Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Primary tuition in Mumbai is rarely about one subject. A Class 2 child may be learning to read in English at school, hearing Marathi or Gujarati at home and meeting Hindi as a third language, while a Class 5 child is juggling maths word problems, an EVS project and a long van ride back from school. A good primary tutor builds the basics, reading with understanding and confident arithmetic, and helps the family keep weekday evenings calm. This guide from the NXTutors Academic Team covers what each class band needs, how the five boards Mumbai children follow look at primary level, how often to book, how tutors reach each zone, and what to watch in a free demo.
Many children in Classes 1 to 5 manage perfectly well with school and a parent who checks the diary. Look for patterns that last more than a few weeks rather than one bad test:
One of these is worth watching. Two or three together, over a term, is a good reason to book a demo.
| Class | Reading and language | Maths | Habits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Letter sounds, blending, short stories read aloud every session | Counting, place value with objects, adding and taking away | Sitting for 15 minutes, a tidy notebook, packing the bag |
| 3–4 | Reading for meaning, answering "why" questions, sentence writing | Times tables, multiplication and division, measurement and money | Reading the timetable and starting homework without reminders |
| 5 | Short paragraphs, summarising a chapter, spelling patterns | Fractions, decimals, word problems with more than one step | Planning a project over a week, checking work before handing it in |
EVS, the second and third languages and general knowledge matter too, but in most cases they improve on their own once reading is fluent. A tutor who spends every session on EVS question-answers while reading stays weak is treating the symptom.
By Class 5, maths deserves extra attention because fractions and word problems lead straight into middle school. Our national guide to Class 5 maths tuition sets out the topics.
Children on the same floor of a Mumbai building may follow five different curricula. At primary level the differences are mostly about language, books and how much is tested, so tell the tutor which one your child is on.
| Board | What it looks like at primary level | What the tutor should adapt |
|---|---|---|
| Maharashtra State Board | Schools teach in Marathi, English and other media; the board's first public exam is the SSC at the end of Standard 10, written from the state's own textbooks | Teach in the school's medium of instruction, from the books your child brings home |
| CBSE | NCERT publishes textbooks for these classes; each school sets its own book list and class tests | Follow the school's list and keep written answers complete |
| ICSE | CISCE leaves the books for Classes 1 to 8 to each school | Ask for the book list; ICSE English later carries two papers, so reading and composition matter early |
| IB PYP | A transdisciplinary framework for ages 3 to 12, built around six themes, with the Exhibition in the final year | Support inquiry and presentation skills; never do the child's project |
| Cambridge Primary | Typically ages 5 to 11, with optional assessments including Cambridge Primary Checkpoint | Check whether the school uses Checkpoint, and practise its style only if it does |
For the later years, see our pages on the Maharashtra State Board in Mumbai, CBSE, ICSE, IB and IGCSE tutors in Mumbai.
Both, in the right proportion. Homework is a useful window into what the class is doing, and a child who arrives at school with it done feels more confident. But a session spent entirely on worksheets turns the tutor into a homework service, and the reading or maths gap underneath never closes.
A workable split for an hour: the first 15 minutes on reading aloud, 25 minutes teaching the weak skill, and the last 20 minutes on the day's homework, with your child doing the writing. Ask the tutor to note in the diary what was covered, so you can follow it up in five minutes at bedtime.
How often? Two or three sessions a week is plenty for most primary children. Daily tuition at this age crowds out play, which children need, and makes school feel like it never ends.
Language papers are where primary children in Mumbai most often carry a hidden gap. A child may read English fluently but stumble over Devanagari, or speak Marathi at home yet find the school's written Marathi formal and unfamiliar. Because these subjects get less time in class, the gap tends to grow quietly until Class 5 or 6.
The fix is rarely a separate tutor. Ask the main tutor to spend ten minutes of one session a week on the second or third language: reading a short passage aloud, copying a few lines neatly, and learning five new words. If the tutor is not comfortable in that language, a parent or grandparent can do the same at home. Tell us at the start if you want a tutor who can teach Marathi or Hindi as well as the core subjects.
