What home tuition costs in Mumbai

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Tutors set their own fee, and you see each tutor's fee before the demo class.

Monthly example: 3 one-hour classes a week ≈ ₹9,600–₹32,500 a month (12–13 classes at ₹800–₹2,500 an hour). An example, not a quote: your tutor's own fee decides the real figure.

Biology tuition in Mumbai: junior college, CBSE, ISC, NEET and the international boards

Biology is the subject where Mumbai families most often discover, some time in Class 11, that school alone is not quite enough. The syllabus doubles in depth, the diagrams become detailed, and for a student aiming at medicine the same chapters must be learnt again for NEET, where biology carries half the paper. A good biology tutor turns that volume into a system: explained, drawn, recalled, tested. This page covers how each board in the city examines biology, including the State Board in general terms, what changes for NEET, how a senior biology tutor gets to your neighbourhood, and how to judge one in a free demo class.

How does each Mumbai board examine biology?

Name the board and the class in your request. A biology tutor who knows ISC practical files may never have prepared a student for the IGCSE alternative to practical paper, and the two call for quite different practice.

Biology on the boards taught across Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai
Board and levelShape of the assessmentWhat the tutor must bring
Maharashtra State Board, HSC (Classes 11–12)Biology taught from the board's own textbooks, usually at a junior college; theory and practical scheme published by the boardCommand of the state textbook and the board's own question papers
CBSE Classes 11–12 (044)Three-hour theory paper of 70 marks plus a 30-mark practical each yearUnit-by-unit NCERT depth and answer-writing to the marking scheme
ICSE Class 10Biology examined as its own paper, with internal assessmentPrecise definitions and fully labelled diagrams
ISC Class 12 (863)Theory 70, practical 15, project 10, practical file 5Detail in long answers, and a plan for the project and file
Cambridge IGCSE (0610)Multiple choice, theory, and a practical test or alternative to practical worth 20%; Core or Extended tierPast-paper practice on experimental method questions
Edexcel International GCSE (4BI1)Two written papers, untiered, graded 9 to 1; practical skills tested in writingKnowing which content appears only in the second paper
IB Diploma, SL or HLFour linked themes; papers 80%, scientific investigation 20%Data analysis and guidance that leaves the investigation the student's own

Students choosing between science streams before Class 11 may find our Class 11 stream choice guide useful, and families deciding between the two IGCSE boards can read Cambridge or Edexcel IGCSE.

What should an HSC biology tutor offer a junior college student?

The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education conducts the HSC examination at the end of Class 12. Biology in Classes 11 and 12 follows the board's own syllabus and textbooks, and the board sets out how theory and practical work are assessed; take that scheme from its official website or from the junior college, not from an older guidebook.

What we look for in an HSC biology tutor is practical rather than technical. They should teach from the state textbook your child actually uses, know how the board phrases questions from its past papers, and keep the practical record on schedule alongside theory. Many junior college students are preparing for an entrance test at the same time, so the tutor should be able to show which parts of the week serve the board and which serve the entrance paper, rather than letting one quietly crowd out the other.

Where do CBSE and ISC biology marks sit?

For CBSE, the 2026-27 curriculum gives Class 12 theory five units: Genetics and Evolution carries 20 of the 70 marks, Reproduction 16, Biology and Human Welfare 12, Biotechnology 12 and Ecology 10. In Class 11, Human Physiology is the heaviest unit at 18. Genetics is where students most often stall, because inheritance crosses and molecular genetics need reasoning, not memory, so a tutor should reach it early and return to it weekly. The 30 practical marks come from experiments, spotting, the record and a project with viva, all conducted in school.

ISC biology in Class 12 weights its units differently: Reproduction 16, Genetics and Evolution 15, Ecology and Environment 15, Biology and Human Welfare 14 and Biotechnology 10. Answers are expected to name structures and use exact terms, and the syllabus asks for structures to be taught with diagrams. Students arriving from ICSE know the style; the step up is in quantity.

What changes when the student is also sitting NEET?

NEET (UG) is conducted by the National Testing Agency. Under the 2026 information bulletin, candidates answered 180 compulsory multiple-choice questions in 180 minutes, 90 of them in biology split between botany and zoology, for a total of 720 marks, with four marks for a correct answer and one deducted for a wrong one. Biology was also the first subject used to break ties. The National Medical Commission notifies the syllabus, and the 2027 bulletin had not been released at the time of writing, so check neet.nta.nic.in before relying on any detail.

Maharashtra also holds its own state entrance test, the MHT CET, conducted by the State CET Cell; take its syllabus and dates only from the official notice. For tuition, the practical difference between board and entrance biology is speed and exactness: NEET punishes a half-remembered fact, so the tutor tests NCERT lines, diagrams and tables, analyses each mock by chapter, and keeps board-style long answers going in parallel. Our NEET home tutor page explains how we match for the whole paper, and the NEET biology, NCERT first guide goes chapter by chapter.

What does a good week of biology tuition look like?

For a Class 11 or 12 student with two sessions a week, a sound pattern looks roughly like this:

  1. Session one, new content. The tutor explains one process, such as the cardiac cycle or DNA replication; the student draws and labels it, then explains it back in their own words.
  2. Between sessions. Short written answers set by the tutor, plus one blank diagram to fill from memory.
  3. Session two, recall and exam work. The diagram is redrawn without notes, answers are marked against the board's scheme for exact terms, and ten minutes go to an older chapter so it is not forgotten.
  4. Every few weeks. A timed section, or for NEET students a set of objective questions, with every error logged by cause.

