Class 9 science has always been a jump, and in 2026-27 it has changed as well. CBSE schools now teach from NCERT's new Class 9 textbook, Exploration, first published in April 2026, which reorganises the year into thirteen chapters, brings reproduction forward from Class 10 and adds a chapter on the Earth as a system. ICSE students, as before, study Physics, Chemistry and Biology as three separate subjects with three separate papers. This guide sets out both syllabuses with CBSE's unit weightage, the practicals, the diagrams and numericals that decide marks, a weekly plan, and how to choose a Class 9 science home tutor.
Middle-school science asks children to observe and explain. Class 9 asks them to do that and also to calculate, define exactly and draw to a standard. In the same fortnight a student may meet equations of motion, Bohr's model of the atom and the organelles of a cell. Three changes stand out:
Class 9 is also the first half of the secondary stage. Habits formed now, good or bad, carry straight into the Class 10 board year.
For 2026-27, CBSE prescribes NCERT's Class 9 science textbook, now Exploration: Textbook of Science for Grade 9. It replaces the book Class 9 students used for many years, and it follows on from the Curiosity books of Classes 6 to 8. Its thirteen chapters:
| Ch. | Chapter | Main ideas (from CBSE's 2026-27 curriculum) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Exploration: Entering the World of Secondary Science | Scientific language, careful observation, designing simple experiments |
| 2 | Cell: The Building Block of Life | Plant and animal cells, prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, organelles, cell membrane permeability, osmosis, mitosis and meiosis |
| 3 | Tissues in Action | Plant tissues (meristematic, permanent, simple and complex, xylem and phloem), animal tissues, muscle types, joints |
| 4 | Describing Motion Around Us | Distance and displacement, speed, velocity, acceleration, motion graphs, uniform circular motion |
| 5 | Exploring Mixtures and their Separation | Homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures, solutions, suspensions and colloids, concentration, solubility graphs, separation techniques |
| 6 | How Forces Affect Motion | Balanced and unbalanced forces, friction, Newton's three laws of motion |
| 7 | Work, Energy, and Simple Machines | Work, kinetic and potential energy, conservation of energy, power, mechanical advantage of levers, pulleys and inclined planes |
| 8 | Journey Inside the Atom | Atomic models including Bohr's model, electron distribution, valency, atomic number and mass, isotopes and isobars |
| 9 | Atomic Foundations of Matter | Laws of chemical combination, atoms and molecules, ions, writing formulae, molecular and formula unit mass |
| 10 | Sound Waves: Characteristics and Applications | Production and propagation of sound, wavelength, frequency, amplitude, echoes and applications |
| 11 | Reproduction: How Life Continues | Asexual and sexual reproduction, flowers, pollination and fertilisation |
| 12 | Patterns in Life: Diversity and Classification | Five kingdoms and their key features, major divisions of animals, binomial nomenclature |
| 13 | Earth as a System: Energy, Matter, and Life | Earth's spheres, solar radiation and differential heating, winds and breezes, biogeochemical cycles |
Compared with the older book, the main changes a parent will notice are a standalone chapter on mixtures, simple machines added to work and energy, reproduction moved into Class 9, and earth science appearing for the first time as a Class 9 chapter. Tutors who have taught Class 9 for years from old notes need to have caught up with these.
CBSE's Class 9 Science (code 086) curriculum for 2026-27 groups the chapters into four units for the 80-mark, three-hour annual examination:
| Unit | Chapters | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| I. World of Living | 2 Cell, 3 Tissues, 11 Reproduction, 12 Diversity and Classification | 27 |
| II. Matter: Its Nature and Behaviour | 5 Mixtures, 8 Inside the Atom, 9 Atomic Foundations of Matter | 25 |
| III. Motion, Force, Work and Sound | 4 Motion, 6 Forces, 7 Work and Energy, 10 Sound | 23 |
| IV. Earth as a System | 13 Earth as a System | 5 |
| Theory total | 80 | |
| Internal assessment | Set by the school | 20 |
Two points for planning. Biology now carries the largest single share, 27 marks, largely because reproduction has joined cells, tissues and classification; students who treat biology as "just reading" often lose marks on diagrams and precise terms. And although physics carries 23 marks, it is the unit that most often pulls the total down, because every chapter has numericals and graphs. A tutor should balance time by difficulty as well as marks. The introductory Chapter 1 does not appear in the unit table.
CBSE's question paper design for Class 9 Science in 2026-27 divides the 80 theory marks by the kind of thinking each question tests:
| Competency | Share of theory marks |
|---|---|
| Demonstrate knowledge and understanding | 50% |
| Application of knowledge and concepts | 30% |
| Formulate, analyse, evaluate and create | 20% |
Question types include very short answers and objective items, assertion-reasoning, short and long answers, and source-based, case-based or passage-based questions, with internal choice in about a third of the paper. Half the paper, in other words, goes beyond recall. Students who only reread the chapter are usually comfortable with the first 50% and uneasy with the rest.
The 20 internal marks are split into four parts of five marks each: periodic assessment, multiple assessment, portfolio, and subject enrichment (practical work). These are the easiest marks of the year to secure, provided practical records and the portfolio are kept up as the year goes, not in a rush in February.
CBSE has also published optional "Science at Advanced Level" material for Grade 9, covering topics such as measurement, Newton's laws, advanced simple machines, chemical bonding, microscopy and biotechnology. It is optional enrichment; ask your child's school whether and how it uses it.
