Maths tutor jobs in Kolkata

No calculator is allowed in any West Bengal Higher Secondary semester examination, and in WBJEE neither calculators nor log tables are allowed in the hall. In Kolkata, then, a maths tutor's real product is method and mental arithmetic that hold up under a clock, whether the student is in Class 9 with the Ganit Prakash books, in an ISC classroom or preparing for the state's engineering entrance.

Open tuition requests in Kolkata for maths

No open maths requests in Kolkata right now. New family requests appear here as they come in; join now so they can reach you.

If you teach maths, NXTutors is free to join. You list the boards and classes you teach, the medium you work in, the zones you reach and your fee, which families see before a free demo. This page covers maths demand in Kolkata, how the metro shapes your round and what wins the family's choice.

Who asks for maths tutors in Kolkata

Kolkata runs four kinds of board side by side. CISCE's ICSE and ISC have a long and strong following; the ICSE Class 10 Mathematics paper is three hours and 80 marks with 20 of internal assessment, and ISC Mathematics pairs an 80-mark theory paper with 20 marks of project work. CBSE is widely taken. On the state side, WBBSE runs Classes 9 and 10 and the Madhyamik, with mathematics taught from the Ganit Prakash books, and WBCHSE runs Classes 11 and 12.

Higher Secondary is now four semesters. Semesters I and III are multiple-choice; II and IV are written. In maths, the MCQ semester is 40 one-mark questions and the written one 40 marks of short and descriptive answers, 80 in theory per class. The split decides how chapters are tested: in Class 12, relations and functions, inverse trigonometry, matrices and determinants, continuity and differentiability, applications of derivatives and probability go in the MCQ semester, while vectors, three-dimensional geometry, integration, differential equations and linear programming are written. A tutor who teaches each chapter in the format it will be examined is exactly what HS families ask for.

WBJEE adds a further layer. In the 2026 bulletin, Paper I was Mathematics alone, 75 questions for 100 of the 200 marks in two hours, with three categories: single-answer one-mark questions with a quarter-mark penalty, single-answer two-mark questions with a half-mark penalty, and two-mark questions that may have more than one correct option, where any wrong option scores zero. A student weak in maths cannot make it up elsewhere. IB AA or AI and IGCSE maths add a smaller international stream.

Where in Kolkata the work is

The metro is a maths tutor's friend here. The Blue Line runs north to south, through Shyambazar, Girish Park and Belgachia in North Kolkata, past Netaji Bhavan, Jatin Das Park, Kalighat and Rabindra Sarobar, and on through Tollygunge to Kavi Nazrul for Garia. A tutor living near any Blue Line station can serve a long stretch of the city. The Green Line links Howrah, Esplanade and Salt Lake's Sector V, Central Park and City Centre.

Salt Lake is mostly independent houses on plots in lettered blocks, so the block letter, house number and nearest avenue get you to the door and there is usually no gate register. New Town and Rajarhat are almost entirely gated complexes where the desk wants your name, phone, tower and flat, and the Orange Line stations there are still under construction, so tutors already living in New Town, Rajarhat or Baguiati are the practical match.

Behala & New Alipore is reached by the Purple Line along Diamond Harbour Road, from Joka through Behala Chowrasta to Majerhat, with a short auto at the end. Puja season changes the calendar: when the heritage lanes and Gariahat fill up, moving some lessons online keeps students on track.

What families in Kolkata expect

  • Name your course: Madhyamik maths, HS semesters, ICSE, ISC, CBSE, IB AA or AI, IGCSE, or WBJEE Paper I.
  • Teach without calculators, building method and mental arithmetic for HS and WBJEE.
  • Match each chapter to its HS semester format, MCQ or written.
  • For Bengali-medium students, practise writing in the medium of the exam.
  • For WBJEE, drill the three question categories and when not to guess.
  • For ISC, support the project work honestly without doing it.
  • Plan around school summatives and the Puja holidays.

How to get picked

Kolkata parents compare maths tutors on board, medium and route. Make your headline specific: "HS maths, Semesters I to IV, English and Bengali medium" or "ICSE and ISC maths, Blue Line Tollygunge to Garia". If you also prepare WBJEE, say so and mention that you train category strategy, which many families have not heard explained.

At the demo, ask for a recent test and work one question without a calculator, then show the parent where time and marks went. For an HS student, show which chapters are MCQ and which are written in the coming semester. Leave a month plan. A note for school teachers: WBBSE's calendar repeats a state rule that teachers at recognised schools must not take private tuition for personal gain, so check what applies to you. The modules below explain how you get paid.

Joining, leads and pay

Joining is free

Applying, onboarding, building your profile, the ID check and receiving matched requests on the Free plan cost nothing. The Free plan gives you 160 lead credits every month.

Paid plans are optional

Pro, Premium and Featured are optional platform subscriptions: more visibility, AI tools and more lead credits. They are never a fee to apply for a tuition. See tutor plans.

How leads and credits work

A family request that fits your subjects, classes, board, areas and hours reaches your dashboard. Opening the family's contact details uses lead credits, and the credit price is shown on the request before you open it. At most 5 tutors can open one request, and a request stays open for 7 days. Credit packs are there if you need more.

How you get paid

You set your own fee. When a family pays for classes through NXTutors, you receive 50% of the fee for home tuition in the first month and the full fee after that, and 70% of the fee for online tuition every month. Payments are held for 7 days, then paid out weekly. How you get paid.

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.

Questions from tutors

How is HS maths examined in West Bengal now?

In four semesters. Semesters I and III are 40 one-mark multiple-choice questions; II and IV are 40 marks of written answers, 80 in theory per class. No calculator is allowed. Check the WBCHSE site for current rules.

How much of WBJEE is maths?

In the 2026 bulletin, Paper I was Mathematics: 75 questions for 100 of the 200 marks, over two hours. Confirm the current bulletin on the WBJEEB site.

Do I need to teach in Bengali?

Not always, but state it. Teaching language matters as much as board in Kolkata, and Bengali-medium students must practise writing in the exam's medium.

Is ICSE and ISC maths in demand in Kolkata?

CISCE's ICSE and ISC have a long and strong following here. ICSE maths is an 80-mark paper with 20 internal; ISC pairs 80 theory marks with 20 of project work.

Can I teach maths if I work at a West Bengal school?

WBBSE's calendar repeats a 2018 state rule that teachers at recognised schools must not take private tuition for personal gain. Read the board's published rules before taking students.

Which zones suit a maths tutor without a vehicle?

Those on the Blue, Green or Purple Lines: North Kolkata, Ballygunge, Tollygunge to Garia, Salt Lake, Behala and Howrah. New Town is better served by tutors already living there.
