WBBSE, CBSE or ICSE in Kolkata: Choosing and Switching Boards
In Kolkata a family can realistically choose between four school routes: the state route through the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) and the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE), CBSE, the CISCE's ICSE and ISC, and a smaller international group following the IB or Cambridge IGCSE. Each route tests children differently, keeps a different calendar and expects a different kind of written answer. None is better for every child, and moving between them is possible at the right points if you know the rules.
This guide lays the four routes side by side using only what the boards themselves publish on wbbse.wb.gov.in, wbchse.wb.gov.in, cbseacademic.nic.in and cbse.gov.in, and cisce.org. It then covers when and how a child can switch, and what to ask a tutor.
The four routes at a glance
| West Bengal (WBBSE, then WBCHSE) | CBSE | CISCE (ICSE, then ISC) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Class 10 exam | Madhyamik Pariksha, set by WBBSE | CBSE Class X board examination | ICSE examination |
| Class 12 exam | Higher Secondary, in four semesters run by WBCHSE | CBSE Class XII board examination | ISC examination |
| School year | WBBSE issues its academic calendar for the calendar year | Session begins in April | Academic year begins between mid-March and the first week of June |
| Marks split in main subjects | Internal formative evaluation in Classes 9–10; HS theory and practical passed separately | 80 board marks and 20 internal in Class 10 main subjects | 80% paper, 20% internal in Groups I and II at ICSE; Group III is 50:50 |
| Pass standard | HS: 30% in five subjects, two languages and three electives | 33% in a subject | ICSE: 33% a subject, pass in five including English |
The state route: Madhyamik, then Higher Secondary
WBBSE, which dates from 1951, runs the secondary years and the Madhyamik Pariksha at the end of Class 10, which the board calls a student's first public examination. In Classes 9 and 10, the board's 2026 calendar has every recognised school teach two languages, mathematics from the Ganit Prakash series, four subjects that each carry "and Environment" in their names (physical science, life science, history and geography), and one optional elective. Schools hold three summative evaluations, normally in the first weeks of April, August and December, alongside internal formative evaluation.
The board has already notified the routine for Madhyamik 2027: one subject a day from 15 to 25 February 2027, with fifteen minutes of reading time before each paper and the board keeping the right to change the schedule. Its first-language list runs from Bengali, English and Hindi to Nepali, Urdu, Santali and several others, so the medium of the exam is a real choice on this route.
From Class 11 the Council takes over. WBCHSE, set up under a 1975 Act, examines Higher Secondary in four semesters. Semesters I and III are multiple choice; Semesters II and IV are written. The school conducts the first two, and the Council holds the last two at examination centres, normally with the multiple-choice semesters in September and the written ones in March. A student takes two languages and three compulsory electives from a single subject set, with an optional fourth elective, and no calculator is allowed in any semester paper.
One rule in the WBBSE calendar is worth knowing before you hire anyone: a teacher at a recognised school must not take private tuition for personal gain. Your child's home tutor on the state route should therefore come from outside the school. Our West Bengal board tutors in Kolkata page covers the semester papers subject by subject.
CBSE: one national pattern
CBSE's 2026-27 curriculum on cbseacademic.nic.in sets the Class 10 main subjects at 80 marks for the board paper and 20 for internal assessment, with 33% needed to pass, and says roughly 50% of questions in the board paper test competencies, through cases, sources and real-world application. From 2026 CBSE also runs two board examinations for Class 10. Every student must sit the first; the optional second sitting allows a fresh attempt at a maximum of three of science, maths, social science and the languages. In Class 12, physics, chemistry and biology carry 70 theory marks and 30 practical, while mathematics, accountancy and economics are 80 and 20.
CBSE's appeal is portability: the same NCERT-based syllabus applies wherever a family moves next, and Class 11–12 content lines up with the national entrance tests. Its demand is answer style, since competency questions reward applying a concept to an unfamiliar situation. See CBSE home tutors in Kolkata for the papers in detail.
