WBCHSE runs Higher Secondary in four semesters. In physics, each MCQ semester (I or III) is 35 one-mark questions and each written semester (II or IV) 35 marks of short and descriptive answers, so theory is 70 per class. No calculator is allowed in any semester. Practical and project work is examined at the student's own institution before Semester II and Semester IV, and theory and practical must be passed separately. A student must clear Semesters I and II before moving to Semester III. Students joining HS from ICSE, CBSE or IGCSE are used to long written answers and meet an all-MCQ Semester I first.

ISC physics, with CISCE's long following in the city, includes practical work and a project. CBSE Class 12 physics is a 70-mark theory paper with a 30-mark practical. IB Physics SL or HL and IGCSE physics bring smaller specialist requests, and some students move from IGCSE into HS or ISC and need help adjusting.

Entrance exams sit alongside. In the WBJEE 2026 bulletin, Paper II combined Physics and Chemistry, 40 questions and 50 marks each, in two hours, with the same three-category marking as maths and no calculators, log tables or watches in the hall; the Pharmacy Merit Rank uses Paper II alone.
