Sectors I, II and III are the residential heart, and Sector I is the oldest part. Most families live in independent houses on plots, with a smaller number of apartment buildings mixed in, and most homes open straight onto the street, so the first class is usually as simple as ringing the bell. Sector V, the office and IT district administered by the Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority, set up in 2006, sits beside the residential sectors, which is why the roads heading towards it behave so differently from the quiet inner streets.

The Green Line's first section, from Salt Lake Sector V to Salt Lake Stadium via Karunamoyee, Central Park, City Centre and Bengal Chemical, opened in February 2020. On 22 August 2025 the Sealdah–Esplanade section opened, giving a continuous metro from Sector V to Howrah Maidan, so tutors from central Kolkata and across the river can now reach Salt Lake without a car.
