English tutor jobs in Kolkata

CISCE has a long and strong following in Kolkata, and with it comes a particular kind of English tuition: timed composition, close reading of prescribed literature and long, well-organised answers. ICSE students sit two English papers in Class 10 and ISC students two three-hour papers in Class 12. Parents here often judge a school by its English, and they judge an English tutor the same way.

Who asks for english tutors in Kolkata

ICSE English in Classes 9 and 10 is English Language and Literature in English, two papers of two hours and 80 marks each, with 20 internal marks for each. ISC English (801) in Classes 11 and 12 is two three-hour theory papers of 80, each with 20 marks of project work. Both reward sustained, timed writing and literature answers that go beyond summary, so families ask for a tutor who sets and marks compositions every week, not one who explains the text and stops there.

CBSE English Language and Literature in Classes 9 and 10 is an 80-mark board paper with literature worth 40 and 20 marks in school; Class 12 English Core is 80 in the paper and 20 for listening, speaking and a project. On the state route, WBBSE sets English for the Madhyamik and WBCHSE for the Higher Secondary, each with its own syllabus, textbooks and question pattern. English is a first-language option for some Madhyamik students and the second language when the first is Bengali or another language, so the level a student needs varies. A tutor for state-board students brings the prescribed books and the boards' latest notices to the first class instead of a CBSE workbook.

International families ask for Cambridge IGCSE First Language or Second Language, or IB Language A, which demand unseen-text analysis, extended writing and a speaking component. Students moving from ICSE or IGCSE into the Higher Secondary meet multiple-choice semesters for the first time and sometimes want help adjusting.

Where in Kolkata the work is

English suits a mixed week, with reading and discussion at home and written feedback online. Ballygunge, Gariahat & Alipore is a natural base for ICSE and ISC work: the Blue Line stops at Netaji Bhavan, Jatin Das Park, Kalighat and Rabindra Sarobar, and the Sealdah South lines serve Ballygunge, Dhakuria and Lake Gardens. Older houses need the right floor and bell, and buildings with a staffed gate want your name in advance.

Salt Lake's lettered blocks of plotted houses usually have no gate register; the block letter, house number and nearest avenue are enough, and early evenings or weekends avoid the roads towards Sector V. New Town and Rajarhat complexes want your name, phone, tower and flat before the first class, and with the Orange Line stations still being built, tutors already living there or teaching online are the practical match.

Puja season matters for English as much as any subject. When Gariahat and the heritage lanes fill, a tutor who moves that fortnight's sessions online, with compositions submitted and marked on screen, keeps a Class 10 or 12 student writing every week.

What families in Kolkata expect

  • Name the papers you teach: ICSE, ISC 801, CBSE, Madhyamik or HS English, IGCSE First or Second Language, IB Language A.
  • Set and mark timed compositions each week, to the length and format the board expects.
  • Teach prescribed literature with answers that analyse, not just summarise.
  • Bring the state boards' textbooks and notices for Madhyamik and HS students.
  • Pitch the level to whether English is the student's first or second language.
  • Support ISC and CBSE project work as guidance, never authorship.
  • Keep a fixed slot and offer online marking during the Puja weeks.
  • Help students moving from ICSE or IGCSE into HS adjust to multiple-choice semesters.

How to get picked

Kolkata parents read English profiles closely, so let your method show. Explain what happens to a student's composition after they write it: marked against the board's criteria, returned with three specific corrections and a model paragraph. Name your boards precisely, especially ICSE and ISC, and the zones along your metro line.

At the demo, give a short timed writing task from the student's own syllabus and mark it with the parent watching. Point to one structure issue, one language issue and one idea that could be developed. Then outline how you would build towards the next school assessment. Leads, credits and how you get paid are explained in the modules below.

Some Kolkata families also want English paired with history or geography for ICSE, or with a second language. If you teach both well, list each subject with its board and class so the match is accurate.

Joining, leads and pay

Joining is free

Applying, onboarding, building your profile, the ID check and receiving matched requests on the Free plan cost nothing. The Free plan gives you 160 lead credits every month.

Paid plans are optional

Pro, Premium and Featured are optional platform subscriptions: more visibility, AI tools and more lead credits. They are never a fee to apply for a tuition. See tutor plans.

How leads and credits work

A family request that fits your subjects, classes, board, areas and hours reaches your dashboard. Opening the family's contact details uses lead credits, and the credit price is shown on the request before you open it. At most 5 tutors can open one request, and a request stays open for 7 days. Credit packs are there if you need more.

How you get paid

You set your own fee. When a family pays for classes through NXTutors, you receive 50% of the fee for home tuition in the first month and the full fee after that, and 70% of the fee for online tuition every month. Payments are held for 7 days, then paid out weekly. How you get paid.

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.

Questions from tutors

How are ICSE and ISC English examined?

ICSE has two papers of two hours and 80 marks each, with 20 internal marks each. ISC has two three-hour papers of 80, each with 20 marks of project work. Regulations are on cisce.org.

Do Madhyamik students want English tutors?

Some do, especially where English is the second language. Bring the WBBSE textbooks and follow the board's question pattern rather than another board's workbook.

Is English tuition in Kolkata mostly home or online?

Often mixed: reading and discussion at home, writing feedback online. Younger children usually do better with home sessions.

Which areas send ICSE and ISC English requests?

We do not publish counts. CISCE has a wide following across the city, from Ballygunge and Alipore to Salt Lake and Behala. The live list on this page shows current requests, if any.

Can I teach English to IGCSE and IB students here?

Yes. A smaller group follow IB or Cambridge IGCSE. Know whether the student has the First or Second Language entry, or the IB Language A course and level.

What if I teach at a West Bengal school?

WBBSE's calendar repeats a state rule that teachers at recognised schools must not take private tuition for personal gain. Check the board's rules that apply to you before taking students.
