Maths tutor jobs in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai

A maths tutor in Mumbai is rarely teaching one syllabus. Within a single week you might sit with a Class 10 student working through the Maharashtra State Board's Algebra paper, an ICSE student who loses marks for skipped steps, and an IB Diploma student choosing between Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation. That spread is the opportunity: the more of it you can teach with confidence, the more requests you fit.

This page is for tutors deciding whether to take maths work in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai. It sets out which classes and boards ask for maths here, how the rail map decides which homes you can reach, what families tend to look for in a maths tutor, and how to get chosen after the free demo. Lessons can be at a family's home, online, or a mix of both.

Who asks for maths tutors in Mumbai

The Maharashtra State Board sets the SSC at the end of Class 10 and the HSC at the end of Class 12, and its maths is a subject of two halves. In the SSC, maths is written as two separate two-hour papers of 40 marks each, Algebra and Geometry, plus 20 internal marks. A tutor who treats them as one course tends to leave Geometry proofs and constructions to the end; families notice when a tutor plans the two papers in parallel. The board recognises Marathi- and English-medium schools, so say on your profile which medium you can teach in.

CBSE students are spread from the Powai complexes to the Navi Mumbai nodes, and their maths rests on the NCERT books, with case-based and application questions in the paper. ICSE students in Class 10 and ISC students in Class 12 face a wide syllabus and are marked on method as well as answer, so full working is non-negotiable. Above Class 10, many students move to a junior college with a new timetable and larger classes, and maths is one of the two subjects science students most often want help with, alongside physics.

The international end is narrower but steady. IB Diploma students take Maths AA or AI at Standard or Higher Level, and Cambridge IGCSE students sit 0580 at Core or Extended tier, with some adding Additional Mathematics, 0606. Senior science students may also be preparing for JEE Main and Advanced or for the MHT-CET, the state entrance test run by the State CET Cell, whose syllabus and dates you should take only from cetcell.mahacet.org. A maths tutor who can serve the board paper and the entrance paper with one plan is especially useful in Classes 11 and 12.

Where in Mumbai the work is

Think of your reach as a line rather than a radius. A tutor living near Dadar can serve Worli, Dadar & Central Mumbai on foot and reach Bandra, Khar & Santacruz or Chembur, Ghatkopar & Powai in one ride. On the Western line, Andheri & Jogeshwari is the hub where Metro Lines 1, 2A, 3 and 7 meet, so a maths tutor based there can cover Goregaon & Malad or Vile Parle & Juhu without a change. Kandivali, Borivali & Dahisar has its own large pool of families and tutors, helped by Borivali's many train services.

Thane and Navi Mumbai suit tutors who already live there. The Ghodbunder Road townships have no suburban station and Metro Lines 4 and 4A are still being built, so a tutor in Manpada or Kasarvadavali keeps those slots more easily than one coming from Mumbai. In Navi Mumbai, CIDCO's sector grid makes homes easy to find, and a tutor from the same or a neighbouring node, on the Harbour or Trans-Harbour line, is the natural fit. Senior and IB maths can be taught online to any zone.

What families in Mumbai expect

  • Know the board's paper, not just the topic: SSC Algebra and Geometry as separate papers, ICSE method marks, CBSE case-based questions, IB AA or AI at SL or HL.
  • Insist on written working in every lesson, because that is where Mumbai's boards award or withhold marks.
  • Bring past papers and sample papers from the official sites (mahahsscboard.in, cbseacademic.nic.in, cisce.org) rather than a coaching booklet alone.
  • Teach in the student's medium where you can, and say plainly on your profile if you teach SSC maths in English medium only.
  • Keep a monthly plan the parent can see: chapters finished, a weekly test, and a target for preliminary exams in winter.
  • Be ready to move a lesson online on heavy-rain days so the monsoon does not cost a week.
  • Arrive on time week after week; a short, reliable route matters more to parents than a long list of qualifications.

How to get picked

Your profile should name boards and classes together, for example SSC Classes 8 to 10 in English and Marathi medium, ICSE and ISC Classes 9 to 12, or IB AA HL, rather than just maths. Add the stations or zones you can reach and the hours you keep free. Parents compare two or three tutors side by side, with each fee shown before the demo, so a clear profile does a lot of the selling.

In the demo, ask what the student already knows before teaching, then hand them the pen. Pick one problem from their own board's paper, mark it the way the board would, and leave the parent with a plan for the next month. Mention the route you will take each week. Families can switch tutor later at no cost to them, so the tutors who keep students are the ones who turn up, mark carefully and show progress. See how you get paid on the tutor terms page before you set your fee.

Joining, leads and pay

Joining is free

Applying, onboarding, building your profile, the ID check and receiving matched requests on the Free plan cost nothing. The Free plan gives you 160 lead credits every month.

Paid plans are optional

Pro, Premium and Featured are optional platform subscriptions: more visibility, AI tools and more lead credits. They are never a fee to apply for a tuition. See tutor plans.

How leads and credits work

A family request that fits your subjects, classes, board, areas and hours reaches your dashboard. Opening the family's contact details uses lead credits, and the credit price is shown on the request before you open it. At most 5 tutors can open one request, and a request stays open for 7 days. Credit packs are there if you need more.

How you get paid

You set your own fee. When a family pays for classes through NXTutors, you receive 50% of the fee for home tuition in the first month and the full fee after that, and 70% of the fee for online tuition every month. Payments are held for 7 days, then paid out weekly. How you get paid.

Across NXTutors, most home-tuition sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour; Classes 11–12, IB/IGCSE and JEE/NEET sit toward the upper end; specialists for IB HL or JEE Advanced can charge more.

Questions from tutors

Do Mumbai families ask for SSC maths or mostly CBSE and ICSE?

All of them. Mumbai students sit the Maharashtra State Board's SSC and HSC, CBSE, ICSE and ISC, and the IB and Cambridge IGCSE, often in the same building. List every board you can teach and the classes for each, so your profile matches the requests that name them.

How is SSC Class 10 maths different from CBSE maths?

The SSC splits maths into two separate two-hour papers of 40 marks, Algebra and Geometry, with 20 internal marks, and its questions come from the state's own textbooks. CBSE uses the NCERT books and a single paper with case-based questions. Check details on mahahsscboard.in and cbseacademic.nic.in before a demo.

Can I teach IB or IGCSE maths online to students across Mumbai?

Yes. Online requests are matched on subject, board and class, not your address, so an IB AA or AI tutor or a Cambridge 0580 or 0606 tutor can teach a student in Thane or Navi Mumbai from anywhere. Many tutors mix a few home students near their station with online international-board work.

Should a maths tutor in Mumbai also cover MHT-CET or JEE?

Only if you can teach it well. Many Class 11 and 12 science students want one plan that serves the HSC, CBSE or ISC paper and an entrance test. If you offer MHT-CET maths, follow the State CET Cell's own notices on cetcell.mahacet.org for syllabus and dates.

Which zones should a maths tutor pick?

Pick zones on your own line that you can reach in an easy ride, and add a zone across a line only if the change is simple. A tutor in Borivali might list Kandivali, Borivali & Dahisar and Goregaon & Malad; one in Thane might list Thane alone and teach the rest online.

Do I pay anything to get maths requests in Mumbai?

No. Joining is free, and every tutor starts on the Free plan with monthly lead credits. Paid plans are optional subscriptions for visibility and extra credits. You set your own fee, and the family sees it before the free demo.
