Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Mumbai parents usually start looking for IGCSE maths help at one of three moments: when their child joins a Cambridge school from the State Board, ICSE or CBSE; when Grade 9 sets are fixed and the child lands in a lower set; or when the Grade 10 mocks show marks leaking from the non-calculator paper. Each moment needs a different kind of tutor. This page, written by Ajay Vatsyayan, who teaches IB, IGCSE and ISC maths on NXTutors, explains how Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 is examined for the 2025 to 2027 series, where students lose marks, and how IGCSE maths tuition works across Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai. For the board as a whole, see our IGCSE tutors in Mumbai hub.
Every candidate sits two papers, each worth half the grade. One of the pair is taken without a calculator and the other needs a scientific calculator; graphical and algebraic calculators are not allowed. Answers go on the question paper itself, and all necessary working must be shown.
| Tier | Non-calculator paper | Calculator paper | Grades open to the candidate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core | Paper 1: 80 marks, 1 h 30 min | Paper 3: 80 marks, 1 h 30 min | C to G |
| Extended | Paper 2: 100 marks, 2 h | Paper 4: 100 marks, 2 h | A* to E |
The last column is the one parents most need to understand. However well a Core candidate performs, a C is the highest grade available. A student who wants an A or A*, or who is heading towards IB Analysis and Approaches, A Level maths or a science stream, needs an Extended entry. Teaching sets are often decided in Grade 9 and entries confirmed in Grade 10 on mock results, so a family that thinks its child belongs in Extended should talk to the school early and use the months before the mocks to cover Extended-only content. Our Core and Extended maths guide goes into that choice.
The syllabus covers nine topic areas: number; algebra and graphs; coordinate geometry; geometry; mensuration; trigonometry; transformations and vectors; probability; and statistics. Cambridge does not prescribe a teaching order, so schools sequence them differently, and the course is designed around roughly 130 guided learning hours.
From the 2025 exams, Core gained inequalities and recall of certain squares, cubes and roots, and lost vector addition and subtraction, multiplying a vector by a scalar, and data collection. Extended gained surds, domain and range, exact trigonometric values, the same recall requirement and more graph forms, and lost linear programming, proper subsets, congruence criteria, box-and-whisker plots and data collection. Second-hand guides and older past papers are still useful, but a tutor needs to skip the removed content and find fresh practice for the new topics.
Students who have reached for a calculator for years often find the non-calculator paper the biggest shock of the course, and it is half of every candidate's result. The work that fixes it is unglamorous and regular:
I open every IGCSE session with a few minutes of this, without a calculator on the table. Kept up for a term, it changes the non-calculator paper more than any amount of last-minute revision.
Unless a question says otherwise, Cambridge expects non-exact answers to three significant figures and angles in degrees to one decimal place. The calculator's π or 3.142 should be used, and values should not be rounded until the final answer. "Exact" means leave it as a surd or in terms of π. If a question asks for working, a right answer without it cannot earn full marks.
Command words carry instructions too. "Show (that)" gives the answer and awards marks only for a structured method. "Write down" signals a quick mark with little working. "Work out" or "calculate" wants the method visible so method marks survive a slip. "Sketch" wants key features labelled, not a scaled drawing; "plot" wants points placed accurately. Cambridge mark schemes split marks into method (M), accuracy (A) and independent (B) marks, and the examiner reports published after each series list the commonest errors. A tutor who marks your child's papers that way, and reads those reports, teaches far more than one who ticks final answers.
Some Cambridge schools enter strong students for Additional Mathematics alongside 0580. It reaches beyond Extended into further functions, logarithms and an introduction to calculus, examined in two papers of two hours and 80 marks each, the first without a calculator and the second with one; grades run from A* to E. It is a natural stepping stone to IB AA HL or A Level maths, but only for students already secure on Extended. A student taking both should ideally have one tutor for both, so the courses support each other.
Mumbai families often switch boards when a child moves school, and maths shows the change first. The arithmetic and much of the algebra will be familiar. What is new tends to be set notation and Venn diagrams, transformations and vectors, function notation and inverses on Extended, and above all the style: shorter prompts, less hand-holding, and accuracy conventions applied on every calculator paper. ICSE students usually write working well and adjust fastest; State Board and CBSE students often need more time on unguided multi-step questions.
