Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Families in Thiruvananthapuram, the city hub says, split between Kerala's own state syllabus and the two national boards, CBSE and ICSE, and a tutor strong in one can be out of step with another. For CBSE, that means someone who works from NCERT and the current year's sample question papers, and who can reach your home through the city's busy junctions at a time that holds week after week. This page explains CBSE from Class 6 to Class 12 under the 2026-27 curriculum, how it differs in general from the state syllabus, the subjects parents usually ask about, how tutors reach each of the four zones and what to check in the free demo. On NXTutors, Class 10 CBSE and ICSE maths is Abhinandan Tiwary's subject and CBSE and ICSE science is Aaditya Kashyap's; this page draws on both.
According to the hub, CBSE is one of two national boards available here beside the state syllabus, and the hub asks families to tell us which board their child follows, plus the medium of instruction for the state syllabus. We have no reliable count of students on each board and give none. For a CBSE request, the details that change the shortlist are the class, the subjects, whether the child has moved from the state syllabus or from Malayalam medium, and whether entrance coaching runs alongside. Parents on IT shifts near Kazhakkoottam may also want a tutor who can switch to online on long workdays.
On the state syllabus, students take the SSLC examination after Class 10 and then the Higher Secondary examination across Classes 11 and 12, learning from state textbooks; the hub advises taking the pattern and timetable only from the state's official notices each year. CBSE works differently in ways a tutor must respect. Board papers are written on NCERT books. By CBSE's own account, about half of each secondary board paper is competency-focused: questions built on cases, sources, data and real situations. Every major subject sets aside school-assessed marks. CBSE also releases sample question papers with marking schemes before each exam season, and these should drive the tuition. A tutor who mixes state guides into CBSE lessons is teaching the wrong paper.
| Class | Who examines | Tutoring priority |
|---|---|---|
| 6 to 8 | The school; computational thinking and AI literacy run through subjects from 2026-27 | Number sense, fractions, early algebra; science ideas explained in the student's own words |
| 9 | The school, on a common 80-mark paper plus 20 internal; optional Advanced | Secure the common paper; consider Advanced only from strength |
| 10 | CBSE board (80) with school marks (20); a second exam to improve up to three subjects | Board-style answers, steady across all subjects |
| 11 | The school | The step up in stream subjects |
| 12 | CBSE board on the full syllabus, with practicals or internal marks | Revision, practical files, timed sample papers |
Class 9 maths and science now have one common standard for every student, with an annual paper of 80 marks lasting three hours in each. Students may add the optional Advanced paper in maths, science, both or neither; it lasts an hour, carries 25 marks and consists only of higher-order questions on extra content. It is kept out of the aggregate, but 50% or more is shown on the marksheet. The Basic and Standard maths split is being withdrawn, except for the 2026-27 Class 10 batch. A third language is compulsory for the transition batches; the school assesses it, with no board paper, and it must be passed.
Since 2026, Class 10 has two board exams. Everyone sits the first. A student who passes may return for the second to raise marks in a maximum of three subjects chosen from science, maths, social science and the languages; one who missed three or more subjects in the first exam cannot. Each major subject combines an 80-mark board paper with 20 school marks, and 33% is the pass mark. See the Class 10 maths preparation and Class 10 science notes posts.
In the senior curriculum, physics, chemistry and biology are each split 70 theory and 30 practical. Maths, or applied maths instead, is 80 and 20; so are accountancy, economics and business studies. In Class 12 the board paper tests the complete Class 12 syllabus, and CBSE expects more application questions set in real contexts. Where entrance coaching runs in parallel, a board tutor should guard the board marks: full NCERT answers, diagrams and units, and a current practical file. For entrance-led help, see JEE home tutors in Thiruvananthapuram and NEET home tutors in Thiruvananthapuram, and the Class 12 physics strategies post.
Ask the tutor to describe a typical lesson before the demo; the answer tells you a lot. Look for something like this. Ten minutes reviewing the week at school and the homework set last time. Thirty to forty minutes on a single chapter: the NCERT text first, read closely, then the exemplar problems and at least one question in CBSE's competency style, where the student must work out which idea applies. The rest of the hour on writing, with two or three answers produced in full and checked against the official marking scheme. Corrections should cover how the answer is laid out, not only whether it is right. When the student's school or home language is Malayalam, a tutor who can switch languages to explain, then insist on precise English for the written answer, saves time.
