What home tuition costs in Hyderabad

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.

Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

IGCSE maths tutor in Hyderabad: Cambridge 0580, Core or Extended, and marks that survive the mark scheme

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics looks friendly to a parent who studied on an Indian board: algebra, geometry, statistics, nothing exotic. The surprises come from the way it is examined. Half the grade is earned without a calculator, the tier your child is entered for fixes the highest grade they can get, and answers lose marks for rounding too early. This page, by Ajay Vatsyayan, who teaches IB, IGCSE and ISC maths on NXTutors, explains the 0580 syllabus for exams in 2025 to 2027, the optional 0606 Additional Mathematics, and how we find a tutor who can reach your part of Hyderabad. It sits under our Hyderabad maths tutors page and the IGCSE tutors in Hyderabad hub.

What we ask before matching a tutor

Four questions behind every IGCSE maths match
QuestionWhy it matters
Cambridge or Edexcel? Both are taught in Hyderabad and the papers differ; this page covers Cambridge 0580, so tell us if your school uses Edexcel
Core or Extended, or still undecided? The tier sets which papers your child sits and the grade range open to them
Which exam series?Cambridge runs June and November series, and a March series is available to schools in India; the series sets the deadline for the plan
Is 0606 Additional Mathematics on the timetable? It needs a tutor comfortable well beyond 0580

With those answers, we look for tutors who teach that syllabus regularly rather than general maths tutors willing to try it. Cambridge plans about 130 guided learning hours for the course, which is two school years of steady work rather than a subject that can be crammed in Grade 10.

Two papers per candidate, one without a calculator

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580, exams in 2025 to 2027
TierNon-calculator paperCalculator paperGrades available
CorePaper 1: 1 h 30 min, 80 marks, 50%Paper 3: 1 h 30 min, 80 marks, 50%C to G
ExtendedPaper 2: 2 h, 100 marks, 50%Paper 4: 2 h, 100 marks, 50%A* to E

Where a calculator is allowed it must be a scientific one; graphical and algebraic calculators are not permitted. The syllabus is organised in nine topic areas that Cambridge says are not a teaching order, so schools sequence them differently. A tutor should follow the school's order in term time and switch to mixed-topic papers only once the content is covered. Cambridge revised some content for exams from 2025, so books and question banks written for the older syllabus need checking before use.

Core or Extended: the decision that caps the grade

Core papers can earn grades C to G; Extended papers A* to E. A student entered for Core cannot get above a C however well they do, and a student entered for Extended who has a poor day risks dropping below the lowest grade the tier offers. The decision is the school's, usually after Grade 9 tests and mocks, but a tutor can give the family a clear view in advance.

  • Signs Extended is right: algebra is secure, the student copes with multi-step questions, and the Extended content not on Core is not a struggle.
  • Signs Core is safer: marks on basic number and algebra are inconsistent, and the student needs the full time to finish a Core paper.
  • The middle case: a tutor can work through Extended-only topics over a term and set a timed Extended paper; the result is better evidence than any opinion.

Half the grade without a calculator

Paper 1 or Paper 2 carries half the grade and bans the calculator altogether. Students who came up through calculator-heavy primary years, or who have leaned on one through Grade 8, feel this immediately. The fix is short and frequent: ten minutes of non-calculator work at the start of each session on fractions and percentages, negative numbers, standard form, surds and exact trigonometric values, squares and roots, and checking answers by estimation. Over a year that adds up to many hours of practice without crowding the rest of the lesson.

Accuracy rules and how marks are given

The syllabus sets out the accuracy Cambridge expects, and examiners apply it strictly:

  • Non-exact answers to three significant figures, and angles in degrees to one decimal place, unless the question says otherwise.
  • Pi from the calculator key, or 3.142.
  • No early rounding: keep full values in the calculator until the final step, or the last figure drifts.
  • Method, accuracy and independent marks: mark schemes award M marks for a correct method, A marks for accurate answers that depend on that method, and B marks for independent results. Clear working protects M marks even when the arithmetic slips.
  • Command words: the syllabus defines words such as "calculate", "show (that)" and "explain", and each asks for something specific.

Cambridge's examiner reports describe the errors most candidates make in each series, and a good tutor reads them. Working through one with your child after a mock is often more useful than another past paper.

Additional Mathematics 0606, for students who want more

Some schools also offer Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics. It has two papers of two hours and 80 marks each, Paper 1 without a calculator and Paper 2 with one, graded A* to E. It goes further into algebra, functions, trigonometry and calculus than 0580 and is a sensible step for a student heading to IB AA HL, to A level maths, or to Intermediate MPC or ISC maths. It is a separate subject, so a tutor for it needs to be comfortable with pre-university mathematics, not just IGCSE.

