Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

In Kolkata the word "English" covers several different subjects. An ICSE student writes two separate English papers, an ISC student two longer ones, a CBSE student one paper with literature at its centre, and a Higher Secondary student on the West Bengal board takes English as a language paper, often after years of study in Bengali medium. A tutor who is right for one of them can be wrong for the next. NXTutors asks for the exact paper, the language your child is most at ease in and your locality, then sends two or three English tutors who can reach you or teach online. You see each fee on the shortlist, and the first class with the tutor you pick is a free demo.
The class number is not enough for us to find the right person. Tell us the board and, for the senior years, whether the school enters your child for language, literature or both. This is how the papers compare.
| Course | Classes | Set by | Assessment in brief |
|---|---|---|---|
| English Language and Literature in English | 9 and 10 | CISCE (ICSE) | Two papers of two hours and 80 marks each, plus 20 internal marks for each |
| English (801): Language and Literature | 11 and 12 | CISCE (ISC) | Two three-hour theory papers of 80, each with 20 marks of project work |
| English Language and Literature | 9 and 10 | CBSE | An 80-mark board paper in which literature is worth 40; 20 marks in school |
| English Core | 11 and 12 | CBSE | 80 in the paper, 20 for listening, speaking and a project |
| English at Madhyamik and Higher Secondary | 10; 11 and 12 | WBBSE; WBCHSE | A language paper set by the state boards; follow their textbooks and notices |
| IGCSE First Language or Second Language; IB Language A | 9 and 10; 11 and 12 | Cambridge; IB | Unseen-text analysis, extended writing, and a speaking component |
We keep our notes on the state papers general. The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education runs Madhyamik and the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education runs the Higher Secondary course, and each publishes its own English syllabus, textbooks and question pattern. A tutor for these students should bring the prescribed books and the boards' latest notices to the first class instead of a CBSE workbook.
CISCE has a long and strong following in Kolkata, and its English asks for more sustained writing than any other board here. In the ICSE language paper a student plans and writes a composition of about 300 to 350 words, a letter, a notice with a matching e-mail, and answers on an unseen passage of about 500 words that ends in a summary, before a compulsory grammar question. The literature paper covers a play, short stories and poems from the set texts. Listening and speaking make up the 20 internal marks on the language side.
ISC raises the length and the stakes. The composition grows to 400 to 450 words, chosen from six topics that range from narrative and descriptive to argumentative, discursive and a short story, and the language paper adds directed writing and a proposal in CISCE's format. The literature paper asks about style as well as content, so a student has to say how a poem works, not only what it says.
What helps most is a weekly timed piece, marked within days. A useful rhythm for a Class 9 or Class 11 student:
Our notes on ICSE Class 10 English papers and on ISC Class 12 English go question by question.
Under the 2026-27 curriculum, the Class 10 board paper gives 20 marks to unseen reading, 20 to writing and grammar and 40 to literature from First Flight and Footprints without Feet. The writing tasks are a formal letter and an analytical paragraph based on a chart, map or graph. Because half the paper is literature, a Kolkata student who has read every chapter can still drop marks by writing answers that are too long, too thin or off the question.
By Class 12, grammar has left the paper. English Core then carries 22 marks of reading, 18 of creative writing and 40 of literature from Flamingo and Vistas, and school-based marks come from listening, speaking and a project. The literature answers get longer and ask a student to link themes across chapters. A good tutor practises exactly that: one answer each week that draws on two texts, checked for length and for evidence.
State-board schools in the city teach in Bengali, English and other media, and many students change medium or board at Class 9 or Class 11. These students usually understand far more than they can write. A sensible first month with a tutor who can explain in Bengali where needed:
As confidence grows, the tutor should switch the lessons fully into English. Say in your request whether you want a tutor who can use Bengali, Hindi or another language during this bridge.
A smaller group of Kolkata families follow Cambridge IGCSE or the IB. For IGCSE, check whether the school has entered your child for First Language English (0500), which rewards analysis of a writer's language and extended composition, or English as a Second Language (0510 or 0511), which tests reading, writing and listening for learners of English. The preparation is different, so the tutor must know which. IB Language A students face unseen non-literary texts, a comparative literary essay and a 15-minute individual oral; a tutor can rehearse the oral and comment on plans, while coursework stays the student's own. Specialists are fewer, so many of these families use an online tutor, and the national English home tutor guide sets out both programmes.
Metro lines, suburban trains and a few slow roads decide who can keep a weekly slot at your door. Six neighbourhoods from six zones show the range; the Kolkata home tuition page covers every locality.
| Neighbourhood | Way in | What to share |
|---|---|---|
| Lake Gardens | Rabindra Sarobar on the Blue Line, or Lake Gardens station on the Budge Budge branch | Whether the building asks visitors to sign in; roads by the lake fill in the evening peak |
| Golf Green | Rabindra Sarobar or Mahanayak Uttam Kumar, then an auto | Which low-rise block; often the family or a caretaker lets the tutor in |
| Thakurpukur | Thakurpukur station on the Purple Line, on Diamond Harbour Road | An afternoon or weekend-morning time, as the main road slows at the evening peak |
| Santoshpur | Satyajit Ray or Jyotirindra Nandi on the Orange Line; Jadavpur or Baghajatin by train | A para name and landmark; complexes near the bypass may want the tutor's name |
| Bangur Avenue | Bidhannagar Road or Patipukur stations, or buses on Jessore Road and VIP Road | A margin around the evening airport traffic when fixing the hour |
| Sovabazar | Sovabazar Sutanuti on the Blue Line, or Sovabazar Ahiritola on the Circular Railway | Plans for Durga Puja weeks, when the lanes fill with visitors |
The zone guides go further: Ballygunge, Gariahat and Alipore, Behala and New Alipore and North Kolkata each list the stops and the quiet hours for their neighbourhoods. The South Kolkata tuition guide and the North Kolkata and Howrah guide compare the two halves of the city.
English suits online teaching better than most subjects once a child can read, because essays can be shared and marked on screen. Home visits still win in three Kolkata situations: a young child learning to read, who needs a tutor watching every word; a student changing medium, who gains from a tutor sitting beside the notebook; and families in neighbourhoods such as Golf Green or Lake Gardens where a metro stop is close and a regular evening slot is easy to keep. Online works well for ISC, IGCSE and IB specialists who may live across the river or in another city, and for the weeks before Durga Puja, when a trip through crowded lanes can swallow the lesson. Many families mix the two. Our article on home or online tutoring weighs the choice.
Have a marked school answer or composition ready, and watch for these:

