Home Tuition in South and Old Patna: A Locality Guide
South Patna and the old city change character every few localities. Kankarbagh is one of the city's largest residential colonies and, with Bhootnath Road, the part of this guide that the metro already reaches. Rajendra Nagar is laid out on numbered roads. Around Gandhi Maidan and along Ashok Rajpath sits Bankipore, the old colonial civil station, and further east the lanes of Patna City belong to the old trading town. To the south-west, Anisabad, Gardanibagh and Phulwari Sharif are growing fast, with plotted homes and new apartment buildings.
This guide covers three zones: Kankarbagh & Rajendra Nagar; Gandhi Maidan, Ashok Rajpath & Old Patna; and Anisabad, Gardanibagh & Phulwari. For each locality it shows the route in, the routine at the gate or the door, and when a weekly class is easiest to keep.
How does a tutor reach each zone?
The first Patna Metro section, on the Blue Line between Bhootnath, Zero Mile and the Patliputra bus terminal, was inaugurated on 6 October 2025 and opened to the public the next day. Services were extended to Malahi Pakri, serving Kankarbagh, on 2 July 2026; trains pass Khemnichak without stopping until its station is complete. The underground Blue Line section from Rajendra Nagar to Patna Junction, with seven underground stations including Akashvani and Gandhi Maidan, is still being built.

Kankarbagh & Rajendra Nagar
Rajendra Nagar is a planned colony divided by numbered roads, with parks and playing fields, and Rajendra Nagar Terminal opened as a full station on 31 March 2003 to relieve Patna Junction. Bhootnath Road links the Old Bypass Road, also called Kankarbagh Main Road, with the New Bypass Road (NH-30). At the north-eastern edge of Kankarbagh, Kumhrar holds the excavated remains of ancient Pataliputra, including an 80-pillared hall of the Mauryan period.
- Kankarbagh: independent houses, builder floors, plots and a growing number of apartment buildings, with busy markets on Kankarbagh Main Road, the 90 Feet road and PC Colony Road. Malahi Pakri station, at the roundabout on the 90 Feet road, gives tutors a metro-plus-auto route. Houses mean doorstep arrival; apartment buildings may keep a gate register.
- Rajendra Nagar: older independent houses and newer apartment buildings, with Lohanipur, Bahadurpur and Kadamkuan as neighbours. The numbered roads make homes easy to find, so share the road number with the house or building name. Traffic near the terminal builds at train rush times.
- Kadamkuan: a central locality close to the railway station and major markets, with apartments, builder floors and plots, and two-bedroom flats the most common rentals. Roads stay crowded through much of the day and parking is limited, so tutors prefer a two-wheeler and a precise lane landmark.
- Bhootnath Road: a densely built road through Bahadurpur Housing Colony, with residential complexes, coaching centres and shops, and the city's television tower as a landmark. Bhootnath station has been open since October 2025. The road is heaviest when coaching classes change over, so avoid those hours.
Gandhi Maidan, Ashok Rajpath & Old Patna
Bankipore developed as the colonial civil station after 1765. Gandhi Maidan was formerly Bankipore Maidan, and Golghar was built between 1784 and 1786. Patna Junction, opened in 1862 and first called Bankipore Junction, is managed by the Danapur division of East Central Railway. Ashok Rajpath runs from around Golghar parallel to the Ganga and ends at Didarganj, linking central Patna with Patna City. The Ganga riverfront expressway from Digha to Didarganj opened in phases between 24 June 2022 and 10 April 2025, and it connects with Ashok Rajpath at nine points.
- Bankipur and Gandhi Maidan: the central district around the Maidan, with the Exhibition Road commercial area and its residential apartments just to the south. Many families live in apartment buildings, so ask whether the gate needs the tutor's name in advance. Central roads are crowded at office hours and during events at the Maidan.
- Ashok Rajpath: institutions line the northern side, while the southern side has old shops, markets, private houses and religious buildings. Families often live in older houses near the market frontage. It is one of the busiest roads in Patna, so a tutor on a two-wheeler who uses the riverfront expressway for part of the trip keeps better time.
- Patna City (old city): the old eastern part of Patna and a major trading centre, with neighbourhoods such as Bengali Colony, Jhauganj, Rambagh, Kali Asthan, Marufganj and Mirchai Gali. Patna Sahib station, formerly Patna City station, is on the main line towards Howrah. Most homes are older houses in the lanes, where two-wheelers and e-rickshaws work better than cars.
Anisabad, Gardanibagh & Phulwari
The south-western zone is where the city is still spreading. Phulwari Sharif is part of the Patna metropolitan region, with National Highway 139 running through it, and its station lies on the Howrah-Delhi main line. An elevated four-lane road from the Anisabad roundabout through Phulwari Sharif has been planned, with ramps at both ends. At Gardanibagh, a state staff-housing project of 752 flats for officers was taken up from 2020.
- Anisabad: apartment buildings of one to four bedrooms, plotted homes and builder floors around the busy Anisabad roundabout. There is no metro station, so tutors come by road. On plotted lanes the tutor arrives at the doorstep; apartment buildings may ask for the tutor's name at the gate.
- Gardanibagh: an established locality close to the Secretariat area, bordered by Bailey Road, Kidwaipuri, Jakkanpur, Rajbanshi Nagar and the Patna-Gaya road. Government housing and private apartment buildings usually check visitors at the gate, so give the tutor your block and flat number. Patna Junction is close by.
- Phulwari Sharif: newer apartment buildings make up much of the housing, alongside independent houses, plots and builder floors, with Anisabad, Khajpura and Beur nearby. Independent houses allow doorstep arrival, while apartment buildings usually register visitors.
How should families in these zones plan the week?
- Use the metro where it runs. In Kankarbagh and along Bhootnath Road, a tutor who rides the Blue Line and finishes by auto can hold an evening slot more easily.
- Give a landmark the tutor can find. Road numbers in Rajendra Nagar; a lane and a nearby shop in Kadamkuan and Patna City.
- Stay clear of the pinch points. The Anisabad roundabout, Ashok Rajpath and the roads around Patna Junction are busiest at office hours, so a fixed slot outside the rush, with a tutor from the same zone, keeps classes regular.
- Move the specialist online. If the right tutor for a board or an exam lives on the far side of the city, an online class saves both of you the trip. Our comparison of home and online tutors helps you decide.

Bhootnath, open since October 2025, and Malahi Pakri in Kankarbagh, open since July 2026, both on the Blue Line towards Zero Mile and the Patliputra bus terminal. The underground section from Rajendra Nagar to Patna Junction, including Gandhi Maidan and Akashvani, is still being built and is not open.
How do tutors find homes in Rajendra Nagar?
By road number. Rajendra Nagar is a planned colony divided by numbered roads, so give the tutor your road number with the house or building name. Rajendra Nagar Terminal is the colony's station, and traffic near it builds at train rush times, so agree a weekday slot that avoids them.
Is Patna City easy for tutors to reach?
Easier than it was. The eastern end of the Ganga riverfront expressway at Didarganj has been open since 2025, and Patna Sahib station is on the main line. Most homes are older houses in the lanes, so share a clear lane landmark and a phone number, and expect a two-wheeler or e-rickshaw.
Do Gardanibagh and Phulwari Sharif buildings check visitors?
Usually, yes. Government housing and private apartment buildings in Gardanibagh check visitors at the gate, and newer apartment buildings in Phulwari Sharif register them.
