Home Tuition in Thiruvananthapuram: A Guide to Every Zone

By NXTutors Academic Team 9 min read

Thiruvananthapuram spreads out from the old centre around East Fort and Thampanoor in several directions, and each direction has its own kind of home. North of the centre, Kowdiar and Pattom mix large houses with busy junctions. Further north, Peroorkada and Vattiyoorkavu are mostly villas and plots, with Vattiyoorkavu on higher ground. Along NH 66, Ulloor, Sreekaryam and Kazhakkoottam grow around the IT park. From the centre southwards, Thycaud, Poojappura and Karamana include the theruvu streets of old Karamana, with Nemom at the southern edge.

This guide walks through all four zones and every locality NXTutors covers in them. For each one it describes the homes, how a tutor gets there and when a weekly class is easiest to keep.

How do tutors get around the city?

Thiruvananthapuram has no metro yet. A metro is a proposed project, and a first-phase alignment was approved in October 2025, but it is not being built. Tutors therefore travel by city bus, auto, two-wheeler and, in a few places, train. The city bus terminal is at East Fort, and the central bus station at Thampanoor stands opposite Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station.

Kowdiar & Pattom

This central-north zone is shaped by its junctions. Kowdiar is the starting point of the Rajapatha, the royal path that runs to East Fort through Vellayambalam, where roads from Kowdiar, Sasthamangalam, East Fort, Thycaud and Thampanoor meet. Pattom is a four-road junction that includes NH 66 towards north Kerala, and at Kesavadasapuram NH 66 meets MC Road, which starts there and runs north to Angamaly.

  • Kowdiar: large independent houses and villas on wide, tree-lined roads, with a growing number of apartment complexes. Main links run to Peroorkada junction, Pattom junction and PMG. Houses mean doorstep arrival; complexes need the tutor's name at the security desk once.
  • Vellayambalam: a roundabout junction with government offices and cultural venues, and homes, mostly apartments with some villas, in the lanes behind. Buses and autos arrive from almost every direction, but the junction is busy when offices open and close.
  • Sasthamangalam: a quiet residential ward known for its old Mahadevar temple, with independent houses, three-bedroom flats and some plots. Tutors come in from Vellayambalam, Kowdiar or Vattiyoorkavu.
  • Pattom: offices and shopping complexes on the main roads, with houses and apartment buildings in the side streets. It is a major bus stop for Thampanoor and East Fort services, so tutors from across the city can ride in.
  • Kesavadasapuram: a commercial and educational hub at the NH 66 and MC Road junction, with homes in pockets such as Pillaveedu Nagar and Muttada and Parottukonam close by. Weekday classes are easier after the evening peak.

Peroorkada & Vattiyoorkavu

The northern suburbs are greener and more spread out, with villas and plots rather than towers. Kudappanakunnu holds the Civil Station and the District Collector's office, the district's administrative headquarters. Vattiyoorkavu is a comparatively high-lying area crossed by the Killi and Karamana rivers. A flyover at the Peroorkada junction was cleared for construction from September 2025, so allow a little buffer there at peak hours.

  • Peroorkada: independent houses and villas, including gated villa communities, on the road towards Nedumangad. Register the tutor at the main gate of a gated community; elsewhere the tutor parks at the family's own gate.
  • Kudappanakunnu: villas, houses and residential plots around the Civil Station, with Vazhayila, Nalanchira, Muttada and Mannanthala as neighbours. MLA Road is busiest at government office hours, and for many homes the nearest main bus stop is at Mannanthala.
  • Vattiyoorkavu: once an artisan settlement, now a residential area with villas, plots, apartment complexes and villa projects. Regular buses run to East Fort, and auto and taxi stands sit near the junction.
  • Nalanchira: a residential suburb on MC Road between Mannanthala and Pananvila, known for its many schools, with named residential nagars of independent houses. The road is busiest at school opening and closing times, so early-evening slots work well.

Ulloor & Kazhakkoottam

NH 66 is the spine of this zone. Sreekaryam lies north of Ulloor, roughly midway between Kazhakkoottam and Palayam, and at Kazhakkoottam the highway meets the Kazhakkoottam–Kovalam bypass. An elevated four-lane stretch above that junction opened on 3 December 2022. The proposed metro route lists stations along this corridor, but none is built.

  • Ulloor: a busy main junction on the old NH 66 route, with houses, some apartment buildings and plots behind it, and double-storey and rental homes towards Akkulam. Route around the junction at peak times.
  • Sreekaryam: an education and research hub with apartment projects, rental houses and gated villa communities close to the IT park. Evening classes after the school and shift rush are easier to keep.
  • Kazhakkoottam: the city's IT suburb, with apartment projects near the IT park, villa communities, houses and plots. Kazhakuttam railway station and frequent NH 66 buses serve it; set classes around IT shift changes or at weekends.