If a month passes with no redrawn diagrams and no marked answers, raise it with the tutor, or ask us for another one from your shortlist at no cost.

How does a senior biology tutor get to your neighbourhood?

Senior biology specialists are fewer than general science tutors, so in Mumbai the realistic pool is often set by the railway line a tutor lives on. We check the line first, then the last stretch from the station.

  • Island city and the central belt. Worli, Dadar and Central Mumbai has unusually dense rail links: Dadar is on both main lines, and Sion, on the Central line where the highways head north, suits tutors from the eastern suburbs. Further south, South Mumbai is reached from the north by the Western line or the underground Line 3.
  • Western line. In Bandra, Khar and Santacruz, the east side, including Santacruz East, is served by Line 3's Santacruz station on the highway. In Goregaon and Malad, Line 2A runs along Link Road past Bangur Nagar, so a tutor from Dahisar or Andheri can often come with one metro ride.
  • Central and Harbour lines. Chembur, Ghatkopar and Powai splits between the Harbour line for Chembur and the Central line for Ghatkopar, Kanjurmarg and Vikhroli, where complexes usually need gate registration.
  • Thane. In Thane, homes near the station are an easy walk, but Majiwada and the Ghodbunder Road townships have no station yet, and Majiwada junction is among the slowest points at rush hour. A tutor from your own part of the corridor keeps the slot far more reliably.
  • Navi Mumbai. Navi Mumbai's nodes are linked by the Harbour and Trans-Harbour lines, and the Navi Mumbai metro runs from CBD Belapur through Kharghar. Giving node, sector and building number makes the first visit simple.

Neighbourhood pages for all of these are on our Mumbai home tuition page, and the central suburbs guide and South and Central Mumbai guide add more local detail.

Is biology better taught at home or online in Mumbai?

Both work for senior students. Online suits NEET mock analysis, IB data questions and any specialist who lives on a different line; diagrams can be drawn on a tablet or held up to the camera. Home tuition suits a student who loses focus on screen, and it lets the tutor see the practical record and project on paper. A common Mumbai arrangement is one home session a week with the same tutor taking a second, shorter session online for tests and doubts, which saves a second journey through evening traffic.

What should the biology demo class show you?

The first class is a free demo. Ask for it to be on a chapter your child finds difficult, and look for:

  • Questions to find out what your child already knows before any teaching starts.
  • A diagram drawn and labelled by the student, not only by the tutor.
  • Knowledge of your child's exact course: HSC practical work, CBSE unit weights, the ISC project, the NEET pattern, the IGCSE tier or the IB investigation.
  • One written answer corrected for terminology and order of steps, not just for facts.
  • A clear plan for revisiting earlier chapters.

The demo class checklist lists more questions to ask. If the fit is wrong, we arrange a demo with the next tutor on your list.

What does a biology home tutor in Mumbai charge?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Senior biology and NEET tuition usually sit in that upper part, and the fee also depends on the tutor's journey at your chosen hour and how many sessions you book each week. Tutors set their own fees and you see every one on your shortlist before the demo. See the Mumbai home tuition fees guide.

How do you start with a biology tutor?

Tell us the class, the board or exam, the chapters that worry your child, your neighbourhood and nearest station, the times that work, and a budget. We send two or three matched biology tutors with their fees; you choose one for a free demo class, and you can switch later at no cost. Biology teachers in the city can find students on the Mumbai tuition jobs page.

Biology Home Tutor in Mumbai: common questions

Can you find an HSC biology tutor for a junior college student in Mumbai?

Yes. We look for tutors who teach Classes 11 and 12 biology from the Maharashtra State Board's own textbooks and practise with the board's past papers. Tell us whether your child is also preparing for an entrance test, so board work and entrance practice can be planned together. Confirm the current assessment scheme on the board's website.

Which CBSE Class 12 biology unit carries the most marks?

Genetics and Evolution, with 20 of the 70 theory marks in the 2026-27 curriculum, followed by Reproduction at 16. Biology and Human Welfare and Biotechnology carry 12 each, and Ecology 10. Genetics needs reasoning as well as recall, so a tutor should start it early and set inheritance problems every week.

How much of NEET is biology?

Half. Under the NEET (UG) 2026 bulletin, 90 of the 180 questions were biology, split between botany and zoology, in a 720-mark paper with four marks for a correct answer and one deducted for a wrong one. Biology was also used first to break ties. Check neet.nta.nic.in for the 2027 details once published.

Can one tutor handle both board biology and NEET?

Often, yes, because both rest on the same textbook content. The tutor should split each week clearly: objective question practice and mock analysis for NEET, plus board-style written answers with exact terms and diagrams. If the student attends coaching, the tutor can work through coaching sheets and wrong answers instead of adding new material.

We live near Majiwada in Thane. Will a biology tutor travel here?

It depends on where the tutor lives. The Ghodbunder Road corridor has no suburban station yet, and Majiwada junction is slow at rush hour, so a tutor from your own stretch of Thane keeps the slot most reliably. If no senior biology specialist is close, we suggest online lessons or a mix of home and online.

Do you have IGCSE and IB biology tutors in Mumbai?

Yes, at home where a specialist can reach you, and online otherwise. Tell us whether the course is Cambridge 0610, Edexcel 4BI1 or IB Biology at SL or HL. Cambridge includes a practical or alternative to practical paper worth 20%, and IB includes a scientific investigation that the student must write on their own.

How much does a biology home tutor in Mumbai cost?

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour, with Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET toward the upper end. Senior and NEET biology usually sits in that upper part. The tutor sets the fee, and you see every shortlisted tutor's fee before the free demo class.
