What home tuition costs in Kolkata

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.

Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Online tuition for Kolkata students: the right teacher, whichever bank of the river they live on

Some Kolkata neighbourhoods are among the easiest places to bring a home tutor to, and others are among the hardest. A family near a Blue Line station can choose from tutors all along the line; a family in New Town, where the metro has not arrived yet, or across the Hooghly in Santragachi, often cannot. Online tuition changes that arithmetic. This guide from the NXTutors Academic Team explains when an online tutor is the better choice for a Kolkata student and when it is not, how it changes from class to class, how lessons are arranged through NXTutors, what the desk needs, and how to mix online lessons with home visits from the same tutor.

When does online tuition suit a Kolkata student better?

  • The specialist lives far away. An ISC chemistry teacher in Salt Lake, an IB maths tutor in another city or a Higher Secondary accountancy specialist in Howrah can all teach a student in Behala online on the same evening.
  • Your area is slow to reach. New Town has no working metro yet, Baguiati none inside the neighbourhood, and the evening peak on Diamond Harbour Road, the bypass or VIP Road can turn a short trip into a long one.
  • The week is already full. State-board schools run until the afternoon, and older students add coaching; removing a tutor's travel time from both sides gives back an hour.
  • The festival season. During the Puja weeks, when many lanes and crossings are packed, lessons can carry on online at the usual time.
  • Short, frequent sessions work better. Thirty minutes of doubt-clearing three times a week is easy online and hard to arrange in person.

When should a Kolkata child stay with a home tutor?

  • Young children, up to about Class 3, who learn through their hands and need someone at the table.
  • Children who drift the moment an adult is not in the room, at any age.
  • Heavy written practice in maths or physical science, when there is no tablet or document camera at home.
  • A good local tutor already exists. If a strong teacher lives two stops away on your metro line, there is little reason to switch.

Our home tutor or online tutor comparison goes through the trade-offs in more detail.

Which format fits which Kolkata student?

Home, online or both: common situations in Kolkata and Howrah

How does online tuition change with the class?

  • Classes 1 to 5: online only as a supplement, with a parent present; short reading or tables practice works.
  • Classes 6 to 8: good for focused children and for English or maths with a strong tutor; check the notebook weekly.
  • Classes 9 and 10: strong for one subject at a time, especially ICSE, IGCSE or a second science; Madhyamik students should keep the tutor in the same medium as the school.
  • Classes 11 and 12: often the strongest option. Higher Secondary students preparing for the MCQ semesters can do timed online quizzes; ISC, CBSE and IB students reach specialists who are rare locally. See our Class 11 and Class 12 pages for Kolkata.
  • Entrance tests: JEE, NEET and WBJEE preparation suits online well for doubt sessions and test reviews; see JEE and NEET tutors in Kolkata.

Bengali, English or Hindi medium: does online make the match harder?

It usually makes it easier. In a single neighbourhood, a Bengali-medium physical science tutor or an English-medium ISC accountancy tutor may simply not live within reach. Online, the pool is every tutor in the country who teaches that subject in that language. Two cautions apply. First, say the medium in the request every time, because a tutor who teaches the right syllabus in the wrong language wastes a demo. Second, for state-board students the terms on the paper are the ones in the board's own books, so ask the tutor to work from those books rather than from a translated or national text. The same holds for the second language: a Hindi or Bengali second-language paper is taught most effectively by someone who has taught that exact paper.

Using free official material alongside a tutor

The Higher Secondary council's website carries a section of online subject tutorial videos, and both West Bengal boards publish their notices, routines and results online. A good online tutor treats these as part of the course: a council video watched before the lesson frees the session for questions, and the official notices settle any doubt about patterns or dates. For CBSE, ICSE and ISC, the same applies to the boards' own sample material. Ask at the demo which official resources the tutor uses, and be wary of anyone who relies only on their own notes.

What should the first online month look like?

  1. Week 1: the free demo, then a settling-in lesson to test the audio, the camera angle and the writing setup.
  2. Week 2: the tutor sets a short diagnostic test and shares a plan for the term.
  3. Week 3: regular lessons; homework submitted as photos or on a shared document.
  4. Week 4: a parent check-in of ten minutes: what has improved, what has not, and whether the timing still suits.

How are online lessons arranged through NXTutors?

Search with the word online on the home page, or set the switch to Online, and the distance limit disappears: you see tutors from across India for your subject, board and class. The online tutor list also takes filters for board, class, fee, experience, rating and gender. When you book a demo, choose Online as the mode. We send two or three matched tutors with fees shown, the first class with your choice is a free demo, and switching later is free. The tutor and family agree the video and whiteboard tools; any reliable call app with screen sharing works.

