Class 11 physics is where many students who found Class 10 science easy suddenly start losing marks. The subject stands on its own for the first time, the mathematics becomes real, and the pace is fast. It is also the year that quietly decides JEE and NEET: roughly half of the physics syllabus for both exams is built on Class 11 chapters. This guide sets out the CBSE Class 11 physics syllabus and marks for 2026-27, explains exactly what makes the jump from Class 10 so hard, and gives a realistic plan a home tutor can follow from April to the annual exam.
In Class 10, physics was two or three chapters inside a science paper: light, electricity and magnetic effects of current. Most questions could be answered with one formula and a careful diagram. In Class 11 the student faces fourteen physics chapters in one year, and almost every one of them assumes the student can handle vectors, graphs and a little calculus.
Three changes cause most of the trouble:
The Class 11 exam is set by the school rather than by CBSE, which leads some families to treat the year lightly. That is a mistake. Class 12 builds directly on it, and JEE and NEET test it in full.
The theory paper is 70 marks and three hours, with a further 30 marks for practicals. The 2026-27 curriculum groups the ten units into four blocks for marks:
| Units | NCERT chapters | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| I Physical World and Measurement; II Kinematics; III Laws of Motion | 1 Units and Measurements; 2 Motion in a Straight Line; 3 Motion in a Plane; 4 Laws of Motion | 23 |
| IV Work, Energy and Power; V Motion of System of Particles and Rigid Body; VI Gravitation | 5 Work, Energy and Power; 6 System of Particles and Rotational Motion; 7 Gravitation | 17 |
| VII Properties of Bulk Matter; VIII Thermodynamics; IX Kinetic Theory of Gases | 8 Mechanical Properties of Solids; 9 Mechanical Properties of Fluids; 10 Thermal Properties of Matter; 11 Thermodynamics; 12 Kinetic Theory | 20 |
| X Oscillations and Waves | 13 Oscillations; 14 Waves | 10 |
| Theory total | 70 | |
| Practicals | Experiments, activities, record, project and viva | 30 |
Mechanics (the first two blocks, chapters 1 to 7) carries 40 of the 70 theory marks. It is also the part of the course that everything else leans on: oscillations use Newton's laws and energy, fluids use pressure and force, and kinetic theory uses momentum. A tutor who makes mechanics secure has done most of the year's work.
The curriculum also notes that content marked in NCERT textbooks as excluded for 2026-27 is not to be tested, so the tutor should work from the current NCERT edition rather than an old guidebook.
If there is one thing a Class 11 physics tutor should check in the first week, it is the student's comfort with the mathematical tools. The table shows what physics needs and when.
| Tool | Where physics first needs it | What the student must be able to do |
|---|---|---|
| Differentiation | Motion in a Straight Line | Find velocity from position and acceleration from velocity; read a derivative as a slope. |
| Integration | Motion in a Straight Line; work by a variable force | Read an integral as the area under a graph; integrate simple powers. |
| Vectors | Motion in a Plane onward | Resolve into components, add and subtract, use unit vectors, take dot and cross products. |
| Trigonometry | Projectiles, inclined planes, banking | Use sine and cosine of standard angles quickly; small-angle approximations for the pendulum. |
| Graphs | Every unit | Interpret slope, intercept and area; sketch a curve from an equation. |
A good tutor teaches just enough calculus for the physics, framed physically ("the slope of the position–time graph is the velocity"), and does not wait for the maths syllabus to catch up. Where the gaps are wider, working alongside a Class 11 maths tutor is often the fastest fix, because the two subjects reinforce each other all year.
CBSE gives the same question-paper typology for Classes 11 and 12. Schools setting the Class 11 annual exam are expected to follow it:
| Type of question | Marks | Approximate share |
|---|---|---|
| Remembering and understanding | 27 | 38% |
| Applying | 22 | 32% |
| Analysing, evaluating and creating | 21 | 30% |
In other words, more than 60% of the marks ask the student to use physics in a situation they have not seen word for word. Reading NCERT and memorising derivations is necessary but not enough. The tutor's job is to add a steady diet of unfamiliar problems: NCERT exercises and additional exercises first, then NCERT Exemplar, then mixed questions that cross chapters.
Students are expected to record at least eight experiments (four from each section) and six activities (three from each section), and to carry out an investigatory project. The practical exam is marked like this:
| Component | Marks |
|---|---|
| Two experiments, one from each section | 7 + 7 |
| Practical record (experiments and activities) | 5 |
| One activity from either section | 3 |
| Investigatory project | 3 |
| Viva on experiments, activities and project | 5 |
| Total | 30 |
Section A experiments centre on measurement and mechanics: vernier callipers, screw gauge, spherometer, the simple pendulum and friction. Section B covers properties of matter, heat and sound: Young's modulus, the force constant of a spring, surface tension by capillary rise, viscosity by terminal velocity, cooling curves, the sonometer and the resonance tube. A home tutor cannot replace the school lab, but can make sure the student understands the theory behind each experiment, can take readings with the correct least count, handles significant figures, and is ready for viva questions. Many of these same experiments appear in the Experimental Skills unit of the JEE Main and NEET syllabi.
