Science tutor jobs in Kolkata

A Bengali-medium Class 10 student in Kolkata writes science answers with the Bengali terms used in the textbook. A tutor may explain in English, but if the student practises only in English, the Madhyamik paper will feel foreign. That one detail tells you a lot about science tuition here: board and medium matter as much as subject knowledge.

Who asks for science tutors in Kolkata

On the state route, WBBSE runs Classes 9 and 10. Its academic calendar names Physical Science and Environment and Life Science and Environment as separate subject slots, with environmental themes running through the books rather than sitting in a separate paper. In the Madhyamik, maths and the two sciences come late in the exam fortnight, after the language and social science papers, so science revision has to be finished before the exam season starts rather than squeezed between papers.

The WBBSE school year runs by calendar year, not from April. Three summative evaluations are normally held in the first weeks of April, August and December, and Classes 9 and 10 also have internal formative evaluation. A tutor who knows the school's summative dates and plans revision two or three weeks ahead of each is easy for parents to value; the Puja holidays between the second and third summatives are when a written plan or a few online sessions keep a child on track.

ICSE science, with its long and strong following in Kolkata, rewards precise definitions, labelled diagrams and well-organised long answers in physics, chemistry and biology. CBSE schools start their session in April and build on NCERT, testing against sample papers and marking schemes. Up to Class 10, one tutor for all three strands is the usual request.

Where in Kolkata the work is

Science lessons are after school, so short trips win. Tollygunge, Jadavpur and Garia is a Blue Line zone from Mahanayak Uttam Kumar to Kavi Nazrul, with suburban stations at Jadavpur, Baghajatin and Garia; homes are mostly family houses in the lanes with straight-to-the-door visits, though the 8B crossing in Jadavpur gets crowded at college and office hours. North Kolkata, on the Blue Line at Shyambazar, Sovabazar Sutanuti, Girish Park and Belgachia, is mostly family houses or small buildings at street level with no gate formality.

Lake Town, Dum Dum & Baguiati is among the easiest places in the city to reach by train or metro, with the Blue and Yellow Lines and the Sealdah suburban lines at Dum Dum, though Baguiati has no metro station of its own yet and addresses there spread over several sub-localities off VIP Road. Ask for an exact landmark, and leave a margin around the evening peak.

In Kasba & EM Bypass South, the Orange Line along the bypass from Kavi Subhash to Beleghata is the newest way in; families near the bypass often live in complexes that register visitors, so ask for a standing entry, while Patuli homes are found by block and plot number.

What families in Kolkata expect

  • Teach from the book and medium the child uses: WBBSE Physical and Life Science in Bengali or English, ICSE school texts or NCERT.
  • Have Bengali-medium students practise answers with the textbook's Bengali terms.
  • Finish Madhyamik science revision before the exam season, since the sciences come late in the fortnight.
  • Plan around the school's three summatives and the Puja holidays.
  • For ICSE, insist on exact definitions and labelled diagrams.
  • Cover all three strands to Class 10 and notice maths gaps in physics questions.
  • Keep a fixed after-school slot along your metro line.

How to get picked

Your profile should show board and medium first: "Madhyamik Physical and Life Science, Bengali and English medium, Classes 8 to 10" or "ICSE science, Classes 6 to 10". Add the metro line you live on and the zones it gives you. Kolkata parents value a tutor who knows the summative calendar, so mention that you plan revision around it.

At the demo, pick one recent chapter, ask the student to explain it, then write a short answer in the exam's medium. Show the parent the gap between understanding and written marks, and outline a plan to the next summative. The modules below explain leads, credits and how you get paid.

One more point earns trust in Kolkata. WBBSE's calendar repeats a state rule from 2018 that a teacher at a recognised school must not take private tuition for personal gain, so many parents look for a home tutor from outside the school, which also keeps the feedback independent of the classroom. If you teach in a school yourself, read the board's published rules before taking students; if you do not, your independence is a quiet advantage. Either way, be ready to explain how your plan fits the school's own summatives rather than competing with them.

Joining, leads and pay

Joining is free

Applying, onboarding, building your profile, the ID check and receiving matched requests on the Free plan cost nothing. The Free plan gives you 160 lead credits every month.

Paid plans are optional

Pro, Premium and Featured are optional platform subscriptions: more visibility, AI tools and more lead credits. They are never a fee to apply for a tuition. See tutor plans.

How leads and credits work

A family request that fits your subjects, classes, board, areas and hours reaches your dashboard. Opening the family's contact details uses lead credits, and the credit price is shown on the request before you open it. At most 5 tutors can open one request, and a request stays open for 7 days. Credit packs are there if you need more.

How you get paid

You set your own fee. When a family pays for classes through NXTutors, you receive 50% of the fee for home tuition in the first month and the full fee after that, and 70% of the fee for online tuition every month. Payments are held for 7 days, then paid out weekly. How you get paid.

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.