Thycaud & Karamana

This zone, running from the centre to the south, is the easiest to reach by public transport. Thiruvananthapuram Central at Thampanoor was inaugurated on 4 November 1931, and in August 2024 Nemom station was renamed Thiruvananthapuram South as a satellite station to Central. NH 66 runs south through Karamana towards Kanyakumari district, and Poojappura is ringed by Jagathy, Karamana, Mudavanmugal and Thirumala.

  • Vazhuthacaud: a central mix of homes, offices, the radio station and a theatre, with many fairly new apartment buildings. Parking can be tight in the busier lanes, so a family in a house might offer the gate area for a scooter.
  • Thycaud: villas and independent houses close to Thampanoor, with Vazhuthacaud and Jagathy next door. A tutor can arrive by train or bus and take a short auto ride, but avoid the office rush around Thampanoor.
  • Poojappura: homes alongside state government offices, with plots, villas, houses and apartment projects. The Trivandrum–Nagercoil highway runs close by; evening classes after office hours are easier.
  • Thirumala: a quiet hilltop suburb of houses and villas on the road towards Kattakkada. Buses run from Thampanoor and East Fort, and most visits are straight to the family's gate.
  • Karamana: green and densely populated, with the Karamana river and an older core of theruvu, narrow wall-sharing streets of joined houses. A tutor on a scooter or on foot has the easier time there.
  • Nemom: the southern edge of the corporation area, with independent houses, villas and plenty of plots along NH 66. Buses link it with Karamana and Thampanoor.

How should families plan the week?

  • Pick a slot around your junction, not the clock. Each zone has one or two pinch points, such as Pattom, Vellayambalam, Ulloor, the Civil Station roads or Thampanoor. Set the class just after their peak and keep it fixed.
  • Sort out entry once. In a gated community, apartment project or villa project, register the tutor at the gate before the first class. In a house, share a landmark such as a temple, junction or bus stop.
  • Use online classes where travel does not make sense. The city's boards include the Kerala State Board, CBSE, ICSE and ISC, and IB and IGCSE. For a specialist in a senior science subject or an international programme who lives across the city, an online class often works better than a long bus ride.
  • Know the budget before the demo. Our guide to home tuition fees in Thiruvananthapuram turns weekly hours into a weekly cost.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a metro in Thiruvananthapuram that tutors can use?

No, Thiruvananthapuram has no metro that tutors can use yet; it is a proposed project, and the first-phase alignment approved in October 2025 is not being built. Tutors travel by city bus, auto, two-wheeler and, for some areas, train from Thiruvananthapuram Central, Thiruvananthapuram South at Nemom or Kazhakuttam railway station.

Which parts of Thiruvananthapuram are easiest for a tutor to reach?

In Thiruvananthapuram, localities near the big bus hubs and junctions, such as Thycaud near Thampanoor, Pattom and Vellayambalam, are easiest for a tutor to reach. They have the widest choice of routes. Suburbs on higher ground, such as Vattiyoorkavu and Thirumala, are quieter and still served by buses, so a tutor from a nearby locality is often the simplest match there.

Do villa communities in Peroorkada and Vattiyoorkavu let tutors in easily?

Villa communities in Peroorkada, Kudappanakunnu and Vattiyoorkavu let tutors in easily once the tutor is registered at the main gate. Give security the tutor's name and visiting days before the first class. Independent villas and houses outside those communities let the tutor come straight to the door, usually parking at the family's own gate.

What is the easiest tuition slot near Kazhakkoottam and Sreekaryam?

Near Kazhakkoottam and Sreekaryam, the easiest tuition slot is one set around IT shift changes and school hours, when NH 66 is at its busiest. An evening slot after the school and shift rush, or a weekend class, is easier to keep. Kazhakuttam railway station and frequent NH 66 buses serve the area, and an online tutor can cover a specialist subject.

How much does home tuition cost in Thiruvananthapuram?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each tutor sets their own fee, and you see it before the free demo class.

Which boards can tutors teach in Thiruvananthapuram?

Tutors in Thiruvananthapuram can be matched for the Kerala State Board, CBSE, ICSE and ISC, and IB and IGCSE. Put the board, class and subject in your request along with your locality. For a specialist in a senior science subject or an international programme who lives across the city, an online class often works better than a long bus ride.
