Home Tuition Fees in Mumbai (2026): A Weekly Ready Reckoner
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. The same band applies from Colaba to Borivali and from Mulund across the creek to Panvel. Each tutor sets their own fee, and you see it before the first class, so this guide is about reading that number well rather than guessing it.
Mumbai has its own quirks for a tuition budget. Many tutors cross the city by suburban train and metro rather than by car, most homes are in buildings with a watchman or a lobby desk, and parents choose between the state board, CBSE, ICSE and ISC, and the IB and IGCSE programmes. Below you will find a ready reckoner for the weekly bill, a board-by-board starting point, what the rail line near your home does to your shortlist, the money questions to settle early and where the free demo fits.
What does the band come to each week?
Most parents think in weekly or monthly terms, so start there. The grid shows the weekly cost at five points inside the NXTutors band, for one to four hours of teaching a week. The middle three rates are illustrative steps, not quotes.
| Rate an hour | 1 hour a week | 2 hours a week | 3 hours a week | 4 hours a week |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹800 | ₹800 | ₹1,600 | ₹2,400 | ₹3,200 |
| ₹1,200 | ₹1,200 | ₹2,400 | ₹3,600 | ₹4,800 |
| ₹1,600 | ₹1,600 | ₹3,200 | ₹4,800 | ₹6,400 |
| ₹2,000 | ₹2,000 | ₹4,000 | ₹6,000 | ₹8,000 |
| ₹2,500 | ₹2,500 | ₹5,000 | ₹7,500 | ₹10,000 |
To turn a weekly figure into a month, multiply by four and a third, since most months run a little over four weeks. Two hours a week at ₹1,200 is ₹2,400 a week, or about ₹10,400 a month. Read along a row to see what adding an hour costs, and down a column to see what a more specialised tutor costs for the same schedule. Our pricing guide explains the factors behind each step.
Board by board: where does a plan usually start?
Mumbai families choose between the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, which holds the SSC at the end of Class 10 and the HSC at the end of Class 12, CBSE, ICSE and ISC, and the international IB and IGCSE programmes. The table gives a sensible first plan for each; the tutor and the demo will refine it.
| Stage and board | Where in the band | A first weekly plan | What to ask the tutor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classes 1–8, any board | Set by each tutor's own fee | Two hours, often split across two visits | How will homework be checked between classes? |
| Classes 9–10: SSC, CBSE or ICSE | Set by each tutor's own fee | Two hours each for maths and science | Which chapters come first, and when is the first mock? |
| Classes 11–12: HSC, CBSE or ISC science | Toward the upper end | Two hours per subject that needs help | Can you cover both the board paper and practicals? |
| IGCSE or IB | Toward the upper end | Two to three hours per subject | How well do you know this syllabus and its assessment? |
| IB HL or JEE Advanced | Specialists can charge more | Agreed after the demo | What will the first month cover, week by week? |
| JEE or NEET alongside Class 11–12 | Toward the upper end | Built around the school timetable | How will board work and entrance work share the hours? |
Where a student needs two subjects, it is usually cheaper and calmer to start the weaker one at full weight and the stronger one light, then rebalance after the first unit test, than to book both at full weight from the first week.
What moves a quote, and what only changes the plan?
It helps to keep two lists apart.
- Things that move the rate: the class, the board, the subject, an entrance goal such as JEE or NEET, and the tutor's depth in that exact syllabus. An IB HL tutor and a Class 6 homework tutor are pricing different work.
- Things that change the plan, not the band: where you live, how the tutor travels, and whether classes are at home or online. These decide how many tutors can reach you on a weekday evening and how many quotes you get to compare.
Paying more for a tutor who is further away rarely makes sense when a tutor with the same board depth lives on your own rail line. Paying more for depth, when the goal is a senior class or a specialist programme, often does.
How does the rail line near you shape the shortlist?
In Mumbai, the line a tutor lives on matters more than the distance on a map. A home a short auto ride from a suburban station or a metro stop can draw tutors from anywhere along that line.
Along the Western line
From Churchgate through Dadar, Bandra, Andheri and Borivali to Dahisar, the Western line and the Harbour line's western branch carry most tutor trips on the west side. Metro Lines 1, 2A and 7 fill the gaps between the stations. See the western suburbs guide and the South and Central Mumbai guide.
Along the Central line
Dadar, Sion, Ghatkopar, Kanjurmarg, Bhandup and Mulund lie on the Central line, with the Harbour line serving Chembur and Metro Line 1 linking Ghatkopar with Andheri. Metro Line 4 is under construction along this side and does not yet carry passengers. See the central suburbs guide.
Thane and across the creek
Thane is on the Central line and is where the Trans-Harbour line begins. That line runs through Airoli, Ghansoli, Kopar Khairane and Vashi towards Panvel, while the Harbour line serves Vashi, Nerul, Belapur and Panvel from the Mumbai side. Parts of Thane's Ghodbunder Road belt have no station yet, so tutors there come by road. See the Thane and Navi Mumbai guide.
How should the budget handle the monsoon and exam season?
Three moments in the Mumbai school year deserve a line in the budget before they arrive.
- Heavy-rain days. Agree in advance that a class moves online if travel is disrupted, at the same rate and time. That keeps the weekly hours intact without a missed-class argument.
- Before school and board exams. Many families want extra hours in the last stretch. Ask now whether those hours are at the same rate, and cap them: an extra hour a week for a set number of weeks is easier to plan than an open-ended increase.
- After results. Decide whether tuition pauses, drops to one class a week, or starts on next year's syllabus. A short pause costs nothing and gives the student a clean start.
Which money questions should we settle before the first paid class?
- Is payment monthly in advance, or after the classes are held?
- What happens when either side cancels, and how much notice is needed?
- If a class is cut short, is the time made up or adjusted?
- Does the rate change for extra hours before exams?
- If two children in the family learn together, how is that priced?
- If the tutor also offers online sessions, is the rate the same?
Write the answers in a message to the tutor, so both sides have the same record.
Where do the free demo and free switching save money?
We shortlist two or three matched tutors for each request, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo, so the weekly grid above can be filled in with real numbers before anyone visits. The first class is a free demo, which means you judge the teaching before paying for a single hour; our demo class checklist for parents lists what to watch. If the plan is not working a few weeks in, switching tutor later is free, so you do not pay twice to start again.

Frequently asked questions
What is the hourly rate for a home tutor in Mumbai?
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each tutor sets their own fee, and you see it before the free demo class.
How do we turn an hourly rate into a monthly figure?
Multiply the rate by the hours a week, then by four and a third. Two hours a week at ₹1,200 an hour is ₹2,400 a week, or about ₹10,400 a month. Work out both ends of your shortlist's quotes before the demo so there are no surprises.
Is tuition dearer in South Mumbai than in the suburbs?
The band is the same across the city. The class, board, subject and the tutor's depth in that syllabus set most of a fee. Where you live mainly decides how many tutors can reach you on a weekday evening, which changes how many quotes you can compare.
What happens to a class on a heavy-rain day?
Settle it before the monsoon. Many families agree that the class moves online at the usual time and rate when travel is disrupted, so the week's hours are not lost. Put the arrangement in a message to the tutor so both sides remember it later.
Can we mix home and online classes to manage cost?
Yes. Keep a home tutor for the subject that needs the most hands-on help and take a second subject, or a specialist programme such as IB or IGCSE, online. That cuts weekly trips and widens the choice of tutors. Switching tutor later is free if the mix does not suit.
