Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Middle school is where Mumbai children quietly split into those who will find Class 9 manageable and those who will meet it with gaps. Fractions become algebra, science starts to ask "why" and "how much", a third language arrives, and the timetable fills with projects. Because nothing in these three years is a public exam, problems are easy to postpone. This guide, by Aaditya Kashyap, who writes on CBSE and ICSE science, and the NXTutors Academic Team, covers what changes in Class 6, how the state board, CBSE, ICSE, IB MYP and Cambridge Lower Secondary handle these years, which subjects deserve a tutor, and how to arrange sessions around Mumbai's school vans and trains.
The jump is not only in difficulty. Three things change at once, and a tutor who sees all three can head off most of the trouble:
A child who coasted through primary school can struggle with the third point most. Often the gap is not understanding but organisation, and that is something a tutor can teach directly.
None of the boards Mumbai families follow sets a public exam in these years, but each shapes the course differently. A tutor should know which one they are working with before planning anything.
| Board | Key features for Classes 6–8 | Tutor's focus |
|---|---|---|
| Maharashtra State Board | Taught in Marathi, English and other media; the board's own exam comes later, as the SSC at the end of Standard 10 | Textbook-based teaching in the school's medium; neat, complete written answers |
| CBSE | Three-language framework (R1, R2, R3), two of them native to India; R3 compulsory from Class 6 from 2026-27; new NCERT books such as Ganita Prakash in maths and Curiosity in science | Following the new books closely; keeping the third language on track |
| ICSE | Schools choose the books up to Class 8; a third language is required from at least Class 5 to Class 8, examined internally | Matching the school's book list; strong English writing |
| IB MYP | A five-year programme for ages 11 to 16, eight subject groups, at least 50 teaching hours per group each year; a community project for students finishing in Year 3 or 4 | Understanding the assessment criteria; guiding long tasks without doing them |
| Cambridge Lower Secondary | Typically ages 11 to 14, more than ten subjects; Checkpoint is optional | Building toward IGCSE habits; checking whether Checkpoint is taken |
Families thinking about a board change before Class 9 should read our pages on the Maharashtra State Board in Mumbai, CBSE, ICSE, IB and IGCSE tutors, and our guide to switching boards.
| Subject | Common trouble spot | What a tutor does about it |
|---|---|---|
| Maths | Fractions and ratios that were never secure; the first steps of algebra; word problems | Rebuilds fraction sense with diagrams, then moves to equations slowly with many short problems |
| Science | Answers that name things but do not explain them; early numericals on speed or density | Asks "why" after every answer; uses simple home experiments and labelled diagrams |
| English | Short, flat paragraphs; grammar right in exercises but wrong in writing | Regular short compositions with feedback; reading beyond the textbook |
| Social science | Too much to remember, no structure | Timelines, maps and a weekly reading routine; a tutor only if far behind |
| Languages | The second or third language is neglected until exam week | Fifteen minutes a day of reading and writing, set as routine |
Most children need help in maths, science or both. Our national guides to Class 7 maths and Class 8 science go chapter by chapter. For a child who is already comfortable and wants more challenge, Olympiads are a better stretch than extra tuition; see our Olympiad preparation guide.
Aaditya Kashyap's subject, science, shows the point clearly: the Class 9 course assumes a student can read a chapter, pick out what matters and explain it in their own words. Classes 6 to 8 are the time to build that. A middle-school tutor should be working towards:
By Class 8, the tutor should be doing less and the child more. If the sessions still look like the tutor solving while the child watches, ask for a change of approach.
Middle school brings a steady stream of projects, models, charts and, on the IB route, MYP tasks marked against published criteria. Parents sometimes hope the tutor will take these off their hands. A good tutor will not. The right kind of help is to break the task into stages with dates, explain what the marking criteria or teacher's instructions are asking for, suggest where to look for information, and review a draft by asking questions. The wrong kind is choosing the topic, writing the text or building the model. Apart from the honesty problem, a child who never plans a project alone in Class 7 meets far bigger ones in Class 9 without the skills to manage them.
