Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Walk down one corridor in a Mumbai society and you may pass a child writing an SSC English answer, another drafting an ICSE composition and a third preparing an IB oral. They all study "English", yet the papers they face have little in common, and a tutor who is excellent for one may be the wrong person for the next door down. This page sets out what each board asks for in English, how the State Board fits in, how a tutor can reach you from the island city to Thane and Navi Mumbai, and what to test in a free demo class. The national English home tutor guide covers the four skills in more depth.
Start with the board and the class, not with "spoken English" or "grammar". Each Mumbai board divides the marks in its own way, and that division decides how a tutor should spend the hour.
| Board and class | How English is examined | First thing a tutor should check |
|---|---|---|
| Maharashtra State Board, SSC (Class 10) | The board's own English textbook and question paper; pattern published by the board | Which English course the school follows and the latest board question paper |
| CBSE Class 10 (184) | An 80-mark paper: unseen reading 20, grammar 10, a formal letter and an analytical paragraph 10, literature 40; school adds 20 | Whether answers stay inside the word limits the marking scheme expects |
| CBSE Class 12 (301) | Reading 22, creative writing 18, literature 40 from Flamingo and Vistas; grammar drops out | How well the student links themes across chapters |
| ICSE Class 10 | Two papers, language and literature, each two hours and 80 marks, plus internal assessment | Speed on a 300 to 350 word composition |
| ISC Class 12 | Two three-hour papers of 80 marks, each with 20 marks of project work | Planning a 400 to 450 word composition under time |
| Cambridge IGCSE | First Language 0500 or English as a Second Language 0510, chosen by the school | Which of the two your child is entered for |
| IB Diploma | Language A: unseen analysis, a comparative essay on two works and a 15-minute individual oral | Whether the student can explain how a text works, not just what it says |
Families weighing a move from CBSE to an international board after Class 10 can read our guide to switching to IB or IGCSE; the change in English expectations is one of the largest.
The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education conducts the SSC at the end of Class 10 and the HSC at the end of Class 12, and English is taught from the board's own textbooks. We do not reproduce its paper pattern here, because the board publishes it and revises it; your child's school will have the current version, and any detail should come from the board's official website.
For matching, three things matter more than a pattern chart:
In Classes 11 and 12, State Board students usually study at a junior college, and English continues alongside the stream subjects. A tutor who also knows how the HSC English paper rewards structured writing is worth asking for.
Across boards, the same four leaks turn up again and again. A good tutor names the one that applies to your child in the first two sessions.
For ICSE families, our ICSE Class 10 English papers guide goes question by question, and ISC students can use the ISC Class 12 English guide. A child who writes well but freezes when asked to speak may need a different kind of help; see our spoken English guide for students.
English tutors are spread fairly widely across the city, so the question is usually not whether a good one exists but whether they can arrive on time every week. We look at the rail or metro line first, then the distance. Here is how that plays out zone by zone.
| Zone | How tutors usually arrive | Arrange in advance |
|---|---|---|
| South Mumbai, e.g. Cuffe Parade | From the north: Churchgate, Mumbai Central, or the underground Line 3, which has reached Cuffe Parade since October 2025 | Lobby desks in towers want the tutor's name and flat number; in the defence area, ask about visitor entry first |
| Worli, Dadar and Central Mumbai | Dense rail links: Dadar sits on both main lines and Matunga has a station on all three | Redeveloped towers run strict visitor desks; older buildings are usually walk-up |
| Bandra, Khar and Santacruz, e.g. Khar | Western and Harbour trains stop at all three stations; Line 3 serves the east side | Say which side of the tracks you live on, since the station exit changes |
| Vile Parle and Juhu, e.g. Vile Parle West | Vile Parle station on two lines; Juhu has no station, so an auto from Vile Parle or Santacruz, or the D N Nagar metro | Agree the drop-off point for Juhu before the demo |
| Andheri and Jogeshwari, e.g. Versova | Where the metro lines meet: Line 1 at Versova and D N Nagar, Line 2A north through Oshiwara, Line 3 at Marol | Parking is tight, so a tutor on the metro tends to be more punctual |
| Goregaon and Malad | Line 2A along Link Road on the west, Line 7 along the highway on the east | Name your side of the tracks; crossing at peak hours is slow |
| Kandivali, Borivali and Dahisar, e.g. Charkop | Borivali is a terminus with many train services; Lines 2A and 7 meet at Dahisar East | In Charkop, share the sector and plot number with a landmark |
| Chembur, Ghatkopar and Powai | Harbour line for Chembur, Central line for Ghatkopar and Kanjurmarg, Line 1 from Andheri to Ghatkopar | Powai has no station; check guest parking and gate registration |
| Thane, e.g. Thane East | Near the station, on foot from Central or Trans-Harbour trains; Ghodbunder Road by bus, auto or two-wheeler | On Ghodbunder Road, prefer a tutor from your own stretch of the road |
| Navi Mumbai | Harbour and Trans-Harbour lines between the nodes, plus the Navi Mumbai metro for Kharghar | Give node, sector and building number |
Bhandup and Mulund, on the Central line just before Thane, are matched the same way: tutors from along that line come first. Vile Parle has long been known as an education centre, and tutors for board subjects often live close by there, which can make an after-school slot easy to keep. The full neighbourhood list is on our Mumbai home tuition page, and regional guides cover the western suburbs and Thane and Navi Mumbai.
