class 12 is not re-reading. What helps most:

  • Mixed sets, not chapter sets. In the board paper, questions do not announce their chapter. From November, practise mixed sets.
  • An error log. Every wrong answer goes into a notebook with the reason. Reviewing the log before each paper prevents repeats.
  • Timed full papers. One a week from December, reviewed the next session. Timing Section A separately is useful.
  • Integration drills. Short daily sets of integrals keep the most practice-hungry chapter fresh.
  • Formula sheet in the student's own hand. Writing it is part of learning it.

Chapter traps that cost Class 12 marks

Beyond presentation, each high-weight chapter has its own favourite errors. A tutor who knows them can fix them before the pre-boards:

  • Inverse trigonometric functions. Ignoring principal value ranges, so that sin⁻¹(sin x) is simplified to x when x lies outside the principal branch.
  • Continuity. Checking only the left-hand limit, or forgetting to compare both limits with the value of the function at the point.
  • Maxima and minima. Differentiating the wrong quantity because the function was never written in one variable; always express the quantity to be optimised first.
  • Integration by parts. Choosing the wrong first function, which makes the second integral harder than the first.
  • Definite integrals. Changing the variable by substitution but not changing the limits.
  • Area under curves. Integrating across a point where the curve crosses the axis and letting positive and negative areas cancel.
  • Differential equations. Missing the integrating factor's sign, or not rewriting the equation in standard form first.
  • 3D geometry. Using direction ratios where the formula needs direction cosines, or mixing up the formula for shortest distance between skew and parallel lines.
  • Bayes' theorem. Not defining the events in words before writing probabilities, which leads to swapped conditional probabilities.

Choosing a Class 12 maths tutor

The free demo class is the best chance to judge a Class 12 tutor. Look for these things:

Current paper knowledge

The tutor should know the 2026-27 design: five sections, 38 questions, internal choices and three case studies, and how many marks calculus carries.

Examiner-style marking

Ask the tutor to mark a long answer your child has written. A good tutor points to the exact step where marks would be lost.

A plan for your goals

Boards only, boards with CUET, or boards with JEE need different plans. The tutor should ask, and the plan should reflect the answer.

Continuity

A tutor who taught the student in Class 11 already knows the gaps, which saves time, but only if Class 11 went well.

For international-curriculum students, look for specific IB or A-level experience; see our IB maths tutors in Gurgaon and the IB Maths AA and AI guide. Our main maths home tutor guide has a full checklist.

Fees, frequency and home or online

Across NXTutors, most sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour. Where a Class 12 maths tutor sits in that range depends on board and entrance experience, home or online sessions, travel in your area and how many sessions a week you book. You see each tutor's fee before the demo; our pricing guide explains the factors.

Two or three sessions a week suits most Class 12 students, rising to three or four in the final months for those catching up or preparing for entrance exams too. Online sessions work well when the tutor can see every line of working; home sessions suit students who need close supervision. In Gurugram, see our maths home tutors in Gurgaon.

What are the fees for a Class 12 maths home tutor?

Across NXTutors, most sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour. For Class 12 maths the fee depends on the tutor's board and entrance-exam experience, home or online sessions, travel in your area and how many sessions you book each week. You see each shortlisted tutor's fee before the free demo class.

How do I find Class 12 maths tuition near me?

Share your board, area, preferred timings, budget and whether JEE or CUET is also a goal with NXTutors. We shortlist two or three Class 12 maths tutors who fit, and you choose one for a free demo class. If no suitable tutor is nearby, online sessions with an experienced Class 12 tutor work well.

Which chapters carry the most marks in CBSE Class 12 maths?

In the CBSE 2026-27 curriculum, Calculus carries 35 of the 80 theory marks and Vectors and Three-dimensional Geometry carry 14. Algebra carries 10, Relations and Functions and Probability 8 each, and Linear Programming 5. A further 20 marks come from internal assessment.

Is it too late to start Class 12 maths revision with a tutor in November or December?

No. A tutor starting late will prioritise the highest-mark units, calculus and vectors, use sample papers early to find gaps, and fix presentation habits that lose step marks. More sessions a week are usually needed in the final months.

Can one tutor help with both the Class 12 board exam and JEE or CUET?

Yes. The board syllabus is the core of Class 12 maths for JEE Main and the CUET maths test. Tell us all the exams your child is taking and we will shortlist tutors who can plan for both, usually building concepts for both until November and putting the board paper first from December.

Is online tuition good enough for Class 12 maths?

Yes, provided the tutor can see every line of working through a writing tablet or a camera on the notebook, because board marks are awarded for steps. Online tuition widens the choice of experienced Class 12 tutors and saves travel time during a busy year.

Can I get a female maths tutor for Class 12?

We can shortlist female tutors where available; tell us when you share your requirement.

Is there a free demo class, and can we switch tutors?

Yes. The demo class is free and is a normal lesson on your child's current chapter. If the tutor is not right, at the demo or later in the year, switching to another matched tutor is free.
