How does a science tutor's job change from Class 6 to Class 10?

• Classes 6 and 7: words and sketches. NCERT's Curiosity books, or your school's own text, are built around activities. The tutor turns each activity into one clear sentence with the right scientific word and a labelled sketch. Listen for "evaporates" rather than "dries up".
• Class 8: three strands appear. Physics, chemistry and biology start to separate, numericals arrive and word equations need learning. A unit after every number is the habit to build now.
• Class 9: the steep year. Motion graphs, the nature of matter and the cell arrive together. Gaps here should be closed within the month, not saved for Class 10.
• Class 10: the board year. Every chapter is now aimed at the paper and its marking scheme, with timed sections written under exam conditions.

Until Class 10 one tutor for all three sciences is usually the sensible choice, because one person can tell whether a failing physics numerical is a maths problem or a physics one. Science for the Andhra Pradesh SSC examination

The Board of Secondary Education, Andhra Pradesh conducts the SSC public examinations at the end of Class 10 and publishes model question papers, blueprints and weightage tables on bse.ap.gov.in. It sets and revises its own syllabus and scheme, so we do not describe the SSC science paper here; the board's site is the reference.

When we match a tutor for an SSC student, three points carry most weight. The tutor should teach in the medium your child writes answers in, Telugu or English, and help with the switch if the school has moved to English medium. Practice should come from the issued textbook and the board's own model papers and blueprints. CBSE Class 10 science: which units carry the 80 board marks?

The written board paper is out of 80. The other 20 are school marks, 5 each for periodic tests, multiple assessment, the portfolio and practical-based subject enrichment. Across the board paper, biology accounts for 30 marks and chemistry and physics for 25 each.

How are the 39 questions in the Class 10 paper built?

CBSE posts sample papers and marking schemes on cbseacademic ahead of the exam, and they remain the most reliable practice material.

Topics the school marks, practicals, and the two exam sittings

For 2026-27, three areas stay out of the board paper and are assessed by the school instead: the electric motor, electromagnetic induction and the generator; evolution; and the arrangement of elements in the periodic table. Internal marks still depend on them and Class 11 builds on them, so they deserve real teaching, only not board-revision weeks. The curriculum also names 14 experiments, and board questions draw on them, so the practical notebook belongs in revision.

Every Class 10 student writes the compulsory main exam. Eligible students may then sit an optional second exam to improve as many as three subjects, science among them. The 2027 dates have not been announced, so keep an eye on cbse.gov.in and prepare as though the first sitting were the only one. The board-year planner maps the months.

Class 9 science now follows a new book

CBSE's 2026-27 curriculum uses NCERT's new Class 9 textbook, Exploration. The yearly exam keeps the 80 + 20 shape, spread over four units: Matter, its nature and behaviour, 27; World of living, 25; Motion, force, work and sound, 23; and Earth as a system, 5. Notes handed down from an older brother or sister follow the old book, so ask the tutor to plan from the current chapters. More on the Class 9 science tutor page.

What changes when the course is ICSE?

At ICSE Class 10, science is three separate papers, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, each set by CISCE with its own internal assessment. Schools pick their textbooks within the CISCE syllabus, so the tutor must teach from your child's books and CISCE specimen papers rather than an NCERT plan. ICSE examiners reward exact definitions and numericals worked through to the unit. Many families need help in only one of the three, usually from Class 9. ICSE science specialists are fewer in Vizag than CBSE teachers, so ask early; online lessons widen the choice.

What should one science session at home contain?

A session that works for most children in these years has four parts, whatever its length:

1. A quick oral check on last week's chapter, three or four questions without the book.
2. The new idea taught from the school textbook, with the child explaining it back in their own words.
3. One diagram or equation drawn or balanced from memory: a ray diagram, a circuit with the ammeter in series and the voltmeter in parallel, a labelled heart or nephron, a heredity cross shown in full.
4. A written answer to a board-style question, marked before the tutor leaves.
