Class 11 in Mumbai often means a new building as well as a new syllabus. Many State Board students move into a junior college after the SSC, with larger classes and a different timetable, while CBSE, ISC, IB and Cambridge students stay on in school but face a steep jump in difficulty. Add the entrance tests that start to matter now, JEE, NEET and Maharashtra's own MHT CET, and the first term decides a great deal. A Mumbai science student may sit one, two or all three. They share the physics, chemistry and maths or biology of Classes 11 and 12, but reward different habits. Patterns are published afresh each year; the table uses the 2026 documents as a guide only.

Because MHT CET has no negative marking while JEE (Main) does, the same student needs two different answering habits. A tutor can teach a chapter once, properly, and then practise it in both styles. One or two subject tutors is the realistic maximum. More than that, alongside college and coaching, removes the self-study time that actually improves marks.
For students outside the science streams, CUET (UG), conducted by the National Testing Agency, is used for undergraduate admission to Central Universities and participating universities. Class 11 is too early to drill for it, but not too early to read widely, practise structured writing and keep maths or applied maths strong if it is part of the course.