Middle-schoolers often come home later than younger children, after clubs or a long van route, so slots tend to be early evening, which is exactly when stations and link roads are busiest. Plan with the route in mind:
| Zone | How a tutor usually arrives | Slot advice |
|---|---|---|
| Worli, Dadar & Central | Parel on the Central line or Prabhadevi on the Western line | Keep clear of the office crowds at station areas |
| Andheri & Jogeshwari | Line 7 to Jogeshwari (East) or Mogra; Western and Harbour trains to Jogeshwari | The link road towards Vikhroli is heavy at office hours |
| Kandivali, Borivali & Dahisar | Line 7 along the highway, or a bus from Kandivali station | Township gates may check visitors twice; register once |
| Bhandup & Mulund | Central line to Bhandup or Mulund, then an auto | The old Agra Road is slow at peak hours; start a little later |
| Thane | Walk from Thane station into the older lanes beside it | Late afternoon or weekends beat the station rush |
| Navi Mumbai | Harbour or Trans-Harbour trains, then a short auto into the sector | Roads to the highway are slower in the office rush |
By Class 7 or 8, many children work well online for one or two sessions a week, particularly for maths practice or language work. Home tuition still suits a child who drifts on a screen, needs help organising notebooks, or is doing science activities that need materials. The tutor must be able to see written working, through a tablet, a shared whiteboard or a camera pointed at the notebook.
A Mumbai-specific reason to keep online in reserve: during heavy monsoon rain, a tutor on the local train may not arrive. A standing agreement to switch to a video session that day saves the week. For a fuller comparison, see online versus offline tutoring.
The first class with your chosen tutor is a free demo. Use it to see whether the tutor diagnoses before teaching:
If the fit is wrong, the next tutor on your shortlist can give a demo of their own, and switching later is free. Tutors who join go through an ID check before their profile is marked Verified.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. For middle school, the fee depends on whether one tutor covers several subjects, your board, how far the tutor travels at your slot and how many sessions you book. Each tutor sets their own fee, and you see it before the demo. The pricing guide and home tuition fees in Mumbai give more detail.
In Parel, where older chawls sit beside new towers on former mill land, tutors come by the Central line or from Prabhadevi on the Western side. Jogeshwari East follows the link road towards Vikhroli, and Line 7 stations along the highway make it reachable from Borivali or Andheri. In Kandivali East, Thakur Village is a planned township of gated societies, so the tutor should be on the visitor list before the first session.
On the Central line, Bhandup has many families in large complexes built on former industrial land, with simpler entry in older buildings near the station. In Thane, Naupada sits right beside the station, so a tutor arriving by train can walk in. Across the creek, Sanpada is Navi Mumbai's smallest node, compact enough for a tutor to walk from the station.

Subjects separate, ideas become more abstract, and teachers expect a child to read, plan and revise alone. Many children who coasted through primary school are not struggling with understanding but with organisation. A tutor who teaches planning, a mistakes notebook and reading before the lesson often fixes more than extra chapter practice does.
Maths and science for most children. Maths gaps usually go back to fractions and ratios, and early algebra exposes them. In science, answers that name things without explaining them lose marks. English writing, social science and languages usually need a routine more than a tutor, unless the child is far behind.
No. The Maharashtra State Board's first public exam is the SSC at the end of Standard 10, and CBSE, ICSE, IB MYP and Cambridge Lower Secondary have no public exam in these years either; Cambridge Checkpoint is optional. That is why gaps are easy to postpone, and why fixing them now pays off later.
CBSE uses a three-language framework, R1, R2 and R3, with two of the three native to India, and the third language is compulsory from Class 6 with effect from 2026-27. NCERT's new books such as Ganita Prakash in maths and Curiosity in science are also in use. A tutor should know both changes.
Yes, at this level one capable tutor often covers both well, and it keeps the week simpler. Check in the demo that the tutor explains science reasons, not just facts, and catches fraction gaps in maths. By Class 8, if one subject is clearly weaker, a specialist for that subject may serve better.
Many can, for one or two focused sessions a week, if the tutor can see the notebook through a tablet, whiteboard or camera. Home tuition suits children who drift on screens or need help organising. Online is also a useful fallback on heavy monsoon days when local trains are disrupted.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour, with senior classes, international boards and entrance work toward the upper end. For middle school the fee depends on the subjects covered, the board, travel at your slot and frequency. You see each shortlisted tutor's fee before the free demo.