CISCE: ICSE at Class 10, ISC at Class 12
The CISCE regulations on cisce.org ask every ICSE candidate to take at least six subjects. Everyone takes the Group I trio of English, a second language, and History, Civics and Geography. From Group II a candidate picks two or three, such as Mathematics, Science, Economics, Commercial Studies or Environmental Science; Groups I and II are marked 80% on the paper and 20% internally. Group III adds one or two applied subjects, such as Computer Applications or Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, marked half by paper and half internally. To pass, a candidate needs 33% in five or more subjects, one of them English, and the school's pass grade for SUPW and Community Service.
The ICSE year is long on paper. In the 2026 timetable, English alone had two papers, science was written as three separate two-hour papers in Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and the examinations ran from 17 February to 30 March. ISC then asks for English plus three, four or five electives, with no change of subject after 15 September of the Class 11 year. Kolkata has a long familiarity with this route, and our ICSE and ISC home tutors in Kolkata page goes through the subjects.
IB and IGCSE in brief
A smaller group of Kolkata schools offer international programmes. The Cambridge IGCSE is a two-year course usually finished at about sixteen, with many subjects offered at Core and Extended levels; the IB Diploma Programme covers the last two school years with six subjects, at least three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Both run on a different calendar, with their main papers in May. If you are considering them, our IGCSE tutors and IB tutors in Kolkata pages set out the subjects.
Switching boards: what the rules allow
Most switches happen at two points: after Class 10, when a student chooses a Class 11 course, and occasionally before Class 9. The rules differ by direction.
| The move | What the board says | What the child has to adjust to |
|---|---|---|
| ICSE, CBSE or IGCSE into WBCHSE Higher Secondary at Class 11 | The Council's list of equivalent boards includes CBSE, the CISCE and the Cambridge IGCSE | Multiple-choice Semester I in the first September; no calculator; the Council's own textbooks and terms |
| Madhyamik or CBSE into ISC at Class 11 | ISC subjects are fixed by 15 September of Class 11, and a Class 12 subject must have been studied in Class 11 | Longer written answers in English, project work, wider reading in every subject |
| Madhyamik or ICSE into CBSE at Class 11 | Admission is decided by the receiving school; ask it in writing for its rules and deadlines | NCERT books, competency-style questions, 70:30 split in the sciences |
| Into ICSE during Class 9 or 10 | Candidates register in Class IX; admission to Class IX is regularised by 31 July; first-time entry needs 75% attendance in each year of the two-year course at a CISCE school, and a Class 10 subject must have been studied in Class 9 | A late move into ICSE is rarely possible, so decide before Class 9 begins |
The CISCE regulations add one reassurance: for admission to the ISC Class 11 course, every combination of ICSE subjects is accepted. And because ICSE subject choices cannot change after 15 September of the Class 9 year, the Group II and Group III picks deserve as much thought as the board itself.
Which route suits which child?
The boards do not rank themselves, and neither should anyone selling tuition. These are the questions that tend to decide it:
- Language of thought. A child who reads and argues most comfortably in Bengali may do their strongest work on the state route, where the exam can be written in that medium. A child who writes fluent English may find ICSE's long answers natural.
- Kind of test. HS semesters reward speed and exact recall in the multiple-choice papers; CBSE rewards applying ideas; ICSE and ISC reward thorough written working.
- Plans after school. Engineering aspirants in the state sit WBJEE whichever board they follow; national entrance tests sit closest to the NCERT syllabus. See our WBJEE preparation plan.
- Likelihood of moving city. CBSE and CISCE schools exist across India; the state route is West Bengal's own.
A checklist before you decide
- Download the current syllabus for Class 9 or Class 11 from the board's own website, not a guidebook.
- Ask the school which Group II and Group III subjects (ICSE), which subject set (HS) or which electives (CBSE) it actually offers.