Some children join CBSE from the state syllabus in middle school; others switch for Class 11. Either way, the subject knowledge usually survives the move. What changes is the book, the questions and, for many, the language of written work. A sensible first month: week one, list the topics already covered on the old syllabus and find them in NCERT; weeks two and three, work through NCERT's in-text questions and exemplar problems on those chapters; week four, attempt a short set of sample-paper questions under time and mark them with the scheme. From then on, add one case-based or source-based question to every lesson. Parents can help by asking the school early for the internal assessment calendar, since those marks begin counting straight away.
Maths and science lead requests up to Class 10. In Classes 11 and 12, they follow the stream: physics, chemistry and maths, or biology and chemistry, with accountancy and economics for commerce.
Our reference page how the CBSE board works covers each stage's marking.
| Zone | How tutors arrive | Slot advice |
|---|---|---|
| Kowdiar and Pattom, e.g. Pattom or Vellayambalam | Bus or auto via Pattom, Vellayambalam or Kesavadasapuram | After the evening office rush at those junctions |
| Peroorkada and Vattiyoorkavu, e.g. Peroorkada | Buses toward East Fort and along MC Road | Allow a buffer around the Peroorkada junction |
| Ulloor and Kazhakkoottam, e.g. Kazhakkoottam | Buses along NH 66 or Kazhakuttam railway station | Around IT shift changes, or weekends |
| Thycaud and Karamana, e.g. Thycaud or Poojappura | The easiest zone by public transport, near Thampanoor and East Fort | Evenings after office hours |
Tell us the junction you live nearest to, since each draws on different bus routes and so on different tutors. In Karamana's older streets, a tutor who comes on foot or by scooter is easiest, so agree in advance where a two-wheeler can be parked. Every area is on our Thiruvananthapuram home tuition page, and the Thiruvananthapuram tuition guide has more.
For younger children and for maths, a home tutor is usually the better choice, and the city's compact bus network helps. Online sessions suit IT-shift households near Kazhakkoottam on long workdays, and senior students who need a particular specialist. Online maths and science only work when the tutor sees the written working live. In gated villa communities and apartment projects along NH 66, arrange a standing entry for the tutor in the first week.
We send two or three matched tutors, each fee visible before the demo, and a later switch is free. Tutors who join go through an ID check before their profiles are marked Verified.

For a Thiruvananthapuram student, CBSE board papers are written on NCERT books, while the Kerala state syllabus uses state textbooks with the SSLC and Higher Secondary examinations. By CBSE's own account, about half of each secondary board paper is competency-focused, and every major subject keeps school-assessed marks. A tutor who mixes state guides into CBSE lessons teaches the wrong paper.
For a Thiruvananthapuram family, the right board depends on the child, the medium and future plans rather than any single ranking. CBSE works from NCERT with competency-based questions; ICSE and the state syllabus each have their own books and papers. For a fuller comparison, see our CBSE, ICSE, IB or IGCSE guide.
From 2026-27, Thiruvananthapuram students in CBSE Class 9 take a common 80-mark paper in maths and science and may add an optional Advanced paper. It lasts an hour, carries 25 marks of higher-order questions, and stays out of the aggregate, though 50% or more is shown on the marksheet. Consider it only from strength.
Any Thiruvananthapuram CBSE Class 10 student who passes the compulsory first exam can sit the second exam to raise marks in up to three subjects. Those subjects come from science, maths, social science and the languages. A student who missed three or more subjects in the first exam cannot take the second.
A Thiruvananthapuram child switching from the state syllabus to CBSE needs about a month of structured bridging with a tutor. Week one lists topics already covered and finds them in NCERT; weeks two and three work through in-text and exemplar questions; week four tries timed sample-paper questions marked with the scheme. Ask the school early for its internal assessment calendar.
An hour of CBSE tuition in Thiruvananthapuram should move from review to one chapter to full written answers. Ten minutes go on the week at school and homework, thirty to forty on the NCERT text, exemplar problems and a competency-style question. The rest goes on two or three answers checked against the official marking scheme.
