The IB Diploma, over two years, combines coursework and final papers in six subjects, each graded out of 7, with the Extended Essay, TOK and CAS in the core. Mathematics comes as Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation at SL or HL. A tutor guides an IA or Extended Essay but never writes it, and prepares from the subject guides on ibo.org. In the MYP, each of the eight subject groups is marked against its own criteria, with a personal project the IB sizes at around 25 hours; in the PYP, nothing is externally examined.

Cambridge IGCSE rewards command words, tier choice and past-paper practice, and some students take the Pearson Edexcel version instead, so confirm which before the demo. A distinct Kolkata request is the bridge: students moving from IGCSE into the state's Higher Secondary or into ISC. The Higher Secondary council lists Cambridge IGCSE among the boards it treats as equivalent for entry, but its Semester I is all one-mark multiple choice and no calculator is allowed, so IGCSE students need to rebuild mental and written arithmetic and get used to rapid recall. Many IB and IGCSE families have arrived from another city or another board, and the first weeks with a tutor often go on the habits the new programme expects rather than on content: open questions, command terms and long written explanations.

International-school families are spread across the city, and specialists are few, so plan for travel and online together. New Town and Rajarhat are almost all gated complexes where the security desk wants your name, phone, tower and flat before the first class, and the Orange Line stations there are still under construction; a specialist already living there, or one who takes the Green Line to Sector V and a cab, is the practical match, and online sessions fill the gaps.

Ballygunge, Gariahat and Alipore are reachable on the Blue Line at Netaji Bhavan, Jatin Das Park, Kalighat and Rabindra Sarobar; buildings with a staffed gate want your name in advance. Salt Lake's plotted houses need only the block letter, house number and nearest avenue. Along the EM Bypass, complexes register visitors at the gate, so ask for a standing entry.

A weekly home session for long problem-solving or essay feedback, plus one online class for past-paper review, is a common arrangement for these families, and the online part keeps going through Puja weeks.

• Offer bridging support for IGCSE students moving to HS or ISC: rapid recall and calculation without a calculator.
• Offer hybrid weeks for families far from you.
• Teach command terms such as evaluate and justify explicitly to students new to the IB or IGCSE format.

Kolkata IB and IGCSE parents read profiles like CVs. Lead with the courses and levels you have taught recently, the exam sessions you have prepared students for and one honest line on internal assessment. If you can bridge students from IGCSE into HS or ISC, say so; it is a need specific to this city and few tutors mention it.

IB Diploma students work to school deadlines for internal assessments and the Extended Essay across two years, and IGCSE students sit exam series their schools announce; families usually look for help as a deadline or mock approaches. A tutor who lists one or two weekday evenings online and a weekend morning at home fits most of these families, and one who can explain the Higher Secondary or ISC format to a student about to switch is rarer still.