Moving into IGCSE, or out of it after Grade 10

Into IGCSE. Hyderabad families often switch boards when they move from another state or from abroad. A student arriving from CBSE or the Telangana State Board, where Class 10 maths is a single 80-mark paper, usually knows the methods but not the two-paper structure, the non-calculator discipline or Cambridge's command words. A few weeks on those three points before the first school tests helps more than reteaching topics they already know. Our post on moving from CBSE to IB or IGCSE has a fuller plan, and Cambridge versus Edexcel IGCSE compares the two boards.

Out of IGCSE. After Grade 10, some students continue to the IB Diploma, some to A levels, and some move to Intermediate or ISC for Classes 11 and 12, often with an eye on entrance tests. Each route starts from a different gap; for the Diploma, see our IB maths tutor in Hyderabad page, and for the state route our Telangana Board tutors page. One local rule touches IGCSE years too: under Telangana's 2018 law, Telugu is a compulsory language up to Class 10 in schools of every board.

Spreading the work over Grades 9 and 10

An IGCSE maths rhythm, adjusted to your school's terms and exam series
WhenFocusSessions a week
Grade 9, first weeksFind the gaps; number and algebra fluency; the daily non-calculator warm-up beginsOne
Grade 9, rest of yearSchool topics in school order; past questions by topic; evidence for the tier decisionOne, sometimes two
Grade 10, first halfExtended-only topics where needed; first complete paper pairs under timeTwo
Mocks to the exam seriesTimed pairs marked with mark schemes; examiner-report errors; lost marks redone a week laterTwo or three

International schools in Hyderabad keep their own terms, which rarely line up with the state board calendar most neighbours follow, so the plan is built backwards from your child's exam series, not from the city's board season.

Home or online for IGCSE maths

The non-calculator paper is the strongest argument for a tutor in the room: watching a student work a fraction or a surd line by line shows exactly where the method breaks. Online works well for past-paper review and for Extended-only topics, especially when the strongest Cambridge match lives on the other side of the city. Many families keep one home session for written practice and add an online session in the weeks before mocks.

What to look for in the IGCSE maths demo

  1. The syllabus code. The tutor should ask for 0580 or 0606, the tier and the series before teaching.
  2. A non-calculator task. Ask them to teach one Paper 2 question with no calculator in sight.
  3. Mark-scheme language. Can they explain M, A and B marks on one of your child's answers?
  4. The tier view. After the demo, ask for an honest early opinion on Core or Extended and the evidence they would gather.
  5. Travel. Which station or road, and how they handle your gate's visitor system.

If the demo misses on these, tell us; another matched tutor can take a free demo of their own.

Fees and getting started

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fees, and you see each one before booking; the pricing guide and Hyderabad tuition fees post explain what changes the number.

IGCSE Maths Tutor in Hyderabad (Core & Extended): common questions

How much does an IGCSE maths tutor cost in Hyderabad?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tier, travel distance and sessions per week move the figure, and each fee is visible before the demo.

What is the difference between Core and Extended IGCSE maths?

In Cambridge 0580, Core students sit Papers 1 and 3, each 80 marks in an hour and a half, for grades C to G. Extended students sit Papers 2 and 4, each 100 marks in two hours, for grades A* to E. In both tiers one paper is taken without a calculator and carries half the grade.

Who decides whether my child takes Core or Extended?

The school makes the entry, usually after Grade 9 tests and mocks. A tutor can help you prepare for that conversation by covering Extended-only topics over a term and setting a timed Extended paper. The result gives the family and the school real evidence rather than a guess about which tier suits the student.

Which calculator can be used in IGCSE maths?

A scientific calculator, and only on the calculator paper. Graphical and algebraic calculators are not permitted. Because the other paper bans calculators entirely, tutors usually begin each session with a few minutes of non-calculator practice on fractions, surds, standard form and estimation, which builds the skill steadily across Grades 9 and 10.

Is Additional Mathematics 0606 worth taking?

For a confident student heading to IB AA HL, A level maths, or Intermediate MPC or ISC maths, often yes. It has two two-hour papers of 80 marks, one without a calculator, graded A* to E, and goes further into algebra, trigonometry and calculus. It needs a tutor comfortable with pre-university mathematics, not only IGCSE.

My child is moving from CBSE to IGCSE in Hyderabad. Where should we start?

Not with topics they already know. CBSE and State Board students usually have the methods but are new to Cambridge's two-paper structure, the non-calculator paper, accuracy rules such as three significant figures, and command words. A few focused weeks on those before the first school tests prevents most early lost marks.

Can IGCSE maths be tutored online?

Yes, especially past-paper review and Extended-only topics, provided the tutor can see the written working on a second camera. Many Hyderabad families keep one home session for non-calculator practice and add online sessions before mocks, which also lets them use a Cambridge specialist who lives in another part of the city.
