Home Tuition in Mumbai's Central Suburbs: Chembur to Mulund
The central suburbs follow the Central line north from Sion to the Thane boundary, with the old Agra Road running close to the tracks on the west and the Eastern Express Highway on the east. Homes here range from older bungalows and planned colonies in Chembur to high-rise gated complexes around Powai Lake and on former industrial land in Bhandup, so the gate routine for a tutor changes a great deal from one locality to the next.
This guide covers two zones: Chembur, Ghatkopar and Powai, and Bhandup and Mulund. It sets out which station serves each locality, how tutors from the western suburbs cross over, what to expect at the gate and how to time a weekday class.
How do the two zones compare?
| Zone | Stations tutors use | Roads that shape timing | Typical homes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chembur, Ghatkopar and Powai | Chembur and Tilak Nagar (Harbour); Ghatkopar, Vikhroli and Kanjurmarg (Central); Metro Line 1 at Ghatkopar | Eastern Express Highway, Eastern Freeway, Santacruz–Chembur Link Road, Jogeshwari–Vikhroli Link Road | Bungalows and colonies in Chembur, redeveloped societies in Ghatkopar, high-rise gated complexes in Powai |
| Bhandup and Mulund | Bhandup, Nahur and Mulund (Central) | The old Agra Road, Eastern Express Highway, the Mulund–Airoli Bridge approach | Gated complexes on former industrial land, older buildings near the stations, grid-street apartments in Mulund |
Chembur, Ghatkopar and Powai
The first section of the Harbour line, between Kurla and Reay Road, opened on 12 December 1910, and the line now serves Chembur and Tilak Nagar. Metro Line 1 opened on 8 June 2014 between Versova and Ghatkopar, meeting the Central line at Ghatkopar. By road, the Eastern Freeway links South Mumbai with the Eastern Express Highway at Chembur and opened in full on 16 June 2014; the Santacruz–Chembur Link Road opened on 18 April 2014; and the Jogeshwari–Vikhroli Link Road passes Powai Lake and Kanjurmarg on its way to the Eastern Express Highway at Vikhroli.
- Chembur: on the north-western part of the former Trombay Island, Chembur grew after Partition and now has older bungalows, planned colonies and modern apartment buildings in Chembur Camp, Pestom Sagar and Tilak Nagar. Many bungalows and older buildings mean the tutor walks straight to the door, while newer societies register visitors. Tutors come by Harbour line train or along the highway, then take a short auto.
- Ghatkopar: split by the railway into Ghatkopar East, including Pant Nagar and Garodia Nagar, and Ghatkopar West. Older societies sit beside new towers rising through redevelopment. The wide footbridge from the Central line station to Metro Line 1 lets a tutor from Andheri or Versova arrive without changing at Dadar. Guest parking in older buildings is tight, and the station area is crowded at peak hours.
- Vikhroli: divided into East and West, with Tagore Nagar, Kannamwar Nagar and Park Site among its residential areas, and large industrial and business land alongside. Vikhroli station on the Central line is the usual arrival point. Larger complexes register visitors, and the link road and the old Agra Road are slow at office hours, so start a little after the evening rush.
- Powai: built around Powai Lake, with a large planned township of tall towers, government residential colonies, offices and institutions. There is no suburban station; Kanjurmarg on the Central line is the main access, followed by an auto. Gated complexes almost always need registration and guest parking is limited. Avoid office start and finish times on the link road, and consider online tutoring for specialist subjects.
- Kanjurmarg: named after the old Kanjur village and split into East and West, with apartments in many newer complexes. Kanjurmarg station, built in 1968, gives tutors a direct stop for the locality as well as for Powai. Share the tutor's name and flat number with the gate in advance.