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each tutor sets a personal rate. For English the figure moves with the class, the paper, the tutor's experience with it, the journey to your door at your hour and how many sessions you book. Every shortlisted fee is shown before the demo, and the Kolkata home tuition fees article explains the pattern.
Send the class, the paper by name (ICSE, ISC, CBSE, Madhyamik, Higher Secondary, IGCSE or IB), the skill that worries you most, the language your child is comfortable in, your neighbourhood with a landmark, your days and times, and a budget. We reply with two or three matched tutors and their fees. Tutors who join go through an ID check before their profile is marked Verified. NXTutors works from Sector 66, Gurugram, and teaches online across India. Families who also need maths or science help in Kolkata can start from those pages, and English teachers living in the city can find open requests on the Kolkata tuition jobs page.

Yes. We match tutors who teach both CISCE English papers, language and literature, and who practise timed compositions, letters, notices, summaries and ISC proposals. Tell us the class and exam year, and whether your child struggles more with writing length, grammar or literature answers, so the shortlist fits that need.
Yes. We look for tutors who work from the West Bengal boards' prescribed English textbooks and follow the boards' own notices for the paper. Our advice on those papers stays general, so ask at the demo how the tutor uses past papers and plans the year.
Yes. A good tutor starts with reading aloud, a personal word list and fixing the student's own sentences, then moves to paragraphs and full answers. Say in your request if you want a tutor who can explain in Bengali or Hindi during the first months.
We match across nine zones: Ballygunge and Alipore, Tollygunge to Garia, Behala, Kasba and the southern bypass, Salt Lake, New Town and Rajarhat, Lake Town to Baguiati, north Kolkata and Howrah. Where nobody suitable can reach you at your hour, we suggest online or mixed lessons.
For most students who already read fluently, yes. Essays and literature answers can be shared and marked on screen, and online widens the choice of ISC, IGCSE and IB specialists. Young children learning to read, and students changing medium, usually do better with a tutor at home.
Once or twice a week suits most students, with one written piece set between sessions so the tutor has work to mark. From the half-yearly exam onwards, add a timed section of a specimen or sample paper every week or two, marked against the board's scheme.
