North Kolkata and Howrah Home Tuition Guide: Shyambazar to Shibpur

By NXTutors Academic Team 7 min read

North Kolkata and Howrah sit on either side of the Hooghly and share one thing that matters to a home tutor: most families live in older neighbourhoods where the visit starts at a front door, not a society gate. What separates them is the river, and since 2024 the metro has crossed it. A tutor from Sealdah or Salt Lake can now reach Howrah by the Green Line, and north Kolkata has had the Blue Line and the Circular Railway for decades.

This guide covers two zones: North Kolkata, from Bagbazar and Sovabazar by the river to Shyambazar, Maniktala, Belgachia and Sinthee; and Howrah, with Shibpur, Salkia and Santragachi. For each it shows the stations tutors use, what homes look like, and how to time a class around crossings, markets and festival crowds.

How do the two zones compare?

North Kolkata

This is the older city. The Circular Railway's first passenger line, from Bagbazar to Prinsep Ghat, opened on 15 August 1984 and reached Dum Dum by June 1990. The Blue Line opened its first stretch in October 1984; Shyambazar and Sovabazar Sutanuti stations followed on 15 February 1995 and Girish Park on 19 February 1995. In February 2021 the line was extended north to Baranagar and Dakshineswar.

Bagbazar grew out of the historic village of Sutanuti and developed as a residential quarter of old Bengali families; the old Chitpur Road runs through it, and Bagbazar Street runs east from the ghat. Visits are almost always to a family home at street level. Next door, Sovabazar grew as a merchant quarter, and its family mansions have held Durga Puja celebrations since 1757. It has two rail links, Sovabazar Sutanuti on the Blue Line and Sovabazar Ahiritola on the Circular Railway, and Kumartuli and Shyampukur are neighbours. During the Puja season its lanes fill with visitors, so agree class times with that in mind.

Shyambazar is built around its five-point crossing, where Barrackpore Trunk Road meets several other main roads, and it is a major shopping area for jewellery, textiles and festival goods. The lanes behind the main roads hold older houses with verandahs and iron latticework, and many plots now carry apartment buildings. The crossing is crowded at school and office hours, so mid-afternoon or later evening classes avoid the worst of it.

Maniktala was a separate municipality until the 1923 Calcutta Municipal Act brought it into the city, and the Upper Circular Road through it was laid in 1799 along the old Maratha Ditch. Girish Park on the Blue Line and Sealdah on the Green Line are the stations most tutors use. Belgachia, on the stretch of Jessore Road known as Belgachia Road, has had its Blue Line station since 1984, and mixes older houses with two-bedroom apartments by local builders. Further north, Sinthee is mostly apartments around Sinthee More on BT Road, with Dum Dum metro station and Dum Dum Junction the nearest rail links.

Across the zone, most families live in houses or small buildings without a society gate, so the tutor simply comes to the door; a few larger buildings keep a visitor register. The last few steps are often on foot through narrow lanes, which is why metro or bus is usually more practical for tutors than a car.

Howrah

Howrah changed for tutors on 6 March 2024, when the Green Line's under-river section opened from Esplanade to Howrah and Howrah Maidan. Since 22 August 2025 the line has run continuously from Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector V, so tutors living along it, from Sealdah to Salt Lake, can now reach Howrah homes without a long road trip across the bridge.

Shibpur is a large neighbourhood on the west bank, covering Howrah Municipal Corporation wards 25 to 45 apart from ward 43. Its main roads are the Grand Trunk Road and Andul Road, Foreshore Road along the river and the Kona Expressway. The older core is densely built, with houses along narrow lanes, while multi-storey apartment complexes have come up in recent years. Shalimar on the South Eastern Railway is the nearby terminus, and ferries run from the riverside ghats.

Salkia, in north Howrah, has Pilkhana to the south, Liluah and Ghusuri to the north and Bamangachi to the west, and is anchored by Haragunge Bazaar, a market more than a century old. Homes are mainly flats in mid-size buildings and older houses, usually without a society gate. Liluah and Tikiapara are the local suburban stations, Howrah station is the main hub, and ferries cross from Golabari and Bandhaghat ghats. Market streets get crowded in the evening, so give the tutor an exact lane landmark.

Santragachi is different again: two- and three-bedroom flats in gated complexes along the Kona Expressway, where a central bus terminus opened in 2015. Santragachi Junction is one of the intercity railway junctions of Howrah and Kolkata, with local trains on the South Eastern suburban network, and Santragachi Jheel, a lake that draws migratory birds in winter, is the local landmark. Complexes log visitors, so share the tower, flat number and gate rules before the demo, and allow a margin for the expressway at office hours.

What should families on either side of the river plan for?

  • Festival weeks: in Sovabazar, the Durga Puja season brings crowds of visitors into the lanes; agree in advance whether classes move online or pause.
  • Busy hours: the Shyambazar crossing is crowded at school and office hours and Salkia's market streets in the evening, so pick a slot outside those times or a tutor living nearby.
  • Crossing the river: a Howrah family can now draw tutors from along the Green Line; ask whether a tutor is coming by metro, ferry or road, and fix a slot that suits that trip.
  • Specialist subjects: where the nearest tutor for a subject lives across the city, one online class a week alongside a home tutor saves a long journey.

Frequently asked questions

Which stations do tutors use in North Kolkata?

Mostly the Blue Line, at Belgachia, Shyambazar, Sovabazar Sutanuti and Girish Park, with Sealdah on the Green Line for the Maniktala side. The Circular Railway stops at Bagbazar and Sovabazar Ahiritola near the river. From any of them, a short walk or rickshaw ride through the lanes finishes the trip.

Do North Kolkata homes have gates or visitor registers?

Rarely. Most families in Bagbazar, Sovabazar, Shyambazar and Belgachia live in family houses or small buildings, so the tutor goes straight to the door. A few larger buildings in Maniktala and Belgachia keep a visitor register, so pass the tutor's name on before the free demo class.

Can a tutor from Kolkata reach Howrah easily now?

Yes, much more easily than before. Since March 2024 the Green Line has run under the Hooghly to Howrah and Howrah Maidan, and since August 2025 it has continued straight through Sealdah to Salt Lake. Tutors along that line can reach Shibpur and Salkia, finishing by auto or rickshaw.

When is the easiest time for a home class in this part of the city?

Mid-afternoon or after the evening rush. The Shyambazar crossing, BT Road, Jessore Road and the Kona Expressway are busiest at office and school hours, and market streets in Salkia fill in the evening. Plan around the Durga Puja season too, when the lanes of Sovabazar fill with visitors.

How much does home tuition cost in North Kolkata and Howrah?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each tutor sets their own fee, which you see before the free demo.
