Class 7 science is where the subject starts to split into recognisable chemistry, physics and biology, even though CBSE students still learn it from one book. Acids and bases, electric circuits, metals and non-metals, heat transfer, speed, photosynthesis and eclipses all arrive in the same year. The ideas are not hard one by one, but there are many of them, and each chapter asks children to explain what they observe. This guide takes you through NCERT's Class 7 Curiosity book for 2026-27, the experiments that work safely at home, the diagrams and skills that start to carry marks, and what to look for in a Class 7 science tutor.
In Class 6, most chapters describe things a child can see and touch: leaves, magnets, water evaporating. Class 7 moves one step behind what is visible. Why does turmeric turn red in soapy water? Why does a wire need to make a complete loop for a bulb to glow? Why does a steel spoon in hot tea get hot at the handle? The answers involve invisible things, such as the nature of a substance, current in a circuit or the movement of heat, and children have to reason about them.
Class 7 also brings the first real formula, speed as distance divided by time, and the first circuit symbols. And it includes Adolescence: A Stage of Growth and Change, a chapter many children find awkward to discuss. A calm, matter-of-fact teacher makes a real difference there.
NCERT's Curiosity (Textbook of Science for Grade 7) was first published in April 2025 and is reprinted for 2026-27 with twelve chapters. As in Class 6, the opening chapter is an introduction that NCERT describes as non-evaluative. Schools set their own order and tests; there is no board weightage in Class 7.
| Ch. | Chapter | Main ideas | Strand |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Ever-Evolving World of Science | Science as a way of asking and testing; links between the chapters | Introduction |
| 2 | Exploring Substances: Acidic, Basic, and Neutral | Litmus and turmeric as indicators, neutralisation in daily life | Chemistry |
| 3 | Electricity: Circuits and their Components | Cells, batteries, lamps, switches, circuit diagrams, conductors and insulators | Physics |
| 4 | The World of Metals and Non-metals | Malleability, ductility, sonority, conduction; effect of air and water on iron and other metals | Chemistry |
| 5 | Changes Around Us: Physical and Chemical | Changes in appearance versus new substances, rusting, combustion, slow natural changes such as weathering | Chemistry |
| 6 | Adolescence: A Stage of Growth and Change | Physical, emotional and behavioural changes, nutrition, hygiene, activity, avoiding harmful substances | Biology |
| 7 | Heat Transfer in Nature | Conduction, convection, radiation, land and sea breezes, the water cycle and seepage | Physics |
| 8 | Measurement of Time and Motion | Measuring time, the SI unit of time, speed, uniform and non-uniform linear motion | Physics |
| 9 | Life Processes in Animals | Nutrition and digestion in humans and other animals, respiration and breathing | Biology |
| 10 | Life Processes in Plants | Leaves as food factories, photosynthesis, transport of water, minerals and food | Biology |
| 11 | Light: Shadows and Reflections | Transparent, translucent and opaque materials, shadows, reflection, plane-mirror images, pinhole camera, periscope and kaleidoscope | Physics |
| 12 | Earth, Moon, and the Sun | Rotation and revolution, the changing night sky, solar and lunar eclipses | Earth and space |
Count the strands and you see why Class 7 feels busy: four physics chapters, three chemistry chapters and three biology chapters, plus earth and space. A tutor's first job is to show how they connect, so the year feels like one subject rather than eleven unrelated topics.
Children often know that a bulb needs a cell but cannot say why a circuit must be closed, or draw the symbols correctly. Drawing each real circuit as a diagram, and each diagram as a real circuit, fixes this.
The colour changes of litmus and turmeric are easy to mix up. A simple two-column table (acid, base) for each indicator, made after doing the test, sticks far better than a list read from the book.
Deciding whether a change is physical or chemical needs a reason, not a guess: is a new substance formed, and can the change be easily reversed? Rusting and combustion are the standard test cases.
The first formula of the year. Students confuse speed, distance and time, forget units such as m/s and km/h, and struggle to tell uniform from non-uniform motion from a table of readings.