Primary sessions usually start soon after the school van drops your child home, which is also when roads near stations begin to fill. The table shows typical routes and timing in six zones we match often:
| Zone | Typical way in | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| South Mumbai | Mumbai Central, then bus or taxi along the seafront | Lobby sign-in at most buildings; late afternoon or weekends |
| Worli, Dadar & Central | Mahim Junction on the Western and Harbour lines, or Line 3 | Share the building name; lanes off the main roads can confuse a first visit |
| Vile Parle & Juhu | Vile Parle station, east or west exit, then a short walk | Roads near colleges crowd at college hours |
| Goregaon & Malad | Line 7 to Kurar or Dindoshi for the east side | Send a landmark for narrow inner lanes |
| Chembur, Ghatkopar & Powai | Kanjurmarg on the Central line, then an auto | Office traffic on the link road morning and evening |
| Navi Mumbai | Trans-Harbour line to the node's station | Thane–Belapur Road is slow in office hours |
Our local guides to the western suburbs and the central and eastern suburbs go into more detail on each area.
For Classes 1 to 3, home tuition wins clearly: the tutor needs to hear reading aloud, watch pencil grip and use objects for maths. From Class 4, some children manage short online sessions well, especially for a specific need such as spelling practice or a times-table drill, if a parent is nearby and the session stays under 45 minutes.
In Mumbai, online also earns its place in the monsoon. When heavy rain disrupts local trains, a planned switch to a video session keeps the week going instead of losing it. Agree that fallback at the start.
The first class is a free demo. Sit in for part of it and look for these things:
If the match does not feel right, the next tutor on your shortlist can come for their own demo, and switching later costs nothing. Keep lessons in a shared room with an adult at home. Tutors who join go through an ID check before their profile is marked Verified.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Primary tuition usually sits toward the lower part of that range. A tutor covering all subjects, a long journey across lines at your slot, or a specialist for an international curriculum can raise it. Fees are set by each tutor and shown before the demo; see the pricing guide and our note on home tuition fees in Mumbai.
On the seafront at Breach Candy, most families live in buildings with a lobby desk, and tutors usually arrive via Mumbai Central. In Mahim, Mahim Junction and the Shitaladevi Mandir metro stop bring tutors in from Bandra, Dadar and the harbour side. In Vile Parle East, a suburb long known for its schools and colleges, a primary tutor can often be found within walking distance of the station.
In Malad East, homes range from village lanes in Kurar to gated complexes, so a clear landmark helps a new tutor. Kanjurmarg has its own Central line station and mostly newer complexes with gate registration. Across the creek, Ghansoli mixes planned sectors with an older village area, and tutors from Thane or Vashi can arrive on the Trans-Harbour line.
Before Class 1, see nursery and KG tutors in Mumbai; after Class 5, Class 6 to 8 tutors pick up the middle-school years. Subject pages for maths and English in Mumbai help if one subject is the main worry. Tell us the class, board, school medium, locality and nearest station; we send two or three tutors with fees shown. Book a free demo or browse every locality on our page of home tutors in Mumbai.
Usually all of them for Classes 1 to 5: reading and English, maths, EVS and the second and third languages, such as Hindi or Marathi. The tutor should put most of the time into reading with understanding and confident arithmetic, because the other subjects improve once those are secure. Tell us which subjects worry you most.
Two or three a week is enough for most primary children, each 45 minutes to an hour. Daily tuition at this age leaves too little time for play and rest, and can make school feel endless. If a gap is serious, add a short reading routine with a parent rather than more sessions.
Yes, if you ask for it. Maharashtra State Board schools teach in Marathi, English and other media, and the tutor should work from your child's textbooks in the school's medium. Tell us the medium of instruction when you request a tutor, and we shortlist people comfortable teaching in that language.
Homework help is useful, but it should not fill the whole session. A good split is reading aloud first, then teaching the weak skill, then the day's homework with your child doing the writing. Otherwise the underlying gap in reading or maths stays open while the worksheets get done.
Yes. For IB PYP, look for a tutor who supports inquiry and presentation without doing the project; the final year includes the Exhibition. For Cambridge Primary, check whether the school uses the optional Checkpoint assessments. Tell us the curriculum and school year, and we shortlist tutors who know that approach.
For Classes 1 to 3, home tuition works much better because the tutor needs to hear reading and watch writing. From Class 4, short online sessions can work for a focused need, with a parent nearby. In Mumbai, online is also a useful monsoon fallback when trains are disrupted, so agree on it early.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour, and primary tuition usually sits in the lower part of that range. All-subject teaching, long journeys or international curricula can raise it. Each tutor sets their own fee, and you see it before the free demo class.