What does your child need on the desk?

  • A laptop or tablet; a phone is a last resort for anything beyond short sessions.
  • For maths, physics, chemistry and accountancy, a way for the tutor to see the working: a writing tablet, a shared whiteboard, or a second phone clipped above the notebook.
  • Headphones with a microphone, which matter in busy homes and on festival evenings.
  • A steady connection and a fixed place to sit, away from the television.
  • For Higher Secondary students, no calculator in practice either, since the council allows none in its semester examinations.

How can you tell whether online lessons are working?

  • Your child talks and writes for most of the lesson rather than watching.
  • The tutor marks written homework, not just verbal answers.
  • School tests show improvement within a term, even if small.
  • Your child can explain, in a sentence, what the last lesson covered.

If two of these are missing after a month, raise it with the tutor, or ask us for another tutor on the shortlist.

Mixing home and online with one tutor

Some tutors teach both ways. A pattern that suits Kolkata is a home visit at the weekend, when roads are calmer, and one or two online sessions on school evenings. The same person sees the notebook in person once a week and keeps momentum the rest of the time. It also keeps the routine going when one side travels during the holidays. Our female home tutors in Kolkata page explains how the same hybrid helps families who want a woman tutor who lives far away.

How do you keep online tuition safe?

  • Lessons in a shared room with the door open, and the camera facing a plain wall.
  • Use links you or the tutor share directly; no private chat with a young child outside lesson times.
  • Recordings, if any, only with your agreement.
  • Tutors who join go through an ID check of a government photo ID; it is not a police or background check, so keep the house rules.

Is an online tutor cheaper than a home tutor in Kolkata?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Online removes the journey from the tutor's costs, so some tutors quote a little less, while a scarce specialist may still charge the same. Every tutor sets their own fee, shown before the demo. See home tuition fees in Kolkata and our pricing guide.

Getting started

If you are not sure whether online will suit, start from your neighbourhood page and see who teaches nearby: Ballygunge, with metro, train and Orange Line options; Baghajatin near the bypass; heritage Sovabazar in the north; Bangur Avenue between Jessore Road and VIP Road; New Town Action Area III, where no metro station is open; or Santragachi along the Kona Expressway. If the right person is not within reach, switch to Online.

Send us the class, board, medium, subjects and the hours that suit, with the mode set to Online or Either; we reply with two or three tutors and their fees. Book a free demo, browse online tutors, read about online versus offline tutoring, or see every neighbourhood on the Kolkata home tutors page. Commerce students can also start from commerce tutors in Kolkata, and IB or IGCSE families from our IB and IGCSE pages.

Online Tuition in Kolkata: common questions

When is online tuition better than a home tutor in Kolkata?

When the right specialist lives far away, when your area is slow to reach, such as New Town with no working metro yet, or when the week is too full for travel on both sides. It also keeps lessons going during the Puja weeks. For young children and those who drift, home usually works better.

Can online tuition work for Madhyamik or Higher Secondary students?

Yes, provided the tutor teaches in the same medium as the school and can see written working live. Higher Secondary students can also use online sessions for timed MCQ practice before the council's Semester I and III examinations. Ask the tutor in the demo how they handle both formats.

What equipment does my child need for online lessons?

A laptop or tablet, headphones with a microphone, and a steady connection. For maths, science and accountancy, the tutor must see the working, so add a writing tablet, a shared whiteboard or a second phone above the notebook. A fixed, quiet place to sit matters as much as the device.

Does NXTutors provide the video platform?

No. The tutor and family agree the video and whiteboard tools, and any reliable call app with screen sharing works. NXTutors matches you with two or three tutors, shows their fees before the demo, makes the first class a free demo, and lets you switch tutor later at no cost.

Can the same tutor teach at home and online?

Often, yes. A common arrangement is a weekend home visit, when roads are calmer, plus one or two online sessions on school evenings. The tutor sees the notebook in person each week and keeps momentum the rest of the time, which also helps during holidays when travel is harder.

Is an online tutor cheaper than a home tutor in Kolkata?

Sometimes a little. Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour. Without travel, some tutors quote less online, while scarce specialists may not. Each tutor sets their own fee, and every fee on your shortlist is visible before you book the free demo.

How do I keep online lessons safe for my child?

Hold lessons in a shared room with the door open, use links shared directly by you or the tutor, and agree that there is no private chat outside lesson times. Recordings should be made only with your consent. Tutors who join go through an ID check, but it is not a police check.