The tutor's first job is an audit: list the Cambridge topics the student has never met, teach those first, then move to past questions in Cambridge style. A student joining in Grade 10 needs this quickly, because the tier is usually confirmed on mock results. After Grade 10, many Mumbai IGCSE students move to the IB Diploma, and the IB maths tutor in Mumbai page explains that next step.
| Stretch | Main work | Sessions a week |
|---|---|---|
| Start of Grade 9 | Audit of gaps; algebra fluency; the non-calculator warm-up habit begins | One |
| Rest of Grade 9 | Follow school topics; past questions sorted by topic; tier conversation if needed | One, sometimes two |
| First half of Grade 10 | Extended-only content; first full papers in the correct pair | Two |
| Mocks to the series | Timed pairs marked with the mark scheme; redo every lost mark a week later | Two or three |
For students who joined late, compress the first two rows into a few weeks; for students also sitting 0606, add one session a week from the start of Grade 10.
Cambridge families are spread across Mumbai, so we plan around the route a tutor takes to you:
| Zone and locality | How tutors usually arrive | Practical tip |
|---|---|---|
| South Mumbai: Cuffe Parade | Line 3 underground to its Cuffe Parade terminus, or the Western line to Churchgate | Avoid slots that collide with office hours in the nearby towers |
| Worli and Dadar: Worli | Line 3 has a Worli stop; Dadar links Central and Western lines | Register a regular tutor with the tower desk once |
| Bandra, Khar and Santacruz: Khar | Khar Road station on the Western and Harbour lines, with exits on both sides | Say which side of the tracks you live on |
| Vile Parle and Juhu: Vile Parle West | Often on foot or by short auto; the suburb is known as an education centre | Look close by first before widening the search |
| Andheri and Jogeshwari: Andheri West | D N Nagar on Line 1, Line 2A from the north | Metro and auto is usually more punctual than driving and parking |
| Navi Mumbai: Kharghar | Harbour line, or Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 for inner sectors | Slightly later evening slots miss the college-hour traffic |
For Thane, Powai and the northern suburbs, the Thane and Navi Mumbai tuition guide and the western suburbs guide go area by area.
The non-calculator paper is the reason many families prefer home sessions: a tutor beside the student sees a slipped sign or a crammed method as it happens. Online works just as well when the notebook is filmed from above and the tutor asks for every step aloud. Online also widens the pool of tutors who know 0580 and 0606, which matters if you are far from the listing clusters. International schools in Mumbai keep their own terms, so plan the home sessions around school holidays and the monsoon, and keep online as the fallback that stops a week being lost.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. For IGCSE maths, the tier, whether 0606 is involved, the tutor's travel and the number of weekly sessions move the figure; each tutor's fee is shown before the demo. Usually, yes. We match on syllabus code and tier first, then on the route: tutors on your own rail or metro line come before those crossing the city. Where the right Cambridge specialist is far away, one home session plus online sessions keeps the same tutor without long weekday journeys.
Core (Papers 1 and 3) caps the grade at C, while Extended (Papers 2 and 4) opens A* to E. Students aiming for an A, IB Analysis and Approaches, A Level maths or a science stream need Extended. Moving up takes months of Extended-only work, so raise it with the school early.
By making arithmetic a weekly habit rather than a last-minute fix. Paper 1 (Core) and Paper 2 (Extended) are taken without a calculator and each is half the grade. Short regular practice on fractions, estimation, surds, indices and exact trigonometric values does more than any revision weekend before the exam.
Usually set notation, Venn diagrams, transformations and vectors, function notation on Extended, and a less guided question style with strict accuracy rules. A tutor first lists the Cambridge topics the student has not met, teaches those, then moves to past questions. Students joining in Grade 10 need this quickly, before the mocks.
Yes, when the tutor can see the working. With the notebook filmed from above, online sessions handle past-paper practice and mark-scheme marking well, and they widen the choice of tutors who know 0580 and 0606. Many Mumbai families keep a home session and move others online in the monsoon or on busy weeks.
Yes. You choose one of two or three matched tutors for a free demo on whatever your child is studying that week. If the fit is not right, tell us and the next tutor gets their own free demo. Switching tutor later, for instance before Grade 10, costs nothing.