The 2026-27 curriculum lists thirteen practicals to be done alongside the theory. Grouped by strand:
Almost every practical ends with a labelled diagram or a graph. A tutor who asks for the diagram from memory a week after the lab session is doing exactly what the exam will do.
In ICSE schools, science in Class 9 is three subjects. CISCE's syllabus for students who will sit the ICSE examination in 2028 (that is, in Class 9 in 2026-27) sets, for each of Physics, Chemistry and Biology, one written paper of two hours for 80 marks plus 20 marks of internal assessment of practical work. The Class 9 topics are:
Measurements and Experimentation (including Vernier callipers, screw gauge and the simple pendulum); Motion in One Dimension; Laws of Motion; Fluids; Heat and Energy; Light; Sound; Electricity and Magnetism.
The Language of Chemistry; Chemical Changes and Reactions; Water; Atomic Structure and Chemical Bonding; The Periodic Table; Study of the First Element, Hydrogen; Study of Gas Laws; Atmospheric and Environmental Chemistry.
Basic Biology (cell and tissues); Flowering Plants; Plant Physiology (seeds, germination, respiration); Diversity in the Animal Kingdom; Economic Importance of Bacteria and Fungi; Human Anatomy and Physiology; Health and Hygiene.
ICSE Class 9 is broader and more numerical than CBSE in places: Vernier and screw-gauge readings, gas-law calculations and fluid pressure all appear this year. The most effective ICSE tutors keep three separate notebooks and revision cycles, so no one science is left behind. If one subject needs a specialist, a separate physics or chemistry tutor for that subject alone can work alongside a general science tutor.
Most Class 9 practicals need a school laboratory, but several ideas can be explored safely at home with an adult present:
| Chapter | Activity | Safety note |
|---|---|---|
| Mixtures | Stir salt, chalk powder and a little milk into three glasses of water; shine a torch through each in a dark room to see which scatters light (the Tyndall effect) | Kitchen materials only |
| Mixtures | Put a dot of black water-based sketch pen near the bottom of a strip of coffee filter paper and stand it in a little water to separate the colours | None |
| Motion | Walk a measured distance, recording time at every 5 metres with a phone; plot a distance-time graph and find the speed from the slope | Use a safe, traffic-free space |
| Work and Energy | Balance a ruler on a pencil, place coins as load and effort at different distances, and calculate mechanical advantage | None |
| Sound | Stretch a slinky along the floor, send a pulse and time how long it takes to travel a measured length | None |
| Reproduction | Cut a hibiscus or other large flower lengthwise and identify sepals, petals, stamens and pistil; draw and label it | Use a butter knife; avoid unknown or toxic plants |
| Reproduction | Leave a piece of bread slightly damp in a sealed clear bag and watch mould appear over a few days | Keep the bag sealed; do not smell it; bin it unopened |
Plant and animal cells, tissues seen under the microscope, a bisexual flower, budding and spore formation. Labels ruled, spelt correctly and placed on one side.
Distance-time and velocity-time graphs: reading slope as speed or acceleration and area as distance. This is the single biggest numerical skill of the year.
F = ma, work, kinetic and potential energy, power and mechanical advantage. Formula, substitution with units, answer with unit, every time.
Electron distribution, valency, formulae from ions and molecular mass. Small errors with charges or subscripts are the usual mark losses.
Mass by mass, mass by volume and volume by volume percentages. Straightforward, but only if the student is clear which quantity is the solution and which the solute.
Reading a short passage or data set and answering in the terms it uses. Practising two of these a week is enough to make them routine.
The Class 10 board paper assumes Class 9 is secure. Atomic structure and valency underpin chemical equations, acids and bases and carbon compounds; cells and tissues underpin life processes; motion, force and energy underpin the numerical side of Class 10 physics. Graph work and unit handling from Class 9 are used in every numerical that follows.
Because NCERT has rewritten the Class 9 book for 2026-27 and moved reproduction into it, check in April which Class 10 book and syllabus your child's school will use for 2027-28. Our Class 10 science tutor guide covers board preparation, and families still weighing streams for Class 11 may find how to choose a board and stream useful. If Class 8 concepts are shaky, the Class 8 science guide shows what to revisit first, and because so much of Class 9 physics is algebra and graphs, our Class 9 maths tutor guide is worth reading alongside.
Most Class 9 students do well with two sessions a week, rising to three in the weeks before half-yearly and annual exams. A typical week:
ICSE students need the same rhythm for each of the three sciences, which is why many ICSE families choose three sessions a week from the start.
More advice on judging a tutor is in our main science home tutor guide.
Home tuition suits students who need close supervision of diagrams and numericals or who find screens distracting. Online tuition gives access to a wider range of experienced Class 9 tutors, including subject specialists for ICSE, and saves travel time; it works when the tutor can see the notebook through a tablet or camera. A hybrid of one home and one online session a week is common.
Across NXTutors, most sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour. For Class 9 science the fee depends on the tutor's experience, whether one tutor covers all three sciences, home or online, travel and the number of sessions each week. You see each shortlisted tutor's fee before the demo, and our pricing guide explains the factors.
Tell us the board (CBSE or ICSE), which sciences need help, the school, your area, timings, mode and budget. We shortlist two or three tutors, you choose one for a free demo class, and switching later in the year is free.
