Home Tuition Fees in Thiruvananthapuram (2026): Hours First

By NXTutors Academic Team 8 min read

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. That band applies across Thiruvananthapuram, from a villa in Kowdiar or Peroorkada to a flat near the IT park at Kazhakkoottam or a house in the old theruvu of Karamana. Each tutor sets their own fee, and you see it before the free demo class.

A band that wide is only useful once you know how many hours your child actually needs. So this guide works the other way round from most fee pages. It starts with hours, sized to the child's class and how they are coping, then turns those hours into a weekly cost at three points in the band. After that it looks at the board, at how tutors reach each part of the city while the metro is still only a proposal, and at the lines worth agreeing in writing before the first paid class.

Step one: how many hours does your child need?

Most families overspend in one of two ways: they book more hours than the child can use, or they book too few and then add emergency classes before exams. A simple way to avoid both is to place the child in one row of the table below and read across to their class. The figures are weekly hours for one subject, as a starting point to discuss at the demo, not a rule.

How the child is doing in the subjectClasses 1–8Classes 9–10Classes 11–12
On track, wants steady practice1 to 2 hours2 hours2 hours
Slipping in recent tests2 hours2 to 3 hours3 hours
Catching up after a gap or a change of board2 to 3 hours3 to 4 hours3 to 4 hours
Preparing for an entrance exam alongside schoolNot usually needed2 hours, if starting early4 or more hours, often split across subjects

Add the rows for each subject you want covered. A Class 10 student who is on track in science but slipping in maths needs roughly four to five hours a week in total, not the eight that two separate full plans might suggest. If one tutor can teach both subjects, the same hours may fit into fewer visits.

Step two: turn weekly hours into a weekly cost

Once you have a weekly total, the cost follows directly. The ladder below prices one to six hours a week at the two ends of the NXTutors band and at one point in the middle. The middle column is an illustration, not a typical fee; your shortlist will show the actual rates.

Hours a weekAt ₹800 an hourAt ₹1,500 an hourAt ₹2,500 an hour
1₹800₹1,500₹2,500
2₹1,600₹3,000₹5,000
3₹2,400₹4,500₹7,500
4₹3,200₹6,000₹10,000
5₹4,000₹7,500₹12,500
6₹4,800₹9,000₹15,000

Multiply the weekly figure by the number of weeks you expect to continue and you have the full commitment. Junior classes and homework support usually sit in the left-hand column. Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the right, and a specialist for JEE Advanced or IB HL can charge more than ₹2,500 an hour.

Does the board change the fee?

Thiruvananthapuram families study under several boards: the Kerala State Board, which follows the state syllabus with the SSLC at the end of Class 10 and the Higher Secondary course, often called Plus Two, in Classes 11 and 12; CBSE; ICSE and ISC; and the international IB and IGCSE programmes. The board rarely sets a rate on its own. What moves a quote is how much board-specific experience the tutor brings and how senior the class is.

  • Kerala State Board, CBSE and ICSE up to Class 10: many tutors teach more than one of these, which gives you more quotes to compare.
  • Higher Secondary, ISC and CBSE Classes 11–12: subject depth matters more, so families often use a separate tutor for each science subject, and quotes sit higher in the band.
  • IB and IGCSE: the assessment style is different, and fewer tutors know it well, so expect quotes toward the upper end and consider an online specialist.

If your child is moving between boards, for example from the state syllabus to CBSE in Class 11, budget a few weeks of catch-up hours from the third row of the first table.

How does your part of the city shape the shortlist?

Location does not set the fee, but it decides how many tutors can reach you easily. The city's metro is a proposed project and is not under way, so tutors move by bus, auto, two-wheeler or, for a few areas, train. Our Thiruvananthapuram tuition guide covers each locality in detail.