Bhandup and Mulund
North of Kanjur Marg, the Central line stops at Bhandup, Nahur and Mulund before Thane. The old Agra Road runs from Sion to Thane through Kurla, Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, Kanjurmarg, Bhandup and Mulund, and is the main road of Bhandup West, while Bhandup East is flanked by the Eastern Express Highway. Mulund was laid out from 1922 on a grid of streets running from the railway station to Panch Rasta. The Mulund–Airoli Bridge links Mulund with Navi Mumbai. Metro Line 4, from Wadala towards Kasarvadavali, is under construction along this corridor and does not yet carry passengers.
- Bhandup: former industrial land turned into large housing complexes, alongside older buildings near the station. Most tutors come by Central line train and take an auto. Complexes set back from the old Agra Road need gate registration and have little guest parking; older buildings near the station are simpler. An evening class starts more reliably after the office rush.
- Mulund: the last suburb before Thane, divided into East and West, with residential apartments and established colonies and the national park on its north-western side. The grid streets make homes easy to find from the station on foot or by auto. Societies usually have a watchman who records visitors. Mulund West is the busier side at peak hours, so plan a slot around the junctions there.
How do tutors cross from the western suburbs?
If the right specialist lives on the western side, the east-west links decide how easily they can reach you.
- Metro Line 1 runs from Versova and Andheri to Ghatkopar, so a tutor from the Andheri side can reach Ghatkopar directly and continue by Central line train or auto.
- The Jogeshwari–Vikhroli Link Road connects Jogeshwari with Powai, Kanjurmarg and Vikhroli by road. It is among the city's busiest roads, so a tutor who drives it needs an off-peak slot.
- The Santacruz–Chembur Link Road joins the Western and Eastern Express Highways, which helps a tutor from Santacruz or Bandra East reach Chembur.
- Metro Line 6, from Lokhandwala towards Vikhroli, is under construction and does not yet carry passengers.
If none of these fits your timetable, an online tutor for the specialist subject plus a local home tutor for the rest often works better than a long weekday trip.
When is a weekday class easiest to keep?
- Soon after school, before office traffic builds on the Eastern Express Highway, the link roads and the old Agra Road.
- After the evening rush, where the tutor comes by Central or Harbour line train and walks the last stretch.
- Weekend mornings in Powai and Vikhroli, where weekday evenings on the link road are hardest.

Frequently asked questions
Which station should a tutor use for Powai?
A tutor coming to Powai should use Kanjurmarg station on the Central line, because Powai has no suburban station of its own, and then take an auto around the lake. Tutors who drive in usually use the Jogeshwari–Vikhroli Link Road, which is busy at office hours, so an off-peak class slot helps.
Can a tutor from Andheri reach Ghatkopar easily?
Yes, a tutor from Andheri can reach Ghatkopar easily on Metro Line 1, which runs from Versova through Andheri to Ghatkopar. A wide footbridge links the metro to the Central line station, so a tutor from the western suburbs need not change at Dadar. From there they walk or take an auto into Ghatkopar East or West.
Is Metro Line 4 open in Bhandup and Mulund?
No, Metro Line 4 is not yet open in Bhandup and Mulund; the line from Wadala towards Kasarvadavali is still under construction along this corridor. For now tutors take a Central line train to Bhandup, Nahur or Mulund station and walk or take an auto, or come by road along the Eastern Express Highway.
Do gated complexes in Bhandup and Powai need tutor registration?
Yes, gated complexes in Bhandup and Powai almost always need tutor registration at the gate, and they often have little guest parking. Send the tutor's name and flat number to security before the free demo class. Suggest the tutor comes by train and auto, which is usually simpler than finding a parking space inside.
How much does home tuition cost in Mumbai's central suburbs?
Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more. Each tutor in Chembur, Ghatkopar, Powai, Bhandup or Mulund sets their own fee, which you see before the free demo.
When is a weekday class easiest to keep in Chembur, Ghatkopar or Mulund?
A weekday class in Chembur, Ghatkopar or Mulund is easiest to keep soon after school, before office traffic builds on the main roads. Those are the Eastern Express Highway, the link roads and the old Agra Road. Another option is after the evening rush, when the tutor comes by train and walks the last stretch. In Powai and Vikhroli, weekend mornings are often easier.
