Now taking on home, online and hybrid tutors · in Kolkata
Marks in Classes 1 to 5 tell a parent little; what matters is whether the basics are becoming automatic. Kolkata parents who call a primary tutor have usually seen it slip: reading still word by word in Class 3, fingers out for simple sums, or a change of school, board or medium that left a child catching up with books the class began earlier. In this city, medium is the detail that matters most, because a child may be learning in Bengali, English or both.
No open primary (class 1–5) requests in Kolkata right now. New family requests appear here as they come in; join now so they can reach you.
NXTutors is free to join for primary tutors. Choose home, online or both, list the neighbourhoods you can walk or ride to, and set your own fee, which families see before a free demo. This page covers what primary families in Kolkata ask for, how the city's lanes and blocks shape visiting, and how to win the parent's confidence.
The usual signs are steady ones: slow, word-by-word reading in Class 3, or a child who reads the words but cannot say what happened; counting on fingers for simple addition in Class 3 or 4, or freezing when a sum appears as a word problem; homework that regularly takes more than an hour and ends in tears; the same teacher note term after term. One sign on its own may pass with a little extra attention; two or three lasting more than a term are a good reason for two or three sessions a week.
Kolkata's boards shape materials and timing. WBBSE-linked schools follow the state's books, in Bengali or English medium, and the state school year runs from January rather than April, with free textbooks handed out at the start of the year. CISCE schools, with their long following in the city, choose books for the early classes and tend to expect a high standard of English. CBSE schools start in April. A smaller group follow the IB Primary Years Programme, for children roughly 3 to 12, with inquiry units, the PYP exhibition and nothing externally examined.
Medium and language requests are common. Some parents want Bengali reading support for an English-medium child, others want English for a Bengali-medium child, and families arriving from other cities may need help with whichever language the new school expects. Be clear on your profile about the medium you teach in.
Kolkata suits short, frequent primary visits. North Kolkata's homes are mostly family houses or small buildings at street level with no gate formality, a short walk from Blue Line stations such as Shyambazar, Girish Park and Belgachia. In Tollygunge, Jadavpur and Garia, homes are mostly family houses in the lanes with straight-to-the-door visits. Salt Lake is plotted houses in lettered blocks, found by block letter, house number and nearest avenue.
Some areas take more planning. Behala homes are often reached by Purple Line plus a short auto, and New Alipore by its lettered blocks. In Baguiati and Kestopur, addresses spread over several sub-localities off VIP Road, so ask for an exact landmark. New Town and Rajarhat are almost all gated complexes; a tutor already living there is the natural fit for after-school primary work, and the security desk will want your name, phone, tower and flat.
Online has a small place for Classes 4 and 5: reading discussion, mental maths and feedback on a short composition. It also helps in Puja weeks, when the heritage lanes fill and a few online sessions keep a young child's routine going.
Primary parents in Kolkata are inviting you into their home every week, so they look for patience, punctuality and a clear routine. Describe your hour on your profile and name the medium you teach in. List the paras, blocks or stations you can reach on foot or by a short ride; a tutor who lives three lanes away is often chosen over one with a longer list of qualifications.
At the demo, hear the child read a page and retell it, try three sums of rising difficulty and look through the school diary. Tell the parent one strength and one gap in plain words and suggest a four-week plan. Leads, credits and how you get paid are explained in the modules below.
For the demo, bring a short reader at the child's level in the right medium, a few number tasks with objects and a notebook for your observations, and ask for the school diary and the term's book list.
Applying, onboarding, building your profile, the ID check and receiving matched requests on the Free plan cost nothing. The Free plan gives you 160 lead credits every month.
Pro, Premium and Featured are optional platform subscriptions: more visibility, AI tools and more lead credits. They are never a fee to apply for a tuition. See tutor plans.
A family request that fits your subjects, classes, board, areas and hours reaches your dashboard. Opening the family's contact details uses lead credits, and the credit price is shown on the request before you open it. At most 5 tutors can open one request, and a request stays open for 7 days. Credit packs are there if you need more.
You set your own fee. When a family pays for classes through NXTutors, you receive 50% of the fee for home tuition in the first month and the full fee after that, and 70% of the fee for online tuition every month. Payments are held for 7 days, then paid out weekly. How you get paid.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.
Both. Some want English support for a Bengali-medium child and others the reverse. State the medium you teach in on your profile.
WBBSE's calendar runs by calendar year, with books in January; CBSE and CISCE schools start in April. Ask the school for the term's syllabus.
Mostly home for Classes 1 to 3. By Classes 4 and 5, some reading discussion and mental maths can move online, especially in Puja weeks.
A smaller group do, for number facts, reading stamina and clear short writing. Nothing in the PYP is externally examined, so do not drill for a test.
Yes. List the zones you want; home requests are matched to them and the closest tutors are shortlisted first.
Teach the skill and watch the child start, but leave the work to the child; otherwise the school sees work the child cannot yet do.
