The final school year in Kolkata asks a student to do several things at once. A Higher Secondary student sits two council-run semesters, one in multiple-choice form and one written. An ISC or CBSE student prepares for board papers while practicals and projects fall due. Science students add JEE Main, NEET or WBJEE; others may sit CUET. Under the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education's semester system, Class 12 is made up of Semester III and Semester IV. Unlike the Class 11 semesters, both are conducted by the council itself, at centres it assigns. Its examination FAQ sets out the shape:

By Class 12, a tutor who "does all subjects" is rarely enough. Physics, chemistry, maths and biology each need someone who knows that subject's board paper and entrance pattern. Write the full week out first; two hours of self-study a day matter more than another class. Two habits separate a comfortable Higher Secondary final year from a stressful one. The first is arithmetic by hand. Because the council allows no calculator in any semester-system examination, physics numericals, physical chemistry, statistics and accountancy all have to be done with pencil methods: rounding sensibly, cancelling before multiplying, and checking an answer's size before writing it down. A tutor should time these steps, not just the final answer, from the first week. The second habit is the practical and project record. Since theory and practical are passed separately, an incomplete file or a missed experiment can cost a subject even when the theory paper goes well. Tollygunge has three Blue Line stations and a Budge Budge line station, so most tutors arrive by metro and a short auto ride. In Alipore, many larger homes have a staffed gate, so share the tutor's name in advance. New Alipore is laid out in lettered blocks with two stations of its own, which makes a first visit easy to direct.
Shyambazar centres on its five-point crossing, and the last few steps into the lanes are often on foot from the metro. Riverside Bagbazar is reached by the Circular Railway, the Blue Line at Shyambazar or ferries to the ghat. The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education conducts both Class 12 semesters for Kolkata students itself, at centres it assigns. Semester III is multiple-choice and Semester IV is written, with practicals at the student's own school before Semester IV. Kolkata Higher Secondary students need 30% in five subjects, the two languages and any three electives, in theory and in project or practical separately, the council's FAQ says. The result counts the five strongest subjects, and a sixth subject is optional. Ask the school how the council's Rule 9/1 and 9/2 apply.
Yes, Class 12 board marks matter for JEE admission for Kolkata students, not just the entrance score itself. NTA's 2026 JEE Main bulletin set a Class 12 condition for admission: 75% in aggregate, 65% for SC, ST and PwD candidates, or a place in the highest 20 percentile of the board. So board preparation cannot be dropped.