Both the JEE Main physics syllabus and the NEET UG physics syllabus list twenty units. The first ten, from units and measurement to oscillations and waves, map onto Class 11. Units 11 to 19 cover Class 12, and unit 20 is experimental skills. So roughly half of the entrance syllabus is this year's work.
For a student in coaching, Class 11 is where most fall behind: lectures move on, modules pile up, and school exams pull in a different direction. A home tutor's role here is usually to:
If the aim is clear, read our guides for a JEE physics tutor or a NEET physics tutor, and our topic-wise JEE physics preparation guide.
School timetables differ, but most follow the NCERT chapter order. This is the kind of plan a tutor might follow with a student who starts in April.
| Months | Physics | Tutor's priority |
|---|---|---|
| April | Units and Measurements; Motion in a Straight Line | Diagnose Class 10 gaps; teach differentiation and integration as slopes and areas. |
| May–June | Motion in a Plane; Laws of Motion | Use the summer break to make vectors and free-body diagrams automatic. |
| July | Work, Energy and Power | Energy methods versus force methods; collisions. |
| August | System of Particles and Rotational Motion | The linear–rotational analogy; torque and angular momentum problems. |
| September | Gravitation; mid-term revision | Review the mid-term paper question by question. |
| October | Mechanical Properties of Solids and Fluids | Link to practicals: Young's modulus, viscosity, surface tension. |
| November | Thermal Properties; Thermodynamics; Kinetic Theory | Sign conventions; P–V graphs; process problems. |
| December | Oscillations; Waves | SHM equations and energy; standing waves and harmonics. |
| January–February | Revision and practicals | Full papers under time; practical file and viva preparation; mechanics revisited. |
A student starting later should not try to cover everything evenly. The tutor should secure the chapter the class is on now, then rebuild vectors and Newton's laws in parallel, because so much depends on them.
Class 11 marks are rarely lost because a topic is beyond the student. They are lost to habits a tutor can spot in the first few sessions and correct over a term:
Ask the tutor to explain, in the demo, how they would introduce calculus in kinematics. You want a clear, physical answer, not a formula list.
Boards only, NEET or JEE each change how Class 11 is taught. The tutor should ask which, and adjust the problem level.
Free-body diagrams, vector triangles and graphs should appear in every session. A tutor who solves everything on their own page is not teaching.
Short chapter tests every two or three weeks, marked and reviewed, and a clear note to parents on weak areas.
Our main physics home tutor guide has a fuller demo-class checklist. Students taking PCM or PCB usually find chemistry makes a similar jump this year; see our Class 11 chemistry tutor page.
Across NXTutors, most sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour. For Class 11 physics the fee depends on the tutor's experience, whether the focus is boards or entrance preparation, home or online, and how many sessions a week you book. See the pricing guide for the factors.
Two sessions a week suits most Class 11 students; students in coaching who are behind may need a third for a few weeks to clear the backlog. Home, online and hybrid arrangements all work, provided the tutor can see the student's working. In Gurugram, see our page for a physics home tutor in Gurgaon.

If no suitable tutor is close by, online sessions with an experienced tutor work well.
This is very common. Class 11 physics uses vectors, graphs and basic calculus from the first term, and most problems need several steps rather than one formula. The difficulty is usually a gap in these tools or in mechanics, not a lack of ability, and one-to-one work on vectors, free-body diagrams and graded numericals tends to help within a few weeks.
Yes. Many Class 11 students in coaching use a home tutor to clear doubts from coaching modules each week, strengthen mechanics and keep school exams and practicals on track. Tell us which exam and which coaching schedule your child follows, and we will match a tutor who teaches at that level.
Yes, if the tutor can see every line of working through a writing tablet or a camera on the notebook, since diagrams and steps matter so much in physics. Online sessions widen the choice of experienced tutors and fit late slots after coaching. Some families combine one home and one online session a week.
Yes. The demo class is free and is a normal lesson on your child's current chapter, so you can see how the tutor explains concepts, uses vectors and calculus, and handles mistakes. If the tutor is not right, we arrange another demo, and switching later in the year is also free.
Two sessions a week suits most Class 11 students. A student who has fallen behind in coaching or after a weak mid-term may need three for a few weeks to clear the backlog, then return to two. Starting in April or during the summer break gives the tutor time to secure mechanics before the harder chapters.
We can shortlist female tutors where available; tell us when you share your requirement. Being flexible on timing or open to online sessions increases the number of good options.
Tell us the class, board and your area. We share two or three matched tutors, and the first class is a free demo.
