Tutors who join go through an ID check. Tell us the class, board and your area: we share two or three matched tutors, each with their fee, and the first class is a free demo, at home or online.
Book a free demo classAcross NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.
Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

In most cities the case for online tuition is about choice. In Mumbai it is also about the map. A tutor two suburbs away can be a very long trip from your door if the journey means changing lines, crossing the tracks or the creek at rush hour, while a specialist in another state is one click away. This guide from the NXTutors Academic Team covers when an online tutor is the better choice for a Mumbai, Thane or Navi Mumbai student, when it is not, how online lessons are arranged through NXTutors, what your child needs on the desk, and how to combine online sessions with home visits from the same person.
Mumbai suburbs sit along separate railway corridors. A Borivali tutor can reach Kandivali easily, but a lesson in Chembur means a change and a long ride, and a tutor in Thane rarely wants a weekday trip to Bandra. Online removes the corridor problem entirely, so you choose on teaching quality rather than on which side of the city someone happens to live.
IB Higher Level, Cambridge IGCSE or A Level, ISC maths and other narrow papers have few specialists in any one zone. Requiring that person to travel to your building at 6 pm shrinks the list further. Online opens it to the whole country. Our IB and IGCSE pages for Mumbai explain what a specialist should know.
Some localities have no suburban station: the Ghodbunder Road townships, Powai, Juhu and parts of Navi Mumbai away from the line. Tutors get there by auto, bus or two-wheeler, and a long last leg is the first thing to slip in a busy week. Here online, or a mix, keeps the timetable steady.
Class 11 and 12 students often have college, coaching and travel back to back. A focused forty-five minutes at 8.30 pm on a screen is realistic; a tutor visiting at that hour usually is not. See our JEE and NEET pages for Mumbai for how tutoring fits around coaching.
Then there is the weather. June to September are the monsoon months, and a heavy-rain evening can make any journey slow or unsafe. Families with a home tutor do well to agree, from the first week, that those lessons move online at the same time; families who are online already lose nothing.
None of these rules out online for good. A younger child can switch once the habits are set, and a student new to a board can go online after the first month.
| Situation | Usually suits | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Primary child, tutor available on your line | Home | Close supervision; short trip for the tutor |
| Class 9 or 10, SSC, CBSE or ICSE, focused student | Online or both | Wider choice of board specialists; no evening travel |
| Junior college student with coaching | Online on weekdays, a home visit at the weekend | Fits late evenings; weekend trains are calmer |
| IB, IGCSE, A Level or ISC specialist paper | Online | Specialists are thin in any single zone |
| Ghodbunder Road, Powai or an outer Navi Mumbai node | Both | One visit a week, the rest online, avoids the long last leg |
| Tutor and family on opposite sides of the creek | Online | A peak-hour crossing every lesson does not last |
| Any home tutor, June to September | Home, with an online fallback | Heavy-rain days move online at the usual time |
The home tutor or online tutor comparison goes through the trade-offs one by one.
You may meet online tutors even when you searched for home tuition. When few local tutors fit a Mumbai request, the home search widens to the rest of Maharashtra and then to tutors elsewhere in India who teach online, and every card says where that tutor is based. Neighbourhood pages work the same way: tutors in the area first, then the zone, then the city, then online. So an online name on the list is not a mistake; it usually means the specialist you asked for does not live within easy reach, and it is worth a look before you widen the search yourself.
Tutors who join go through an ID check before their profile is marked Verified; it is not a police or background check, so judge the teaching yourself in the demo.
The equipment matters most for subjects with working: maths, physics, chemistry and accountancy. The tutor has to watch the pen move, not wait for a photo of the answer.
Test all of it in the free demo. If the tutor cannot follow your child's working clearly, sort that before the first paid lesson. The article on online versus offline tutoring has more practical tips.
Watch the demo and the first few classes for these signs. Your child talks and writes more than the tutor does. Errors are caught mid-step, with a question rather than a correction. Both cameras stay on. Past papers or the school's own tests are used, not generic worksheets. And the class ends with a written note of what was done and what to practise. A tutor who reads from slides for an hour is giving a webinar, not tuition. Our demo class checklist for parents lists further questions to ask.
The most common Mumbai arrangement is not purely one or the other. With a tutor who can travel to you sometimes, try one of these:
Keep the same person across both formats wherever you can. Continuity matters more than the format does.
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Online takes the journey out, and in Mumbai the journey can be the biggest hidden cost, so the same tutor may quote less online. An experienced specialist may charge much the same either way. Class, board, subject and how many sessions a week move the figure more than the format. Fees are shown before the demo; see the Mumbai home tuition fees guide and our pricing guide.
Tell us the class, board and subjects, whether you want online only or home plus online, your locality and station if visits are part of it, and the evenings that work. To see who teaches near you first, open a neighbourhood page such as Tardeo, Juhu, Lokhandwala, Kanjurmarg, Kasarvadavali or Panvel; each one lists local tutors and then online options.
Book a free demo class, browse online tutors, or start from our Mumbai home tutors page with its eleven zones. Parents who would prefer a woman teacher can read female home tutors in Mumbai, and commerce students can see commerce tutors in Mumbai.
When the right tutor lives on another railway line or across the creek, when your child needs a narrow specialist such as IB Higher Level or IGCSE, when your home has no nearby station, or when junior college and coaching leave only late evenings. Online removes the journey, so you choose the tutor on teaching quality alone.
Choose Online under the home page search, or type online with the subject and class. Distance then stops counting, so tutors from any city can appear. Find Tutors set to online lets you add board, class, a fee limit, experience, rating and tutor gender. The demo form also has a Mode field for online.
Yes. Pick online in the Mode field of the demo request and add the class, board and times that suit you. We send two or three tutors with their fees, and the first class with the one you choose is a free lesson on screen. The tutor and your family agree the video tool and how written work is shown.
A laptop or tablet, a headset with a microphone, and a way for the tutor to see the notebook live: a phone on a stand pointing down at the page, or a stylus tablet. Add a shared whiteboard, a table in the main room and a mobile hotspot for evenings when the building connection fails.
Yes, and many families do. A common pattern is one visit at the weekend for new chapters and handwritten practice, with online sessions midweek for doubts and homework. Others keep home lessons in the dry months and switch online on heavy-rain days. Keeping one tutor across both formats matters more than the format.
Usually not as the main format. Children up to about Class 5 learn reading, handwriting and early number work most easily with someone beside them watching the pencil. Short online sessions with a parent nearby can help with reading practice or revision, and an older child can move online once good study habits are in place.
Sometimes. Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Online removes the journey, which can lower a quote, though experienced specialists may charge similar rates.
