Home Tuition Fees in Patna: Price the Subject Mix
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each tutor sets their own fee and you see it before the free demo class, so the band is a starting point, not a quote. It applies across Patna, whether the lessons happen in a flat off Boring Road, a house on a numbered road in Rajendra Nagar, a township tower at Saguna More or an older home in the lanes of Patna City.
Most Patna parents ask a different question first: how many tutors does my child need, and for which subjects? This guide prices common subject mixes week by week, then looks at the board, your part of the city, home versus online classes, and what to settle before paying.
What does one hour of home tuition buy?
An hourly rate pays for the tutor's time in your home, but a useful hour has three parts, and it is worth asking any tutor how they divide it:
- Explaining: going back over the idea the class teacher covered, in the order your child needs, with questions along the way.
- Practice under watch: the child works through problems while the tutor watches the method, which is where most mistakes are caught.
- Checking and setting work: marking the last set of homework and leaving a short set for the days between visits.
A tutor near ₹800 and one near ₹2,500 both sell an hour; what usually differs is how well they know your child's class and board. At the demo, watch how the time is split as closely as you watch the explanation.
How many tutors does the subject mix need?
The biggest driver of a family's tuition spending is rarely the hourly rate. It is the number of subjects that need a tutor and the hours each one takes. The table prices five common mixes for a single week, at both ends of the band. The hours are planning examples rather than rules.
| Stage | Subjects taught at home | Tutors | Hours a week | One week at ₹800 an hour | One week at ₹2,500 an hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classes 3–5 | Maths and English, or all-round homework support | 1 | 2 | ₹1,600 | ₹5,000 |
| Classes 6–8 | Maths and science together | 1 | 3 | ₹2,400 | ₹7,500 |
| Classes 9–10 | Maths, with science as a second subject | 1 or 2 | 4 | ₹3,200 | ₹10,000 |
| Classes 11–12 science | Physics, chemistry and maths or biology | 2 or 3 | 6 | ₹4,800 | ₹15,000 |
| Class 12 with JEE or NEET goals | Three science subjects plus problem practice | 3 | 8 | ₹6,400 | ₹20,000 |
For a rough month, multiply the weekly figure by four; for a school term, by the number of teaching weeks in it. The junior rows usually sit nearer the left-hand column, while Classes 11–12 and JEE or NEET work sit toward the upper end, and a specialist for JEE Advanced can charge more than ₹2,500 an hour. The NXTutors pricing guide explains the factors class by class.
One tutor for two subjects, or two tutors?
Up to Class 8, one tutor often covers maths and science in one set of visits. From Class 9 each syllabus deepens, and a separate tutor for the weaker subject often makes sense. By Classes 11 and 12, physics, chemistry, maths and biology are each taught in depth, and a tutor who teaches one of them thoroughly is often a better use of the money than one who spreads across three.
Does BSEB, CBSE or ICSE change the rate?
Rarely on its own. Patna students study under the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB), the state board, and under CBSE and CISCE (ICSE and ISC), and some families look for IB or IGCSE help as well. A fee follows class, subject and the tutor's experience more than the name of the board. What the board changes is the experience to look for:
- BSEB: ask which classes the tutor has taught under the state board recently, and whether they teach in Hindi, English or a mix, so the lessons match the medium your child studies in.
- CBSE: ask which CBSE classes they have taught recently and how they use the board's sample papers.
- ICSE and ISC: ask whether they have taught the council's syllabus for this class, and how they prepare students for its papers.
- IB and IGCSE: these programmes sit toward the upper end of the band, and a specialist for IB HL can charge more.
If your child is moving between boards, for example from BSEB to CBSE for Class 11, set aside a few extra hours in the opening months for the change of textbooks and question style.
Does your side of Patna change the cost?
