What home tuition costs in Kolkata

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.

Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Biology home tutor in Kolkata: diagrams, precise terms and the right syllabus

Senior biology punishes loose wording. "The heart pumps blood" and a labelled account of the cardiac cycle earn very different marks, and a student who knows the idea but writes it vaguely loses a little on every question. In Kolkata that student may be sitting ISC, CBSE, the West Bengal Higher Secondary, NEET or an international course, and each asks for something slightly different. NXTutors takes the course, the class and your neighbourhood, then sends two or three biology tutors who teach that course and can reach you or teach online. You see their fees on the shortlist, and your first class with the tutor you choose is a free demo.

Which biology course does your child take?

Up to Class 8, biology sits inside general science, and a science tutor handles it. From Class 9 the courses split. ICSE students take biology as a paper of its own; CBSE students meet it as chapters inside one Science paper; and from Class 11 it becomes a full subject with practical work on every board.

Class 11 and 12 biology courses studied in Kolkata, and how each is marked
CourseSet byTheoryPractical and other marks
ISC Biology (863)CISCEThree hours, 70 marksPractical 15, project 10, practical file 5
Biology (044)CBSEThree hours, 70 marksPractical examination of 30 marks
Higher Secondary BiologyWBCHSESet by the councilTake the scheme from the council's own notices
NEET (UG) biologyNTA90 of 180 objective questionsNone; four marks for a right answer, one lost for a wrong one
IB Biology SL or HL; IGCSE 0610 or 4BI1IB; Cambridge or PearsonPapers, 80% in the IBScientific investigation (IB); practical paper or practical questions (IGCSE)

ISC Biology: where does a tutor spend the Class 12 year?

CISCE has a large following in the city, and ISC Biology rewards detail: named structures, correct terms and full explanations, with the syllabus asking for structures to be taught through diagrams. Students coming up from ICSE already know the style; the jump is in depth and volume. The Class 12 theory paper divides its 70 marks like this:

ISC Biology Class 12 theory units and the tutor's focus in each
UnitMarksWhat a tutor should drill
Reproduction16Labelled sections of flower, ovule and gonads; stages in the right order
Genetics and Evolution15Crosses and pedigree problems written step by step, and the molecular basis of inheritance
Biology and Human Welfare14Named causes, symptoms and prevention, stated precisely
Ecology and Environment15Definitions with examples, and reading data from graphs
Biotechnology and its Applications10Each process as a numbered sequence with its tools

The other 30 marks are earned outside the theory hall: a three-hour practical worth 15, project work worth 10 and a practical file worth 5. A tutor can question a project draft and check the file is complete; the work itself must remain your child's.

CBSE Biology: which Class 12 unit needs the most help?

In CBSE's 2026-27 curriculum, Genetics and Evolution carries 20 of the 70 Class 12 theory marks, ahead of Reproduction at 16, Biology and Human Welfare and Biotechnology at 12 each, and Ecology at 10. It is also the unit where reasoning matters more than memory, so a tutor should set inheritance problems every week from the time it is taught. About half the paper tests knowledge and understanding, the rest application and analysis, through multiple-choice, assertion-reason, short and long answers and case-based questions. The 30 practical marks cover experiments, spotting, the record and an investigatory project with a viva; keeping the record current through the year protects them.

What changes when a Class 10 student starts Class 11 biology?

Three things change at once, whichever board your child moves into, and a tutor should plan for each of them in the first term:

  1. Volume. Class 11 chapters are long and closely argued, so short chapter notes and a diagram sheet should be made as each one ends, not in February.
  2. Vocabulary. Terms from botany, zoology and biochemistry arrive every week; a running glossary written in the student's own words keeps them straight.
  3. Practical work. Records, files and projects start counting. A monthly check that the record is up to date avoids a rush before the practical exam.

Students who switch from a CBSE school to ISC, or from ICSE to the Higher Secondary course, also change the style of answer expected, and the first few written answers are worth marking closely.

Higher Secondary biology on the West Bengal board

The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education runs the Class 11 and 12 course and sets its own biology syllabus, textbooks and question pattern, just as the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education does for Madhyamik at Class 10. We describe these papers only in general terms. State-board schools teach in Bengali, English and other media, so ask for a tutor who can teach biology's technical vocabulary in your child's medium, and who works from the prescribed textbooks and the council's latest notices rather than a CBSE plan. If a Higher Secondary student is also sitting NEET, the tutor should add objective practice on the NEET syllabus.

How much of NEET is biology?

