English tutor jobs in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai

English in Mumbai means something different in almost every household. For an ICSE student it is prescribed literature and long, precise answers; for an IB student it is close reading and commentary; for a child in a Marathi-medium State Board school it is a subject paper in a language they do not use in other lessons. A good English tutor here has to work out, in the first conversation, which of these English problems the family actually has.

Open tuition requests in Mumbai for english

No open english requests in Mumbai right now. New family requests appear here as they come in; join now so they can reach you.

That variety is why English requests reach tutors with very different backgrounds: literature graduates, former school teachers, and people who teach writing for a living. This page covers the boards that ask for English in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai, how to plan your travel along the rail and metro lines, what families expect, and how to win the student in the free demo.

Who asks for english tutors in Mumbai

CISCE's ICSE in Class 10 and ISC in Class 12 include prescribed literature in English, and the papers reward long, exact answers drawn from the set texts. Families with ICSE and ISC children are often the most specific about what they want: someone who knows the current set texts, can teach a student to quote and analyse, and will set timed written answers well before the board. Finishing the literature early and using winter for full papers is the pacing that suits them.

The Maharashtra State Board recognises both Marathi- and English-medium schools, and that changes the job. An English-medium SSC student needs help with literature, grammar and writing tasks from the state's own textbooks. A Marathi-medium student may need English taught more slowly, with attention to sentence building and reading for meaning. CBSE students work from their prescribed books and the board's sample papers on cbseacademic.nic.in, where grammar, writing formats and literature answers each carry marks. Say on your profile which of these you can teach.

International families add a different kind of request. IGCSE English, Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel, turns on command words and on past papers marked against the official scheme. IB students in the PYP, MYP or Diploma need tutors who can coach reading, commentary and essay method without writing anything for them. Younger children in any board often want reading with understanding and neat, confident writing, the foundations that every later paper rests on.

Where in Mumbai the work is

English is one of the subjects where a home tutor can build a very compact round. Housing in Worli, Dadar & Central Mumbai ranges from walk-up buildings in Dadar, Matunga and Sion to towers with strict visitor desks in Worli and Lower Parel, and Matunga alone has a station on each of the three suburban lines. Bandra, Khar & Santacruz is split by the Western line into a sea side and an east side served by Line 3, so a tutor living on one side can fill an evening without crossing.

South Mumbai's towers usually have a staffed lobby desk, so the family gives your name to building staff before the demo; Line 3 now runs through to Cuffe Parade from the airport side. Further north, Chembur, Ghatkopar & Powai mixes Chembur's bungalows with Powai's gated complexes. Literature and essay work moves comfortably online, so a tutor in Thane or Navi Mumbai can teach a South Mumbai student without the journey.

What families in Mumbai expect

  • Knowledge of the set texts and paper format for each board you list: ICSE and ISC literature, SSC textbooks, CBSE sections, IGCSE command words.
  • Patience to teach English to a Marathi-medium student at the pace they need, if you take those requests.
  • Marking that explains why an answer lost marks, written on the student's own work.
  • Timed answer practice well before preliminary and board exams.
  • For IB, clear limits: coach the method of commentary and essays, never write any part of them.
  • A reading habit built into the week for younger children, with short checks on understanding.
  • Reliable timing, and a willingness to move a lesson online on rain-heavy evenings.

How to get picked

Your profile should say which boards and classes you teach and whether you focus on literature, language or both. If you teach SSC English to Marathi-medium students, or can explain in Marathi or Hindi when a child is stuck, say so; that is a real reason for a parent to pick you. List your zones by train line and add the hours you keep free.

In the demo, read a short passage with the student and ask them to answer one question in writing, under time. Mark it in front of the parent the way that board would, show the student how to rebuild the answer, and set one small task for the week. Explain what the next month will cover. Families can switch tutor later at no charge, so marked work and visible improvement are what keep an English student with you.

Joining, leads and pay

Joining is free

Applying, onboarding, building your profile, the ID check and receiving matched requests on the Free plan cost nothing. The Free plan gives you 160 lead credits every month.

Paid plans are optional

Pro, Premium and Featured are optional platform subscriptions: more visibility, AI tools and more lead credits. They are never a fee to apply for a tuition. See tutor plans.

How leads and credits work

A family request that fits your subjects, classes, board, areas and hours reaches your dashboard. Opening the family's contact details uses lead credits, and the credit price is shown on the request before you open it. At most 5 tutors can open one request, and a request stays open for 7 days. Credit packs are there if you need more.

How you get paid

You set your own fee. When a family pays for classes through NXTutors, you receive 50% of the fee for home tuition in the first month and the full fee after that, and 70% of the fee for online tuition every month. Payments are held for 7 days, then paid out weekly. How you get paid.

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.

Questions from tutors

Which boards ask for English tutors in Mumbai?

All of them: the Maharashtra State Board's SSC and HSC, CBSE, ICSE and ISC, Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE, and the IB. ICSE and ISC families often ask specifically for help with prescribed literature, so mention the set texts you have taught.

Can I teach English to Marathi-medium SSC students?

Yes, and some families look for exactly that. The board recognises Marathi- and English-medium schools, and a Marathi-medium child may need English taught step by step. Say on your profile that you take these students and which languages you can explain in.

Does English tuition work online in Mumbai?

Very well for senior literature, essays and IB or IGCSE work, which are mostly reading, writing and discussion. Younger children often do better with a tutor at the table. You can offer both and decide the mix with each family after the demo.

What should an IB English tutor avoid?

Writing any part of an assessed piece. You can discuss texts, coach analysis and give feedback on practice work, but internally assessed and externally submitted work must be the student's own. Read the subject guide on ibo.org before a demo.

How do I choose zones as an English tutor in Mumbai?

Choose zones on your own line within an easy ride, and avoid crossings that need a long auto leg at peak hour. Interchanges such as Dadar, Andheri and Ghatkopar widen your reach. Teach the rest online. A tutor near Borivali, for example, can stay on the Western line between Kandivali, Borivali & Dahisar and Goregaon & Malad, while one in Vashi can serve the Navi Mumbai nodes on the Harbour line.

Do I need a paid plan to get English requests?

No. Joining is free and you start on the Free plan with monthly lead credits. Paid plans are optional. You set your own fee, which the family sees before the free demo class.