- For a Class 11 move, list the entrance exams your child may sit and check that the subject combination keeps them open.
- Note the deadlines: 31 July for regularising Class 9 admission in ICSE, 15 September for subject changes in ICSE Class 9 and ISC Class 11.
What to ask a tutor about your child's board
A tutor who teaches more than one board helps after a switch, but only if they know the current rules. In a free demo, ask:
- "Which board's papers have you taught in the last two years?" The answer should name the exam, not just the subject.
- "How is my child's paper marked?" Listen for the 80:20 or 70:30 split, step marks, or the MCQ and written semesters.
- "What changes first for a student who has just switched?" A good tutor names answer style, medium or exam format, not only the syllabus.
Tutors who join NXTutors go through an ID check, and the Verified badge appears only after the team's review; our page on how we check tutors explains what that covers and what it does not.
How NXTutors can help
Tell us the board your child follows now, the one they are moving to if any, the class, the subjects and your neighbourhood, and you get two or three matched tutors, nearest first, for lessons at home where tutors can reach you or online from anywhere in India. Each fee is on the profile before you book; the first lesson is a free demo, and changing tutor later costs nothing. Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.
For classes, see Class 9, Class 10 and Class 11 tutors in Kolkata; for the commerce stream, commerce home tutors; and for subjects taught over video, online tutors in Kolkata. ICSE families in the board year can follow our ICSE Class 10 year plan for Kolkata, and the Kolkata fees guide helps with a budget. Frequently asked questions
Can a Madhyamik student join an ISC or CBSE school for Class 11?
Yes, a Madhyamik student can join an ISC or CBSE school at Class 11, the usual point to switch, subject to the receiving school's own rules. For ISC, subjects must be settled by 15 September of the Class 11 year. Expect the biggest change in answer style: longer written English answers for ISC, competency-style questions for CBSE.
Does WBCHSE accept students from ICSE, CBSE or IGCSE for Higher Secondary?
Yes, WBCHSE accepts students from ICSE, CBSE and IGCSE, since the Council's published list of boards treated as equivalent for Higher Secondary includes CBSE, the CISCE and the Cambridge IGCSE. The adjustment is in the testing: Semester I is entirely multiple choice, no calculator is allowed in any semester paper, and answers follow the Council's textbooks.
Can my child move into ICSE in Class 10?
A move into ICSE in Class 10 is rarely possible, because CISCE registers ICSE candidates in Class 9 and regularises Class 9 admission by 31 July. First-time entry also needs 75% attendance in each year of the two-year course at a CISCE school, and a Class 10 subject must have been studied in Class 9, so plan any move before Class 9.
Is one Kolkata board easier for JEE or WBJEE?
No Kolkata board settles a JEE or WBJEE result in advance, and the study plan matters more than the board. WBJEE's syllabus follows the Class 11 and 12 curricula of recognised boards, so every route can prepare for it. CBSE sits closest to NCERT, ISC builds careful written working, and the HS multiple-choice semesters build speed with options.
Do Kolkata tutors charge differently for WBBSE, CBSE and ICSE?
Kolkata tutors do not, as a rule, charge differently for WBBSE, CBSE or ICSE, because the class and depth needed matter more than the board. Each tutor sets their own fee. Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. You see each fee before the free demo.
Can a teacher at my child's West Bengal board school also be the home tutor?
No, a teacher at a WBBSE-recognised school must not take private tuition for personal gain, under a rule in the board's academic calendar. A home tutor for a child on the West Bengal state route should therefore come from outside the school. Raise this in the first conversation, before the free demo is booked, so the shortlist fits.
When must ICSE and ISC subject choices be fixed?
ICSE subject choices cannot change after 15 September of the Class 9 year, and ISC subjects cannot change after 15 September of the Class 11 year, under CISCE rules. That makes the ICSE Group II and Group III picks as important as the board itself. For admission to the ISC Class 11 course, every combination of ICSE subjects is accepted.