Half of it. The NEET (UG) 2026 bulletin set 180 compulsory multiple-choice questions in 180 minutes, with 90 in biology split between botany and zoology, for 720 marks overall, and biology marks were used first to separate candidates on equal scores. Negative marking means a half-remembered fact is worse than a skipped question. A tutor helps most by testing NCERT line by line, including diagrams and tables, and by going through every mock to find which chapters and question types lose marks. NTA confirms the pattern each year, and the 2027 bulletin had not been released when we wrote this, so check neet.nta.nic.in. Our NEET home tutor page covers all three subjects, and the guide to NEET biology with an NCERT-first approach goes chapter by chapter.

IGCSE and IB biology families

A smaller group of Kolkata students follow Cambridge IGCSE or the IB. For Cambridge 0610, the alternative to practical paper catches many out: students describe methods, read scales and plot graphs without apparatus, so a tutor should set those past-paper questions regularly. Edexcel 4BI1 is untiered and tests practical skills inside its written papers. IB Biology builds on four themes across levels of organisation, with the scientific investigation worth 20% of the grade. Specialists are few in any city, so these families often choose an online tutor; the national biology home tutor guide compares the courses.

How does a biology tutor reach six Kolkata neighbourhoods?

A senior biology tutor usually comes twice a week, so the route matters. Six neighbourhoods from six zones show how it varies; the Kolkata tuition page lists every locality.

For more detail, see the zone guides for Salt Lake, New Town and Rajarhat, Tollygunge, Jadavpur and Garia and Howrah. Since August 2025 the Green Line has run unbroken from Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector V, which lets a tutor from one bank of the Hooghly teach on the other.

Should biology lessons be at home or online?

Biology travels well online for most Class 11 and 12 students: diagrams can be drawn on a tablet or held up to the camera, and mock analysis suits a shared screen. Home lessons suit a student who drifts on a screen, and a family that wants the tutor to see the practical file and project on paper. In New Town and Rajarhat, where the Orange Line stations are still being built, a tutor who already lives nearby or an online specialist is often the practical answer. Many families settle on one home session a week and one online session for tests and doubts.

What should the demo class show you?

  • The tutor asks what your child already knows before teaching anything new.
  • Your child draws and labels a diagram, not only watches one being drawn.
  • The tutor knows the exact course: ISC practical and project, CBSE unit weights, the Higher Secondary textbooks, or the NEET pattern.
  • A written answer is corrected for terms and order of steps, not just for facts.
  • You hear how earlier chapters will be revised, so Class 11 work is still there in Class 12.

If it is not a fit, we arrange a demo with the next tutor on the list, and a later switch costs nothing.

How much does a biology home tutor in Kolkata charge?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Senior and NEET biology usually sits in that upper part. Tutors set their own fees, and you see each shortlisted fee before the demo.

Biology Home Tutor in Kolkata: common questions

How much does a biology home tutor in Kolkata cost?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Senior and NEET biology usually sits in the upper part, and each fee is shown before the demo.

Do you have ISC Biology tutors in Kolkata?

Yes. We match tutors who teach ISC Biology (863) and know how its Class 12 marks divide: a 70-mark theory paper, a 15-mark practical, 10 for project work and 5 for the practical file. Tell us the exam year and the units your child finds hardest.

Can a tutor teach Higher Secondary biology on the West Bengal board?

Yes. We look for tutors who teach from the council's prescribed textbooks, follow its notices for the paper, and can explain technical terms in your child's medium of study. We keep our description of the state papers general, so ask the tutor at the demo how they plan the two years.

Can one biology tutor prepare my child for boards and NEET together?

Often, yes. The syllabuses overlap, but board papers reward full written answers and diagrams while NEET rewards fast, exact recall on objective questions with negative marking. A good plan gives each style its own time every week and uses mock analysis to decide which chapters to revisit.

Which parts of Kolkata do your biology tutors cover?

We match across nine zones, from Ballygunge, Tollygunge and Behala in the south to Salt Lake, New Town, Lake Town and north Kolkata, and across the river in Howrah. When nobody suitable can reach you at your chosen hour, we suggest online lessons or a mix of home and online.

Does online biology tuition work for Class 11 and 12?

For most senior students it does. Diagrams can be drawn on a tablet or shown to the camera, and mocks can be analysed on a shared screen. A home tutor suits students who lose focus online and families who want the practical file and project checked on paper.

Which Class 12 biology unit needs the most tutoring?

For many students it is Genetics and Evolution, which carries 20 of the 70 CBSE theory marks and 15 in ISC. Inheritance problems and molecular genetics need reasoning, not recall, so a tutor should set crosses and pedigree questions every week once the unit begins.