Location seldom moves the band. It decides how many tutors can reach you without a long ride, and so how many fees you can compare. Patna's metro is still young: the Blue Line opened to the public on 7 October 2025 between Bhootnath, Zero Mile and the Patliputra bus terminal, and on 2 July 2026 services reached Malahi Pakri in Kankarbagh. The rest of the city is reached by two-wheeler, car or auto.
| Part of Patna | How tutors usually arrive | Typical homes | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boring Road & Patliputra | Two-wheeler, car or auto; no metro station is open here yet | Flats in low- and mid-rise buildings, houses on colony lanes | North and west Patna guide |
| Bailey Road & Danapur | By road for now; the Red Line beneath Bailey Road is still being built | Apartment belts along the road, gated townships at Saguna More, cantonment homes in Danapur | North and west Patna guide |
| Kankarbagh & Rajendra Nagar | Blue Line to Malahi Pakri or Bhootnath, then an auto; or straight by road | Houses, builder floors and apartments; numbered roads in Rajendra Nagar | South and old Patna guide |
| Gandhi Maidan, Ashok Rajpath & Old Patna | By road, with the Ganga riverfront expressway linking Digha to the old city | Central apartments, older houses in the lanes of Patna City | South and old Patna guide |
| Anisabad, Gardanibagh & Phulwari | By road; Phulwari Sharif station is on the Howrah-Delhi main line | Plotted homes, officers' housing, newer apartment buildings | South and old Patna guide |
- Nearest first: NXTutors lists tutors in or near your area first, then your zone, then the rest of Patna, then online tutors, so the first names you see have the shortest trip to your door.
- Peak hours on the main roads: Bailey Road, the Boring Road crossing, Ashok Rajpath and the Anisabad roundabout all fill up at office and evening hours. A fixed slot outside the rush stops a paid hour from starting late.
Home, online or a mix: which shape suits the budget?
| Shape | How it works | What it changes | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| All at home | Every subject is taught in your home | Face-to-face work on every subject, with the most visits a week | Can each tutor's trip fit the weekly visits? |
| Home plus online | The subject that needs the most hands-on help at home; a second subject or a specialist online | Fewer trips each week and a wider choice for the online subject | Does your child work well on screen in that subject? |
| All online | Every subject is taught online | No travel for anyone, and tutors from anywhere in India | Is there a quiet corner and a steady connection at home? |
Each tutor sets their own fee for either format, so compare the actual quotes rather than assuming one format costs less. Our comparison of home and online tutors helps decide which subject goes where.
What should we settle before the first paid class?
- The weekly slot. Fix the day, start time and length, and keep them.
- Missed classes. Agree what happens when either side cancels, and how a missed hour is made up.
- Exam-season hours. Ask whether extra classes before unit tests, pre-boards or the boards are charged at the usual rate.
- When fees are paid. Settle whether payment is made at the start of each month or after the classes are held.
- A review date. Pick a point, such as the next unit test, to check whether the hours are right.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a home tutor cost in Patna?
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each tutor sets their own fee, and NXTutors shows it before the free demo.
How do we estimate one week of tuition for two subjects?
Add the weekly hours for both subjects and multiply by the hourly fee. Four hours a week comes to ₹3,200 at ₹800 an hour and ₹10,000 at ₹2,500 an hour. Multiply the weekly figure by four for a rough month, and compare it with each tutor's actual quote before the demo.
Is a BSEB tutor cheaper than a CBSE or ICSE tutor?
Not as a rule. Class, subject and the tutor's experience set most of a fee, and each tutor sets their own. The board changes what to look for instead: for BSEB, ask about recent state-board classes and whether the tutor teaches in Hindi, English or both, to match your child's medium.
Does living near a Blue Line station help?
It can widen the choice. In Kankarbagh and along Bhootnath Road, a tutor can ride the metro to Malahi Pakri or Bhootnath and finish by auto, so tutors from further along the line can reach you. The fee band stays the same; you simply have more quotes to compare.
Do we pay anything before choosing a tutor?
No. NXTutors sends two or three matched tutors, shows each fee before the demo, and the first class with each is a free demo. Paid classes begin only after you choose a tutor and agree the weekly slot, and switching tutor later is free if the fit changes.