Conduction, convection and radiation are easy to define and hard to apply. Land and sea breezes need a diagram with arrows and a clear statement of which surface heats faster.
Photosynthesis needs its raw materials, conditions and products stated exactly. Transport of water and food is where students confuse the two vessels, so a labelled diagram helps.
ICSE schools do not use a single CISCE-prescribed Class 7 textbook. Most teach physics, chemistry and biology as separate strands, often from separate books, and the topics broadly overlap with the NCERT list above: physical and chemical changes, elements and compounds, heat and light, electricity and magnetism, nutrition, respiration and the plant and animal kingdoms. ICSE books tend to introduce more terms and definitions a little earlier, and the chemistry strand often starts on symbols and simple formulae in these middle years.
Because the list varies by school, share the school's book list and test schedule when you ask for a tutor. For ICSE families, a tutor who keeps three notebooks in step, one per science, is worth a great deal.
The Class 7 book is full of activities, and several work well at home with an adult present. Keep everything low voltage and low heat.
| Chapter | Activity | Safety note |
|---|---|---|
| Acidic, Basic, and Neutral | Rub turmeric paste on a strip of paper and test drops of lemon juice, soap solution, baking-soda solution and tap water; record the colour for each | Use only kitchen substances; no bathroom or floor cleaners |
| Electricity | Build a circuit with a torch cell, a small bulb or LED and two wires; add a paper-clip switch; test coins, pencil lead, plastic and rubber as conductors or insulators | Only 1.5 V cells, never the mains socket; disconnect when done |
| Metals and Non-metals | Tap a steel spoon, a wooden spoon and a plastic spoon to compare sonority; leave a steel and a wooden spoon in warm water and feel the handles | Warm water, not boiling |
| Physical and Chemical Changes | Set up iron nails in three jars: dry, in tap water, and in water under a layer of oil; check for rust over a week | Dispose of rusty nails carefully |
| Heat Transfer | Drop a little food colouring into a glass of warm water and a glass of cold water and watch convection currents | Warm tap water is enough |
| Time and Motion | Make a pendulum from string and a small weight; time 20 swings with a phone and find one swing's time; repeat with a shorter string | Clear space around the swing |
| Life Processes in Plants | Stand a white flower or a celery stalk in coloured water overnight and look for colour in the petals or veins | None |
| Light | Make a pinhole camera from a box and butter paper and view a lit window; write your name and read it in a mirror | Never point the pinhole camera at the Sun |
| Earth, Moon, and the Sun | In a dark room, use a torch as the Sun, a ball as the Earth and a smaller ball as the Moon to show solar and lunar eclipses | Never look directly at the Sun, even during an eclipse |
Some school activities, such as testing a leaf for starch, involve boiling leaves in alcohol. Those belong in the school laboratory, not the kitchen. A tutor can talk the child through the steps and the reasons instead.
The Class 8 Curiosity book builds straight on this year:
Our Class 8 science tutor guide covers that year, and if your child is just starting middle-school science, the Class 6 science guide explains the Class 6 foundations. Speed calculations lean on ratio and unit skills from maths, so our Class 7 maths tutor guide may help too.
Two tutor sessions a week of about an hour suit most Class 7 students. A steady week could run like this:
Before half-yearly and annual exams, the tutor should switch to mixed practice across chapters and a couple of timed papers set in the school's format.
The main science home tutor guide has a longer checklist that works for every class.
Home tuition suits Class 7 well because so many chapters are hands-on: the tutor can build a circuit or set up the rusting jars with your child. Online tuition works when materials are ready before the session and the tutor can see the notebook through a camera; it also gives you a wider choice of tutors. Many families mix the two.
Across NXTutors, most sessions fall between ₹800 and ₹2,500 an hour, depending on the tutor's experience, home or online, travel and the number of sessions each week. You see each shortlisted tutor's fee before the demo; our pricing guide has more detail.
Share the board, school, area, timings, mode and budget. We shortlist two or three tutors, you choose one for a free demo class, and switching later is free. In Gurugram, see our Gurgaon science tutor page; anywhere else, book a free demo to begin.