English suits online teaching better than most subjects for students from about Class 5 upward, because written work can be shared on screen and marked before the next lesson. The long cross-city journeys that make home tuition hard in Mumbai disappear, and a specialist in ISC literature or IGCSE First Language no longer needs to live on your railway line.
Our home tutor or online tutor article compares the two in more detail.
Bring your child's last marked English paper or a recent composition. Then watch for these five things during the class:
If the tutor is not right, tell us and we set up a demo with the next one on your shortlist. Our demo class checklist for parents has more questions to ask.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. For English in Mumbai, the fee follows the class and board, the tutor's experience with that paper, the journey at your chosen hour and how many lessons you take each week. Tutors set their own fees, and every fee on your shortlist is visible before the demo. Our Mumbai home tuition fees guide and the pricing guide explain the range.
Send the class, the board by its exact name, what worries you most (writing, literature, reading, grammar or speaking), your neighbourhood and nearest station, the days and times that work, and a budget. We come back with two or three matched English tutors, each with a fee, and the first class with the one you choose is a free demo. If the fit changes later, switching tutor is free. Tutors who join go through an ID check before their profile is marked Verified, and you can browse tutor profiles or book a free demo class directly.
Families who need more than English can see our maths home tutors in Mumbai and science home tutors in Mumbai pages. English teachers living in Mumbai, Thane or Navi Mumbai can find students near home on the Mumbai tuition jobs page.

Yes, Mumbai families can find English tutors for the Maharashtra State Board SSC who teach from the board's prescribed English reader and practise with past SSC papers. Tell us the medium of your child's other subjects, because a child who meets English mainly in the English period needs more vocabulary and sentence work.
For Mumbai students, the CBSE Class 10 English board paper is worth 80 marks, and the school adds 20 through internal assessment. Unseen reading carries 20, grammar 10, a formal letter and an analytical paragraph 10, and literature 40. Literature is half the paper, so structured answers inside the word limits matter.
An ICSE or ISC English tutor in Mumbai should focus on timed, well-planned long writing, marked before the next lesson. ICSE Class 10 has language and literature papers of two hours and 80 marks each, with a 300 to 350 word composition. ISC has two three-hour papers, and its composition runs 400 to 450 words.
A Mumbai IGCSE English tutor needs to know whether your child is entered for First Language English 0500 or English as a Second Language 0510, a choice the school makes. First Language rewards analysis of how writers create effects and extended composition. Confirm the syllabus first, because preparing for the wrong one loses months.
Mumbai students usually lose English marks in four places: format, length and time, literature answers and unseen reading. A letter without the right layout or a notice with no date costs easy marks. Literature answers need the point asked, a reference to the text and a line of explanation, within the limit.
An English tutor can usually come regularly to Ghodbunder Road in Thane, near Mumbai, if they live on your own stretch of the corridor. There is no suburban station along the road, so tutors come by bus, auto or two-wheeler. We list nearby tutors first and suggest online lessons when nobody suitable can reach you.
For most Mumbai students from about Class 5 upward, online English tuition works as well as home tuition, because compositions are shared on screen and marked before the next lesson. It also opens up IB and IGCSE English specialists. Choose home tuition for a child still learning to read fluently or one who drifts on a screen.
In a free English demo class in Mumbai, check that the tutor reads your child's last marked paper before teaching anything new. Corrections should narrow to two or three priorities, and your child should write or speak for much of the hour. You should leave with a four-week plan of texts, formats and the first timed piece.
Tell us the class, board and your area. We share two or three matched tutors, and the first class is a free demo.