ZoneHow most tutors arriveTiming to plan aroundExample localities
Kowdiar & PattomCity buses through Pattom, a major stop for Thampanoor and East Fort services; autos from the junctionsOffice hours at the Pattom, Vellayambalam and Kesavadasapuram junctionsKowdiar, Pattom, Kesavadasapuram
Peroorkada & VattiyoorkavuBuses to East Fort and along MC Road; autos for the last legGovernment office hours around the Civil Station; school times on MC RoadPeroorkada, Vattiyoorkavu, Nalanchira
Ulloor & KazhakkoottamBuses along NH 66; Kazhakuttam railway stationIT shift changes and the busy Ulloor junctionSreekaryam, Kazhakkoottam
Thycaud & KaramanaThiruvananthapuram Central and the central bus station at Thampanoor; buses along NH 66 southOffice rush around Thampanoor and on NH 66Thycaud, Karamana, Nemom

Two practical points follow. A fixed weekly slot, set away from the junction peaks, keeps classes starting on time. And where the right specialist lives on the other side of the city, an online class can be cheaper overall than paying for a long trip in someone's schedule.

One budget, three ways to spend it

Take a Class 10 student who needs about four hours a week across maths and science. Here are three ways a family might arrange those hours, using illustrative rates inside the band.

PlanHow it worksWeekly cost at the illustrative rateWorth checking
One home tutor for both subjectsTwo visits of two hours each, at ₹1,000 an hour₹4,000Is the tutor equally strong in maths and science for your board?
Home tutor for maths, online tutor for scienceTwo hours at home at ₹1,000, two hours online at ₹1,200₹4,400Does the student concentrate well on screen?
Two home tutorsTwo hours each, at ₹1,000 and ₹1,400₹4,800Can your week hold four visits without clashing with school work?

The cheapest plan is only the right one if the tutor is strong in both subjects. The free demo is where you find out. Our demo class checklist lists what to watch, and our comparison of home and online tutors helps you decide which subject can move online.

Five lines to agree before the first paid class

  1. The weekly hours and the day. Write down the slot, so both sides plan around it.
  2. Cancellations. What happens if the family or the tutor cancels, and whether a missed class is made up.
  3. Exam-season hours. Whether extra classes before the SSLC, board or entrance exams are at the same rate.
  4. Payment timing. Monthly in advance, or after the classes are held.
  5. A review point. A date, such as after the next unit test, to decide whether the hours go up, down or stay the same.

How NXTutors can help

Tell us the class, board, subject and your locality, and we shortlist two or three matched tutors: those nearest you first, then others in your zone, then the rest of the city, then online tutors across India. You see each tutor's fee before the demo, the first class is a free demo, and switching tutor later is free. Tutors who join go through an ID check; see how we check tutors.

Start with maths home tutors in Thiruvananthapuram, science, physics or chemistry, or browse locality by locality on home tutors across Thiruvananthapuram. The NXTutors pricing guide explains the factors behind a quote. If you teach in the city, see tuition jobs in Thiruvananthapuram.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a home tutor cost in Thiruvananthapuram?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each tutor sets their own fee, and you see it before the free demo class.

How many hours of tuition a week does a Class 10 student need?

It depends on how the student is coping. A student on track in one subject often manages with about two hours a week, while one who is slipping or catching up may need three or four. Add the hours for each subject, then discuss the plan with the tutor at the free demo.

Is tuition for the Kerala State Board cheaper than for CBSE?

Not as a rule. The board rarely sets a rate on its own; the class, the subject and the tutor's experience matter more. Many tutors teach both the state syllabus and CBSE up to Class 10, which gives you more quotes to compare. Senior classes and IB or IGCSE usually sit higher in the band.

Does living far from the city centre make home tuition dearer?

The band is the same across the city, and each tutor sets their own fee. Where you live mainly decides how many tutors can reach you easily by bus, auto or train. Where no nearby tutor fits, NXTutors adds online tutors to the shortlist, which can widen your choice without adding travel.

Can we change tutor if the plan is not working?

Yes. Switching tutor later is free on NXTutors, and the new tutor also starts with a free demo. Before switching, check the plan itself: if the weekly hours were too few for the goal, a new tutor may not help unless the hours change too. Agree a review point at the start.
